Vectus
It’s an almost-borderline playable token card just on its own, which means you don’t need to highroll massive Deathrattles to start considering him, just have a consistent few that would be cool to repeat. We’re due for more Deathrattle synergies and he’s super strong support for the archetype!
Star Student Stelina
Everyone hates a know-it-all.
Control DH can play it against other control decks, it might even be useful against Aggro because you can force them into topdeck mode quicker. Harder to Outcast as a Control deck though.
I don’t think you play it in Tempo Hunter, 4 mana 4/3 isn’t good tempo even if it might let you dodge an AoE. Could be wrong.
Magehunter
Illidan isn’t running Consume Magic right now so I’m not so sure he would run this. It’s nice to silence a taunt, but this’ll probably just die in the counterattack. It’s quite good against Primes but is that important enough to run this? I’m skeptical.
Sphere of Sapience
It’s fun! A card for control decks that won’t play a one-drop otherwise, or maaaaybe decks like Spell Mage or Phaoris Paladin that want to maximize drawing very specific payoff cards.
Not always an auto-include if your deck runs other weapons or if your draw isn’t the best. Also an Ooze target if the meta is still calling for it (it is right now).
Lorekeeper Polkelt
I don’t actually think this card is that good? It’s like a more extreme version of Sightless Watcher.
If you’re against Aggro this is a very dead card- a Yeti that HURTS your draws since you want to draw cheap answers, not your greedy top-end. Look at the decks that exist now – I can think of no existing deck where playing this would make you NOT lose on the spot versus Demon Hunter or Dragon Hunter.
If you ARE aggro there’s something to be said about making your topdecks better – you’d rather get your expensive bursty finishers than your 1-drops. But you have to play a Yeti to do that and Aggro wouldn’t be too happy about that. They’d rather just play high-tempo cards and hope they draw into the right stuff.
Combo doesn’t need this either, this too will make them lose against aggro, and cheap cards are part of most combos so this will bury them.
In next 1.5 years there might be some niche effect where you want to ensure you do (or do not) draw into cast-when-drawn cards shuffled into your deck, or a situation like Quest Warlock where you can guarantee a 0-mana Malygos. But those still need to justify playing … a Yeti.
Glide
A very interestingly designed card, sometimes you specifically won’t want to get the Outcast effect. Illidan has a lot of other good draw spells that might make this one obsolete, though… the types of DH decks that would most want to run this are probably ones with bigger minions that need to sometimes ‘fix’ their hand if they have an awkward Outcast sandwich going on.
Totem Goliath
Totem Shaman dies if he loses the board. Now he doesn’t. And those totems are ripe to be evolved or Vessina’d or Bloodlusted, depending on when this dies and where you are overload-wise. A+
Cabal Acolyte
It’s solid, maybe even powerful if you yoink a Bone Wraith… or your opponent’s copy of this. I’m glad the only Primes it can steal are Hunter’s and Paladin’s (and then you can kinda play around it by spamming other small guys).
Mozaki, Master Duelist
It’s kinda in an awkward spot- there’s two decks that would like to run this:
– An OTK combo mage, but it doesn’t easily hit 30 damage unless they print more 0 cost spells or you rely on Incanter’s Flow (best I can get is 2 secrets from Ancient Mysteries + 2 coins from Licensed Adventurer + 2x Arcane Missiles + 2x Frostbolt for ~34 damage depending on enemy minions + good luck keeping those 9 cards in your hand without dying)
– A tempo/aggro/spellspam Mage, which I would love to see return but doesn’t have enough draw at the moment. Last time spellspam Mage was viable, we had Aluneth.
That said, the stats are good enough where you might happily drop it on curve and hope it survives, or save it for the lategame and rely on its soft taunt + snowball potential to clinch the match. And Spell Mage will reeeally enjoy getting this from Font of Power.
Ceremonial Maul
Could be playable, probably much moreso for Paladin than Warrior (but we have plenty of new spells left to see for both).
