Saviors of Uldum Card Reviews #7 - Ancient Mysteries, Crystal Merchant, Dune Sculptor, Garden Gnome, Hyena Alpha, Injured Tol'vir, Mischief Maker And More!
Yeah when I started playing Shaman was my second least favorite because of his hero power. But it was really the evolve mechanic that got me playing shaman a lot. Also Tunnel Trogger and Totem Golem make a sweet early curve. Shaman is maybe the weirdest class, but it does offer a lot of different ways to play. Like you can go heavy aggro and burn spells, or aggro with token flooding and bloodlust, or there is various ways to do control as well, and other weird comboish decks like Muckmaker or whatever. Basically Shaman gets some interesting and weird class cards that I always have to at least check out. Also in the last couple years they have finally been getting some interesting legendaries like Electra Stormsurge and Zentimo, whereas in the early years they usually got crappy legends.

I really like these card reviews and I would like to share my own thoughts. I think you nailed it on most of them though and I only have a few I would make small changes to. I will say however that some of your rankings seemed too close, maybe a few cards that were 8’s could have been 7 or 6. Like the Hyena seems like one of the strongest cards in the set, and I would say a 9 is fine if it doesn’t turn out to be a 10, but some of the cards ranked as 8 don’t seem close to Hyena in power level.
Beaming Sidekick – I think 8 is much too high. A 6 would be more fair. I do agree it will be played in some Zoolock decks and possibly other heavy aggro decks. But it’s only playable in those decks, and then it’s just ok I think. It only has one power, doesn’t really affect the board, and doesn’t give you any cards. I think there’s already enough good one drops that this is one that would be cut. I think the Jar dealer card that has deathrattle get another 1 drop would be better than this one.
Body Wrapper – I would put this as a 5, because as you said yourself it could be useful in highlander decks. I think highlander decks will be popular because of Zephyrs and this is a card that would usually be played in them.
Crystal Merchant – I think this one is underrated, I think it’s one of the best cards in the set. Anytime you have draw a card on something it’s probably good. I would put this at a 9 if not a 10. I mean you can kind of think of it as an acolyte of pain for druid. just playing it on turn 3 means you will definitely get one card out of it, and if they don’t remove your 1-4 you will get two or more cards. That does require to not use all mana on future turns, but you can just use removal and keep it alive and draw cards.
Wild Hare – I also think this is underrated at 3, I think it’s worth a 5 or even 6. True that it’s not as good as microtech controller, but that does see play in token aggro decks. Also this gives more consistency to tokens. Now with this and micro tech there are two 3 mana cards that make 3 bodies. I think the beast tag means this could see play in hunter, possibly in token decks like druid or elsewhere.
History Buff – This is one of my favorite cards in the set, so I’m probably just biased because saying it’s an 8 seems like a stretch. But I really enjoy playing straightforward games where I am just trying to curve out minions, and this seems to go perfectly into that strategy, which isn’t too out there for many decks. Also 3 mana 3-4 are my favorite minions because they can usually survive the turn you play them. So in straightforward decks that are trying to curve out minions this seems solid, but it is true it’s not that exciting. Also my favorite deck in Wild is my hand buff Paladin and this will fit there well.
Mischief Maker – Again I’m biased but this is one of my favorite cards in the set as well. It’s fun to cause Mischief! I can understand the low ranking though, I wouldn’t actually say this is even a 5. But it is definitely going to be a lot of fun to play, I plan to craft it right away and mess with peoples new decks. I have a control warrior deck I am playing that uses two Heckler bots and two Unseen Saboteurs, just because it’s very fun to mess with people. I also find it less insulting to do that to people than to be OTK by people. I mean any good OTK deck just invalidates all other decks that aren’t aggro or also OTK. So mischief cards have the added bonus of REALLY screwing up OTK decks, which deserve to be messed with. OK I’ve gone off the rails here, um, time to step away.

It’s funny that you both have Warlock as number one, while for me it’s number 9. The reason though is I love flavor and Warlock has the worst flavor for me because I don’t like the scary cards. And to be honest I have always thought that Warlock is easily the best class with the best hero power, so it’s too easy to make good decks with. It is fun to play though, I enjoy all classes. My favorite is Druid because it has great flavor, and Choose One is awesome because I like games with decisions. I have been playing since beta but my fav classes are the same, mostly Rogue has risen and Mage has fallen, nerfing my fav card Mana Wyrm was the last straw. My ranking, along with approx. ranked wins, follows.
Druid – 2300
Hunter – 1500
Rogue – 1100
Mage – 1400
Shaman – 1300
Paladin – 1300
Warrior – 1000
Priest – 900
Warlock – 600
Saviors of Uldum Card Reviews #6 - Embalming Ritual, Shadow of Death, Siamat, King Phaoris, Wretched Reclaimer, Activate the Obelisk, Bazaar Burglary and More!
Hi I really enjoyed these reviews and I think you do a great analysis, I would agree with just about everything you’ve said here. Looking forward to going back to reading the first 5. However you did forget to mention that Pharoh’s gift helps out the Tiger Spirit for Paladin which is enough to get me to play it. Tiger Tokens!
