WoW Classic in Hearthstone – Druid, Hunter, Warlock

World of Warcraft Classic, the reintroduction of WoW’s most memorable and nostalgic timeline, will be released on Augusth 27th. From there on, players can relive the golden times of the most successful multiplayer online game and experience how WoW played out right after its original release.

As we all know, Hearthstone was built upon the Warcraft universe and the World of Warcraft itself. In this upcoming series, we want to honor the beginnings of both World of Warcraft and Hearthstone and thus feature a “vanilla” deck for each of the nine available Classic WoW classes. Want to know more about your favorite class? Not sure what you want to play on release? Check out our first three decks featuring Druid, Hunter and Warlock!

Druid

It is safe to say that the design behind the Druid class in World of Warcraft really brought unique and brand-new features to multiplayer online player games.

The ability to shapeshift between different states not only opened up several different gameplay loops but also enriched the lore and fantasy for every single Druid player. That fantasy was partly used in Hearthstone as well, as multiple cards show. First there is Druid’s cat form, the agility-based “melee damage” state that relies on heavy bleed damage and stealth attacks. Pounce for example is used as a damage opener while in stealth.

Bear form increases the Druid’s health and is used to tank monsters while questing or in a dungeon run. For bears, Swipe is one of the most important skills, dealing Cleave damage between several enemies and thus increasing threat for tanking them.

Druid of the Claw perfectly shows Druid’s shapeshifting abilities, and the design behind “Choose One” cards perfectly translates the core fantasy of the class.

Apart from Druid’s attacks, damage spells can be cast in normal form as well as in Moonkin form, dealing additional damage. Cards like Moonfire and Starfire underline the lore behind Druid’s affection towards the night elf deity Elune.

If that wouldn’t be enough, Druids are pretty decent healers as well! Healing Touch is a fast and mana-efficient healing spell, and Innervate is one of the most important mana-regenerating spells in the whole game.

For the minion side of things, we spiced up our list with a favorite Druid thing: TREES. Both Ancient of War and Ancient of Lore are living buildings in Warcraft III and present in every night elf town in WoW, and Keeper of the Grove showcases the origins of the Druid class as sons and daughters of Cenarius.

Druids are the jack-of-all-trades of Classic World of Warcraft. They deal damage, they tank, they heal. If you feel like you are capable of doing everything at once, choose Druid!

Hunter

Besides Warlock, Hunter is the second pet class in Classic WoW. The love for rare beasts and other wildlife animals forms the foundation for the Hunter class fantasy, and that shows in Hearthstone’s class design as well!

First off, there is Animal Companion which summons all three of Rexxar’s closest companions. We are aware that only Misha can be found in Classic WoW together with one of the most famous champions of the Horde; however, we couldn’t get ourselves to exclude the most iconic Hunter spell in the game.

Another iconic spell is Hunter's Mark. We still don’t understand how the spell effect translate in to WoW’s original use of Hunter’s Mark, because there it marked a target with a big red arrow while increasing attack power of all range attackers; it also hindered classes like Rogue to get back into stealth. Well, at least the red arrow made it into Hearthstone!

Despite the questionable design of Hunter’s Mark, both Arcane Shot and Rapid Fire of Hearthstone do the exact same thing compared to World of Warcraft. Raw damage as well as attack speed increase. The case of Rapid Fire is particularly interesting, because it has just been printed with Rise of Shadows and the Twinspell keyword although it is one of the most iconic Vanilla Hunter mechanics.

Besides self-casted spells, traps are another core mechanic of WoW Hunters. To establish something like the Secret mechanic may have been the most accurate design decision in terms of class gameplay and fantasy across all nine WoW classes. In Vanilla WoW, it’s quite hard to distinguish Hunter’s traps on the ground; they are also able to lay them right under your feet, making them almost invisible.

To include Eaglehorn Bow really encapsulated the Hunter spirit in Hearthstone as well. Eaglehorn Long Bow – as it is called in WoW – was one of the few powerful world drops in Vanilla, and one of the best bows for Hunters to have. Its attack speed was quite high, making it a perfect fit for both PvP and PvE.

To have a bit more minion pressure at hand we also added a couple of the most beloved Hunter pet archetypes to the list: Webspinner, Ironbeak Owl, Oasis Snapjaw and Savannah Highmane all were tameable beasts back in Vanilla WoW and offered different special pet abilities.

A very special card in Hunter’s toolkit is Tracking. To search through your deck is a very common theme in trading card games, and Hunter’s ability to track several things like humanoids, beasts, or even undead and elementals in World of Warcraft perfectly fits that design translation. We had to add Secretkeeper to the Secret package, and while a random female blood elf may not look like a Classic WoW character, its flavor text

Where is Mankrik’s wife? She’ll never tell.

points towards one of original Warcraft’s biggest memes.

Warlock

Warlock always has been relying heavily on its own cards, and that doesn’t come from nowhere. As one of the most versatile classes, Warlock didn’t really need any support while leveling to level 60 back in Vanilla WoW.

Shadow Bolt as well as Corruption showcase the core kit of Warlock’s damage spells which relies on heavy damage-over-time effects. Drain Life and Hellfire are perfect examples for the balance of life and death; while one spell sacrifices damage to heal you over time, the other spell does insane area damage while damaging your character.

As one of the two pet classes, Warlock’s leveling success is dictated by the use of its demons. Flame Imp, Voidwalker and Felstalker are the first demons that a Warlock can control permanently. Each of them has their own purpose, may it be tanking, dealing damage or interrupting enemy spells. An honorable mention goes out to a demon called Succubus, which got traded with Felstalker just recently; in Classic WoW, it is able to put enemies to sleep.

Besides their permanent pets, Warlocks can also summon powerful demons for a short amount of time. Dread Infernal was summon through an area damage ability called Summon Infernal, while an ability called Doom had a small chance to summon a Doomguard that dealt tons of single target damage. In hindsight one has to acknowledge that the flavor of both demons have been perfectly transported to the Hearthstone universe.

We also snuck in a minion called Voidcaller from the Naxxramas adventure, just because it synergizes so well with this list. Yes, these spellcaster Voidwalkers only started to appear in masses during the Burning Crusade, but we remember certain Voidcaller from Darkshore back in Vanilla, so its inclusion lore-wise makes toootal sense!

Last but not least, Summoning Portal depicts Warlock’s real use for most other players: The ability to summon group members to any location. Be prepared to eternally serve as a port-bot for your guild if you choose to play Warlock, but also know that this class may be one of the most fun and convenient ones to level through Classic WoW!

They should make this a tavern brawl. You get one of the decks at random and battle another class.