Don’t worry about using this on curve, wait and drop it alongside Libram of Hope. If you wind up having to use it with Consecration, Call to Adventure, or a random Lightforged Crusader spell that ain’t bad either.
Warrior probably has better things to do, but they ARE opening up space for Big Warrior of all things (Control spells, Rattlegore/Troublemaker, Boom Reaver + Dimensional Ripper)
Ace Hunter Kreen
It’s Deathspeaker on steroids. Deathspeaker was an OG arena card and saw some experimentation in Constructed. If the meta has a lot of minion combat he could be a lynchpin card.
Disciplinarian Gandling
Oh dang, good in Zoolock, you can treat it kinda like a second Tekahn.
Priest is more eh, it’s support for Zoo priest and I dunno how viable that is. Priest has a lot of small Deathrattles and Lackeys it can decide to work with but I’m not sure this card is enough to make that sort of strategy viable on its own.
Cycle of Hatred
Smells like a control card, but note you can also kill your own 1/1s to “buff” them.
Tough to guess whether it’ll be playable or not, trying to sniff out which expensive cards will work in a non-tempo DH build is anyone’s guess.
Brittlebone Destroyer
Crazy Strong, not hard to activate at all for either class. Control Priest and Controllock are starting to look pretty scary ????
Boneweb Egg
Seems kinda weak compared to Nerubian Egg and Scarab Egg. The discard effect is cool and all but will need serious Discard/Deathrattle support to be playable.
Steeldancer
Seems like decent tempo that’s not TOO hard to activate. Warrior has a lot of competition for his card slots, and with Corsair Cache not providing an attack boost anymore there’s not an ideal weapon to use with this, but he is due for some new weapons this expansion so we’ll see.
Rogue is looking like the more promising class, it curves with Cutlass and even might bring Waggle Pick back. Deadly Poison is a thing, too. Ah yes and both this minion and the summoned card play nice if you have Bamboozle up.
Infiltrator Lilian
It deals a lot of damage when it trades in, I also see it being easy to maneuver so that you trade this into your opponent’s only minion and guarantee face damage. Works with Rogue’s stealth cards too. Seems ok, but just ok.
We haven’t seen much Deathrattle support this year (It’s the year of the Phoenix, that should be all about death and rebirth) – new Deathrattle support cards could make this good too.
Combustion
I can dig it, this would answer the 2-health Demon Hunter boards that totally mow me down as mage otherwise :p
Worst case it’s a Shadowbolt, best case it flexibly deals 7 damage to enemy minions for just 3 mana. Not the best but not the worst. Meta dependent whether you’d actually put this in your deck, but an ok tool for Mage to have, especially next year when Flame Ward rotates.
Headmaster Kel'Thuzad
A card just for control decks that is potentially gamewinning with the right activator/situation, and you can even decide to use him “on curve” with a cheap Spell or save him with a boardwipe to yank your opponents whole board.
Some possibilities:
– Priest (Shadow Word Death/Ruin, not to mention he has other activators in Penance, Breath of the Infinite and Time Rip, this is actually pretty scary)
– Warrior (Shield Slam, Execute, Brawl, even Ramming Speed if the meta is right)
– Shaman (Torrent, Hagatha’s Scheme)
– Mage (Ray of Frost on weakened minions, Malygos Spells, Rolling Fireball)
Even classes without cheap hard removal like Druid (Bogbeam, Swipe, Starfall w/ quest) and Warlock (Nether Breath, Plague of Flames [it’ll resummon your dudes!]) might find a use, using him to snag a high-value minion who’s been weakened could still totally be worth it.
It’s too fair. Doesn’t make the cut in Quest Druid and Control Shaman might have better cards + have a hard time activating it. The only thing that seems appealing is Big Spells Druid with the new 10-cost spell but not sure that’ll be any good.
Might be good to have after next year’s rotation at least.