Vulpera Scoundrel
I can’t believe I overlooked that, it is clearly a fox based on art and name. I love cats but foxes are cool they are like cat/dog hybrids.
Mogu Fleshshaper
Considering everyone overlooked that 5-5 card like this that got nerfed into a 2-5 it was so good, and it still sees play as a 2-5 without rush, i think this will definitely be played. In the decks that want it, it will often be 0-2 mana for a 3-4 rush which is awesome.
Naga Sand Witch
I’m saying 2 stars. It’s too situational, usually it’s a 5-5 for 5. It requires a drawback of not having cheap spells in hand while also having big spells in hand. It can definitely enable some powerful plays but it’s gonna be inconsistent. Also I’m not sure if there are enough other rewards for a mage to play mostly big spells like there was with dragon’s breath in standard.
Vulpera Scoundrel
It’s a cool cat rolling dice, a cheap minion that gives value, 4 stars I like it. Really fun art.
Kobold Sandtrooper
this is a card that’s easy to ignore at first, but I have a feeling I will get used to seeing it in the future. It seems like a fine card for an aggro deck that’s just trying to go to face. 3 stars. Memba Leper Gnome before it was nerfed? and Knife Juggler and Abusive Sgt. Those were the days.
Golden Scarab
awesome call back to original League of Explorers set, I remember crafting a golden Scarab back then because it was novel to discover golden cards
Sahket Sapper
Never give me the odds! That sounds like a sweet game you had with unending Catrinas. I still choose to ignore the stats though because I never netdeck so my Pogo bunny deck isn’t the same as ones on the net. I have definitely lost to bomb warrior with bunnies before, but it always feels like it will be an easy win for me. It’s so sad they had to Hall of Fame Vanish before the bunnies rotated though. That was one of the best cards in the deck.
Bazaar Burglary
I give it a 4 out of 5. Even though there will be times you can complete the quest by turn 5 or 6, that won’t happen consistently. So on average this will be an unlimited 3-2 weapon in the late game. That’s definitely good but there’s already two Rogue deck styles that have stronger late games, and Rogue isn’t particularly adept at surviving to the late game in the first place. The other Rogue decks are Spectral Cutlass Rogue and Pogo Bunny Rogue. I really don’t see why this quest in a burgle rogue deck would be stronger than a pogo bunny rogue deck in the late game. Consider that vs control warrior Pogo bunnies spell certain doom, whereas an unlimited 3-2 weapon can be practically negated by their hero power alone. This card is definitely strong but I don’t think it will have a good place until after rotation next year.
Sahket Sapper
That is an awesome situation to imagine. But I have to put in a defense of my Rogue vs Warrior. When I play Pogo Bunny Rogue vs Warrior I feel like a bigger favorite than any other deck vs warrior. Also thief rogue that plays Tess and Togwoggle’s scheme on her can outlast Warrior as well.
Activate the Obelisk
I don’t know if this is a 4 or a 5 but it’s really strong. My instinct is to give it a snap 5 stars but I’ve been wrong before. But it doesn’t seem like much to ask to play this and achieve it, and giving a minion 3-3 every turn is a scary thought to be up against. I certainly played a lot with the hunter hero power that gives a beast 2-2 and that was really strong.
Siamat
lol it took me a minute but I had the same thought, I had to deduct part of a point lol
Wretched Reclaimer
Seems like a solid card that will see play, does require other cards on the board to be good but it’s only 3 mana so not hard to play one on same turn in later game. I give it 4 stars since it’s very powerful but not good on it’s own. Also that art looks like the Golden Version will be awesome with the swirling portal.
Khartut Defender
Seems worse than the 4 mana 2-5 taunt reborn, unless you can get a lot of mileage out of the health or deathrattle aspect.
Sahket Sapper
I think this card is good. The floor is a 4 mana 4-4 pirate, not great. But it’s not too hard to imagine playing this on turn 4 on an empty board and then messing up their development. However I also just imagined playing this on turn 4 vs warrior then they play Dyn o Matic and it bounces back.
King Phaoris
It’s probably too expensive and situational, but the payoff is big enough it could be worth a slot in some decks. My control Shaman deck that plays Shudderwock could throw this in and probably do some work.
Great reviews again. I agree with everything, although there are a few I would rate a couple points higher or lower. For example, Penance and Waterbearer are both ranked 7, but I have a feeling we will be seeing Penance a great deal more. For me Penance is a 9, in that it will probably be a two of in most Priest decks. I think you nailed it on Quicksand Elemental, it will definitely be played and be good. I think Worthy Expedition might be better than a 7 because six options for one mana seems good enough to be played in most Druid decks regardless of style. Vulpera Scoundrel is one of my favorite cards in the set, and may see more play as time goes on and people realize the solid value she provides, similar to Stonehill Defender as you mentioned, although he played double duty as a defensive card so he is maybe better, but he was a 9 if not a 10. Also I think Temple Berserker might be good enough to see play in a variety of Aggro and Reborn decks, I’d give him a 6 or 7. And lastly Zephrys is my favorite card as well, I will definitely craft him on day one.
