Top Standard & Wild Legend Decks – United in Stormwind Week 7 – September 2021

This week has been pretty dry when it comes to new decks. Many players are already tired of the meta, while GMs are focusing on the competitive side since we’re in the middle of the season. Talking about the meta changes is a bit pointless because it’s basically the same as last week (and the week before that).

So instead let’s focus on what comes next and when we should expect bigger meta shifts. Luckily, a big patch is coming out on Tuesday, hopefully shaking things up. We’re getting 14 card changes in total – 7 buffs, 5 nerfs, 1 ban, and 1 redesign. If done correctly, a patch like that can have a huge impact on the meta. In this case – mostly on Wild meta, because the ban is 100% related to Questline Warlock (either the Questline itself will get banned or some supporting cards, but the former is more likely in our opinion). Nerfs should obviously affect Standard too, but we’re even more interested about buffs. Nerfs will definitely do a better job at hitting the strongest decks, but buffs can make certain previously weak and unplayable archetypes shine again. Buffs seem to be focused on Warrior, Mage and Hunter. What I would like to see are some Control/Big Warrior buffs, Elemental or Hero Power Mage buffs and maybe Beast Hunter buffs? All of those decks are relatively close to being playable, so between nerfs and making some of their cards stronger, they can start showing up in the meta – even if they won’t suddenly become T1, having another T2 or T3 option is not a bad thing. Old Guardian wrote an article with his predictions for the patch if you’re interested.

But what comes after? Well, that’s easy – mini-set. But the harder question would be when. Normally September 28 or October 5 would be my guess, but at this point, I don’t know. September 28 is only a week after upcoming patch, they probably wouldn’t release that big of a patch just before mini-set, they would wait an extra week. And October 5? Releasing it right before Mercenaries? That also doesn’t seem right. So my current guess is that they will release it… alongside Mercenaries, on October 12. I’m not a big fan of this solution (two big releases at once will be a nightmare to cover), but it seems likely. And I guess it makes some sense for the players – not everyone is interested in Mercenaries, so while some of them will focus on that format, others will still have something to play with (mini-set). But right now it’s just guessing – we won’t more until it’s announced – and the announcement should drop a week before release if we base it on the Wailing Caverns. No matter when it comes out, though, it should have a solid impact on the meta. The last two mini-sets certainly had – they weren’t groundbreaking, but they introduced some new archetypes and shifted meta power levels quite a bit.

If they indeed release miniset together with mercenaries, of course players focus will be divided. And I think it would be badly executed, especially if they wanted to showcase this big new mode.

Like I said somewhere, judging by the silence and not even an early access to any gameplay at all, I can bet the mode is not ready. They either faced with a lot of unstability, or even breaking-game bugs.

So I dare to assume, miniset will still go on, and Mercenaries will be delayed once more as far as 3rd expansion, or some later date if they want to have big special showcase.
