Happy New Year, everyone! It’s our first Legend decks roundup from 2022, and there’s actually quite a lot to share.
The balance update which happened before Holidays felt a bit underwhelming at first – most of the decks that were good pre-patch were also good post-patch. But it took some more time to see things more clearly, and for the new meta to form. Rogue is by far the biggest winner – the Burgle/Thief build in particular. When I was starting my Christmas break, the deck was quite unremarkable – some players had success with it (like J_Alex), but it wasn’t a very common ladder build. It started becoming more common in Legend like a week ago, reaching 10-15% play rate. However, over the last couple of days, it has absolutely exploded across the ladder. It’s now reaching 20-25% popularity in high Diamond and Legend, completely shoving away the previously dominant Questline Warrior. The numbers are still much worse at low ranks, but the deck is quite tricky to play, so I expect a more straightforward one (Warrior) to remain on the top there.
Other than that, Mage looked to be nearly dead early in Alterac Valley, but the class has been sort-of revived. While Mozaki OTK Mage is the most popular/strongest build, Hero Power Mage (which got buffed quite heavily) is also… okay-ish. It’s not a great deck, but it’s sort of playable, and that’s a good start. I think that a few more buffs could turn it into a viable option. Irondeep Trogg is actually still an okay card even though it got nerfed hard (but it’s no longer busted), and so are the decks running it like Libram Paladin or Face Hunter. On the other hand, Freeze Shaman has dropped like a stone – the Bolner OTK variant is still pretty solid, but others aren’t performing very well in the current meta. A few Druid variants are rising – Ramp Druid, Beast Druid – and they look quite interesting. It’s hard to say how good they will be in the long run, but everything looks fun. Even Priest has seen some success with Questline build, out of all the options (it rarely comes down to winning a game with Shard, but hey).
Overall, the meta is – to be honest – pretty balanced. Whether you like the decks that are played is a whole different story, but there are a lot of options overall. Usually, a developed meta consists of less decks with higher play rate. Right now, even counting the current surge of Rogues, we’ve got just a couple of very popular builds, and then lots of viable decks with 1-3% play rate. Overall, I’d say that there are easily 20-25 viable decks in the current meta, and that’s a lot. I think that with another balance update, it could turn into one of the most balanced and diverse metas we had in a long time. Again, it doesn’t mean that you have to like it, but having so many good decks is, in my opinion, a healthy thing for the game.
