Top Standard & Wild Legend Decks – Perils in Paradise (Week 9) – September 2024

Well, last Sunday I expected to see a balance patch this week, but it turns out that Blizzard had other plans. While it’s true that Big Spell Mage is no longer nearly as popular as it was at its peak (it peaked around 40% in Diamond, right now it’s around 20%), it’s still the most popular deck in the game by a big margin. And it still has the same horrible gameplay pattern. For me, it’s not about the power level, I just don’t think it should be possible to get a 4/5 and four 3/6’s (that can notably deal 12 face damage or kill some small minions right away) on Turn 4-5. It’s just not fun to face, even if you can somehow scramble an answer.

Other than Big Spell Mage, the meta is actually very diverse. I just updated our Standard Tier List a few days ago and I was surprised by how many decks are playable. I can’t say that it’s my favorite meta ever, but every single class has some viable (or at least semi-viable) options and that’s quite a rare sight.

The big news next week is that Hearthstone is finally back in China. If everything goes according to the plan, the game will return to the country on September 25. I’m gonna be honest, that’s great news. The game was quite popular there, so shutting it down was losing a big source of revenue. Some players have switched to different servers, but most have quit because starting from scratch in a card game sucks. And now they will get back their old accounts AND all of the Standard cards released between shutdown and now… in Golden versions. They will be special copies that disenchant for 1 Dust, so they will still have to keep buying new stuff, but that’s the whole point. They need to be generous to bring players back, and those players will keep spending money on the game in the future. Which is ultimately going to benefit all of us.

Anyway, even though we didn’t get a balance update this week, there’s still a high chance we’ll get one soon. The usual balance update cadence is ~2 weeks after a major patch (in this case 30.4), but we’ll see if Blizzard actually decides to pull the trigger. It might make sense to release a patch around Hearthstone’s return to China, but nothing has been confirmed yet. Other than that, we should expect patch 30.6 and a new expansion announcement in mid-October (so yes, a few weeks from now). But it’s still a bit too early to speculate about that.

Below is a full list of the Legend decks from last week, sorted by the highest placement.
