Hakkar, the Soulflayer
Play this, kill it, then play Hemet, Jungle Hunter. Now the opponent will die at some point. Yeah, that’s the terrible combo I came up with. Oh, and this gets totally countered by Geist, a card that most Control decks run. Yeah, looks bad, if it became a win condition of sorts, the opponent can also save a silence or transform effect to hit this before it gets rolling (costs 10 mana, so can’t kill it the same turn you play it, except with Innervate + Naturalize in Druid).
Gral, the Shark
Big Deathrattle Rogue is a thing in Wild, and I toyed with it in Standard. The deck runs Dollmaster Dorian, the Kobold that creates 1/1s from your hand, and Umbra. I think this would fit right in. In general, though, this is super, super weak to silence and transform effects. Not only you use your (hopefully) huge minion, you also lose the minion you ate.
Shriek
All I ever wanted since I unpacked the Warlock Quest was to have Odd Warlock Quest viable. The upgraded Hero Power ties in very nicely with what the Quest wants to do: you get extra cards that you can discard, the upgraded Hero Power preserves your life, and then you smack the reward to win the game. It would obviously be a Control Warlock-esque deck, since the Quest Reward is aimed to win in the long game, and not losing life every time you tap is great. The main problem is that all the AOE Warlock has is even-costed (Defile, Hellfire, Twisting Nether) except for Lord Godfrey. One single AOE-card does not cut it, especially if it’s 7-mana costed and there’s aggro around. I was hoping for a card like: 3-mana discard your highest cost minion, deal it’s attack damage to all minions, which would perfectly work for Baku. Instead we get this which is… not as good, but at least some needed AOE for that deck. an early 2-damage to all definitely helps, but in the mid-game we will still probably need more… Also, 2-damage is usually not enough in the current meta, we have Dire Moles, Wolves… 2-health minions are also kept away due to Odd Rogue’s weapon. I will definitely try Odd Quest Warlock with the tools we are getting (this plus the 3 mana 2/6 Taunt Troll is nice), but I’d be surprised if I can make it work…
Grave Horror
It would also need to be Epic and have the word “Giant” in its name. Literally unplayable. 🙂
Overkill Keyword Guide - New Mechanic From Rastakhan's Rumble
We’ve already had “Overkill” effects before, and they were normally underwhelming. Baited Arrow is powercreep on Bane of Doom, for example. WANTED! is another example, and it’s a bad card. Hopefully they get it right this time. The Warrior weapon looks powerful if Aggro/Tempo Warrior becomes a thing, and in Arena it looks very strong.
Surrender to Madness
Great meme potential, but too unreliable on tempo/midrange decks. The only REAL use for this card is cementing Archbishop Benedictus as a win condition in Fatigue Priest. You play it at 10 mana after the Benedictus, and you will draw really powerful minions after that. Fatigue Priest loses hard to the popular combo decks right now, so this won’t see any play in the near future. 0.5/5 stars.
Hir'eek, the Bat
This looks like a finisher. In a Control-esque Warlock, you run 2x Soul Infusion and you hit this guy twice. Then you pay 8 mana to fill your board with 5/5s, a-la-Dragoncaller Alanna. Don’t underrate it, but it can actually be good. Problem is if you draw it really late and you still have other minions you have to play to make it the left-most-minion. 2.5/5 stars potential, 1.5/5 stars probably.
Spirit of the Bat
Difficult to get value of this right now. Maybe play this and then Fiendish Circle + Joy-e-bot + Defile for at least a 3-mana board clear and lots of +1/+1 in your hand. Even then I highly doubt it’s worth it. It synergizes well with the new Warlock Legendary, but that’s it. Maybe we get something interesting that will synergize with this? 1/5 stars.
Sul'thraze
Forgot to say: this is a totally diferent beast in Arena. In Arena, midrange decks are the norm, so this will be a premium card in Arena (Serves as both removal and face damage). 4/5 stars in Arena, 1.5/5 stars in Constructed.
Sul'thraze
I know we all underrated Supercollider, but I do think this is a weak weapon. The only Warrior that could possibly run this is an Even Warrior (which can’t run Supercollider), or an Aggro/Midrange Warrior, which hasn’t been a viable deck since Fiery War Axe nerf. So I have to rate this 1.5/5 stars.
Spirit of the Shark
This has the potential to be broken, if and only if there’s some Battlecries and Combos that get out of hand when doubled. Faldorei Strider for example is good, and you can make a yuuuuuuuge Edwin Van Cleef. It’s even better in the late game, when you can get value of it two turns instead of one (I assume this will be a high priority target once Stealth is gone). Even if the card ends up being subpar, it still looks like a very fun card. 3.5/5 stars, although we’ll see what toys Rogue gets to exploit this.
Hir'eek, the Bat
I had to look up Demonologist again because I hadn’t seen it not even once on Ladder (Rank 5 and up), so I had forgotten if it was a dude or chick. And yeah, I meant nerf, not buff.
