Top Standard & Wild Legend Decks – Showdown in the Badlands + Delve into Deepholm (Week 11) – January 2024

Delve into Deepholm mini-set has been out for ~10 days now. And you could safely say that it was one of the most impactful mini-sets ever. Not only did we get a couple of new, powerful archetypes, but some of the older ones got stronger with new cards.

The meta is mostly split in two, as usual. Diamond (and below) has a completely different meta from high Legend. Diamond is FULL of Aggro Paladins with the new Excavate package. As you can probably imagine, giving Paladin, a class that can notoriously give a minion +10/+10 out of nowhere, access to Windfury has been an amazing idea. Shroomscavate is crazy powerful in Paladin – leaving a single minion was always risky, but now it’s basically a guaranteed death unless you have tons of Armor or multiple Taunt minions in their way. But we don’t even have to go as far – any buffed minion will benefit from Windfury heavily, even those earlier in the game. Not every build runs

On the other hand, high Legend is still packed with Excavate Rogues. The deck is still seen from time to time in Diamond and lower, but it’s way less popular than it was before the patch. Because Rogues have a good matchup vs Paladins and because high Legend players are generally better at exploiting the fact that Excavate Paladin is a very straightforward deck, Paladins are much less common at those ranks. Because of that, another deck has spiked in popularity – Mill Druid. Mill Druid really sucks against Paladin (it’s like a 30/70 matchup), which is why you don’t see a lot of them in Diamond, but you do see a lot of them in Legend, because they have a good matchup vs Excavate Rogue (which keeps Paladin in check). Got it?

And finally, we have Sludge Warlock, which has seen a big uptick in popularity after the mini-set. New additions like Elementium Geode, Trogg Gemtosser or Chaos Creation pushed it over the edge and straight into Tier 1. Right now it’s one of the strongest decks in the meta, and it’s one that’s commonly seen across all ranks. One of its strengths is consistency – it works well against all metas, with the worst matchups being around 45/55, so still very winnable. The deck is also still being optimized, so there’s a chance that it’s actually #1 in the game overall, and we just don’t know it yet. Another deck seen across all ranks (despite not getting anything in the mini-set) is Plague DK – it’s been consistently solid for the last couple of months. It was never at the top, but it’s always a solid low Tier 1/high Tier 2 option.

As you can see, the mini-set has shifted the meta a bit. However, in terms of fun, it really depends on your personal preferences. I’m still having fun because I really love all kinds of Ramp Druid decks, so Mill version has been working great for me. However, even I hate facing mirror matchups, so I have to imagine that for someone who doesn’t like this kind of playstyle at all, it’s simply a nightmare. And I see a lot of players voicing this opinion – many are simply unhappy with the meta. They mostly complain about Paladins and Druids, so those are the two main nerf targets.

We haven’t heard anything about a patch yet, but I expect one to come soon. Earlier this week, Hat confirmed that the next week is a “patch window”. And while we haven’t heard anything since (probably because of the recent layoffs at Microsoft, mostly affecting Activision Blizzard – they tend to drop any communication around big, bad events like that), we can safely assume that the patch itself is still on the way. My guess is, just like always, either Tuesday or Thursday, since those are the most common patch release dates.
