Nerfs are now out for nearly 2 weeks, and the meta is settling down. But settling down does’t mean that it’s solved.
Positions of the best meta decks have shifted slightly, and one new contender is slowly rising – Bomb Warrior, which looks very powerful. It’s a bit different than the Enrage Warrior build with Bomb package we’ve seen a while ago, it leans more towards Control with cards like Shield Slam or Bladestorm. Then, “Bomb” Warrior might be too much because it runs only 2x Wrenchcalibur as a way to put Bombs into the opponent’s deck (and Blastmaster Boom as a synergy), but thanks to Corsair Cache and Hoard Pillager, it’s not uncommon to put 5-6 Bombs into your opponent’s deck – even more in the longer games. Against decks that struggle with healing, that’s basically enough to kill them. And even against those who heal (such as Galakrond Priest), between the regular pressure and extra damage from the bombs, it works very well.
Spell Druid, both the regular version and Malygos version, have also turned out to be a force to reckon with. Their presence in the meta is undeniable, being one of the more popular and frankly better decks. Right now most of the builds have cut Kael'thas Sunstrider, which was the key card in the early versions, but after its nerf to 7 mana it was no longer THAT great (harder to pull off combos).
Another thing is that Tempo Demon Hunter is crawling up to the #1 spot in the meta (even though people aren’t sharing many of their climbs, simply because most of the players are already tired of the deck). It’s funny how may times I’ve read that Blizzard has killed Demon Hunter with the nerfs… I’ve been hearing it ever since the 2nd nerf patch. Yep, totally dead, no longer a Tier 1 deck and one of the best decks in the game. Well, of course, unlike during the memorable Day 1, the deck is no longer uncounterable – you can now play stuff that is good against it and have a decent time.
To be perfectly honest, I think that the meta is in a solid spot right now, with only a single class (RIP Shaman) having no representation whatsoever. I don’t expect any bigger balance updates soon – or maybe even not until the next expansion. Because remember that we’re already in the middle of the cycle – Ashes of Outland was released nearly 2 months ago, so the 2nd set of Year of the Phoenix is also coming in 2 months.

Not totally related, but I don’t know where else to ask this:
A little while ago, I think I read something on this site saying that if you delibrately lose at rank floors to tank your MMR, it won’t work (i.e. your MMR won’t fall), but I can’t find that article. Could you please point me towards the source for this/confirm that I’m misremebering?
I don’t remember anything like that, but we had a lot of stuff about the new ranked system, maybe it was during some Q&A with devs or something…
No Highlander Hunter?
The deck is very good, we’re just sharing the decks that pro players posted in social media, and as it happens we didn’t see any Highlander Hunters.
Do you think Quest Warlock will be hit hard by the rise of Bomb Warrior?
Yes, if Bomb Warrior becomes more popular, Quest Warlock will become much weaker. It’s a terrible matchup for the Warlock and the worst thing is that you can’t really tech against (other than Ooze which you already run, but it’s not enough).
