Top Standard & Wild Legend Decks – Forged in the Barrens Week 4 – April 2021

Balance patch has been out for nearly 2 weeks now, so the meta had enough time to settle. We actually see quite a bit more diversity than before the patch, which is always welcome. However, it still feels like the meta is imbalanced. Well, not only “feels” like that, but it’s a fact – stats point out to a clear Paladin problem. Overall win rate of the class is a few % higher than the others, which is a big deal. If we look at the specific decks, Paladin has like 2-3 builds in Tier 1, depending on the exact source. And one of them, perhaps even the best version, doesn’t even play Secrets. Aggro/Midrange Paladin builds, which pop up like mushrooms, don’t play any Secret synergies and simply rely on “good” Paladin cards to kill the opponent. And that… works. Works very well. Which points to a deeper Paladin problem than just Secrets – Sword of the Fallen was obviously overpowered, but it wasn’t the only problem. Cards like First Day of School, Hand of A'dal, Conviction (Rank 1), and of course the Neutral Crabrider carry the class hard.

Other than Paladin, Rush Warrior, Face Hunter or Secret Rogue have all been the “winners” of the patch, becoming both more popular and more powerful in the current meta. Token Druid and the good, old Spell Mage (now mostly without Deck of Lunacy) are also great. Decks like Control Warlock and Control Priest are in a weird position. They’re relatively popular and players often complain about their power level, but they don’t have stats to back it up – especially Warlock, which is a low T3 deck according to some sources, and yet it makes up for ~15% of the meta at certain ranks – mostly around Silver-Gold. Control Priest, on the other hand, is not THAT popular in lower ranks, but it seems to be one of the most common decks in Top 1k Legend (and admittedly, it also has a much higher win rate up there, which shows that it CAN be good if played by the right players and teched correctly to counter other common decks).

Looking at the stats, though, I expect another balance update soon. Patch 20.2 should be dropping within the next week or two at most (X.2 patches normally launch around a month into the expansion) – its biggest focus will of course be Battlegrounds (we already know that a new minion type – Quilboars – are coming), but I do think that they will fit a few nerfs in there – Paladin nerfs for sure, but maybe they will touch a couple more cards too. I think that the meta is pretty close to being relatively balanced, and a few more tweaks will definitely help with that.

How about making an article on tackling some of those agonizing achievements?
Because I’m still stuck with copying 5 enemy secrets at once. Or the fact that you need 200 sigils activated while you only have 4 of them. Just end my pain and kill me already!

Is this how Hearthstone has become? completing achievements should’ve been fun and all, but they made it so that you create non-competitive deck if you want to complete it.

I bet if Uldum in the past start using achievements, a useless card like Desert Obelisk will be added for sure.

I agree. Many of the achievements are essentially, “throw the game” to complete.

One thing I wish they would address is buffing legendaries that see no use. An example is cannon master with paladin. The card is basically unplayable in a secret paladin deck but in theory it should be the best card considering its a legendary geared for secrets.

Barrens is certainly not alone, but go through the legendaries and see how many are just complete whiffs by the developers.

So glad to know I’m not alone in this. I guess I just have to wait until the miniset arrive and complete those extra achievements altogether. Maybe it’s gonna save me some time losing multiple ranked games.

That’s why i play wild for the trophy, but yeah i totally agree, those who depend on your opponent like secret copy are simply impossible and others are really annoying.

I mean “have full hand tot turn with priest” you basically ask me to loose because i can’t play any cards.