Shirvallah, the Tiger
I’m not that sold on Hemet. The Tiger needs to get down to at least 3 mana before this combo is playable, and having to use 22 mana on spells is a lot of mana! I think by the time the combo is available, Hemet could be redundant. But it needs experimentation for sure…
Hir'eek, the Bat
Haha, no Demon so that the 2/2 dude that gives your demons +1/+1 doesn’t get out of hand. Also a buff to the 8-mana slot of creatures for Spiteful Decks. They’ll be summoning a 1/1 now apart from Tirions and Lich Kings.
Shirvallah, the Tiger
I would like this interaction to be clarified. When Holy Wrath drew Molten Giant, it did the full mana cost damage if I remember correctly. So why wouldn’t it in this case? This Tiger could be the win condition that Control Paladin is lacking: you play this for 0-mana once you have drawn your deck, then Baleful Banker it, then Holy Wrath for 25 damage, which would normally be lethal.
Sharkfin Fan
Well this card will make me try Even Rogue again. Bloodsail Corsair was already an outstanding 2-drop in that deck (3/3 for 2 mana), but if you didn’t hit it in turn 2, your chances of winning decreased drastically. This guy increases the consistency (2 mana 2/2 + 1/1 is also very good), although it dies to Odd Rogue’s weapon. This will probably be a 1.5/5 stars, but I’m giving it 3.5/5 stars for making me try Even Rogue.
The Light Has Betrayed Me: What Does Priest Need to Get Back to the Top?
Raza should read: Battlecry: “If your deck doesn’t have duplicates, your CURRENT Hero Power costs (0) this game”. This means Raza would need to be played AFTER Anduin to start combo running, so no sooner than Turn 9. This would give Aggro and Midrange plenty of time to try to kill the Priest before they get their combo running, and if the Priest is desperate and needs to play Raza before Anduin, then there is no discount for the gun machine. It would still have left the deck viable, but not oppressive!
Digging into Boomsday Arena (12.0) – Strategies, Tips & Tricks for Power Level Picks
Yes, we all know the words of a random player in a random article of a random site inspired the devs. =P In all honesty, though, Giggles would be fair at 6 mana. The problem is that it would then be a powerhouse for Even decks. So they have to underpower it to 7 mana. Maybe the main body could have been a 3/2 at 7 mana. As it is now, it’s only useful in Evolve Shaman and maybe Odd Warrior. And yes, glad that the OP Giggles is gone from Arena.
Upcoming Boomsday Meta Nerfs: Giggling Inventor, Mana Wyrm, and Aviana
Nerfs are here! Meta will shake up and that is always great news!
Giggles: Finally! Those who say this card was fine at 5 mana are out of their mind. It was like Patches or Corridor Creeper, totally warping the meta around it and forcing others to play their own copies and/or counters. I’m also glad they tested it at 6 mana and determined it would have been too strong in Genn decks, so 7 mana seems reasonable (and they could have bumped the main body stats a bit to compensate, something like a 3/2). The card can still be played in Odd Warrior and Midrange Evolve Shaman so it’s not going to disappear. Which goes to show the power level of the card at 5-mana: normally a nerf of 1-mana is already very harsh, but here it gets nerfed with 2 mana and it’s still playable in some archetypes! Wow! Also, playing Arena with Giggles around was very, VERY painful. Very happy about this.
Mana Wyrm: it was the best 1-drop in the game and carried games. I totally understand the nerf, BUT, I don’t like how they nerfed it. Now it’s a worse Mana Addict, and that’s saying something. It could have been changed to a 1 mana 1/2 (Undertaker style) or a 2 mana 1/4, and it would have been a fine card. But like it is, it’s basically unplayable. Tempo Mage was also not THAT powerful in Standard right now, but whenever it is (e.g. Wild) Mana Wyrm is definitely one of the most powerful cards in that deck. I will miss this card’s power, but understand it had to be nerfed. I’m also happy to have hold onto all those extra copies I opened in packs!
Aviana: also good nerf, Aviana + Kun was quite oppressive in Wild. Now the combo is still possible, but you need Innervate/Coin or an Emperor Thaurissan discount, which makes it fair. Also balances Juicy Psychmelon.
Missing: nerfs to Branching Paths and/or Ultimate Infestation. Branching Paths could have had a gain 5 armor instead of 6, or HEAL 6 life instead of gain 6 armor. UI could have had its numbers changed to 4. Token Druid and Spiteful Druid got considerably nerfed with GI nerf, and Maly and Togwaggle can’t run GI anymore, but Spreading Plague is going to go more unchecked now that Mossy will be less incentivizing to run. Some of those Druid cards hitting the nerf would have been fair, besides the whole playerbase is quite tired of having to face the same Druid shell aaaaaall the time. Hopefully the GI nerf will push some aggro decks to the forefront to punish Druids. Also, I hope that was the end of Quest Rogue!
This looks broken, but we’ll have to see if it’s a dead card more often than not. Just thinking on dropping Scavenging Hyena + UTH + then this makes my mouth water, and that’s not the best combo out there.
