In patch 23.4 on June 1, 2022, Hearthstone released its most massive Book of Heroes solo adventure yet. Book of Heroes: Faelin includes 17 challenges! You can play the adventure as three different characters, and get new rewards for each different playthrough.
The first character you play will grant you the Ghost Ship card back. The second will give you a Standard pack, and the third will provide you with a Voyage to the Sunken City pack.
While this may all sound well and good, be warned. The three playthroughs are actually the same for the most part, and this is one long adventure, so there is a fair bit of work involved in earning those packs. But hey, that’s why we’re here to help you get through all this!
Challenge 1: The Leviathan (Prologue)
The first challenge is not really a challenge at all. You simply pick one of three characters you want to journey with: Grace Farsail, Sir Finley Mrrgglton, or Halus Sunwatcher.
Note that all characters have an achievement associated with them to use all nine of their discoverable abilities. They are added as a card in your deck, and you can complete their achievement only on the run where you have chosen them as your crew member.
You are also presented with the first three Lorebooks to read in this challenge. You need to read a total of 40 Lorebooks during your journeys for the full Restless Reader achievement.
Challenge 2: The Leviathan (Embarkation)
Challenge two serves as an introduction to the puzzles in the book. You are taught to use the right tools to repair parts of the Leviathan:
- Secondhand Wrench on Fuel Tank (left)
- Gnomish Hammer on Pressure Valves (right)
- Trusty Crowbar on Boiler (middle)
The tools are not always offered in the same order, but the equipment of the Leviathan is always the same!
After you have repaired your vessel, you are attacked by a Patrol Captain. It is a short and simple battle. If you want to complete achievements, this is a good time to choose weak abilities for your crew members to progress their achievements. Lorebooks also appear during the fight, as in subsequent challenges, and can progress the related achievement to read them.
Challenge 3: Ol’ Rattleswipe (Dangerous Waters)
You are attacked by a Pirate! Rattleswipe’s Hero Power is a Passive that forces you to guess who has the more expensive hand each turn. You need to guess right ten times for the Lucky Guess achievement. You can complete the achievement over multiple runs, so don’t worry about it.
Other than that, Rattleswipe is an unremarkable fight against a Pirate Warrior with some handbuffs.
Challenge 4: Captain Hooktusk (Always a Bigger Fish)
More Pirates arrive! Captain Hooktusk can turn your minions Dormant. Other than that, she is a regular Pirate with nothing nasty to worry about.
You need to defeat Captain Hooktusk in seven turns or less for the Shady Parrot achievement. Arbor Up is a great card to help with this.
Challenge 5: The Leviathan
This is the first real puzzle challenge in the book. You need to repair the Leviathan, as you need to do multiple times over the course of the adventure.
I will provide text instructions for all puzzles in this guide, and you can find a video of all the puzzle solutions for all challenges here:
Puzzle 1:
- Play Secondhand Wrench and attack the Ignition Fire (right).
- Use the Waterlogged spell on the Flooded Fuel Tank (left).
- Use Fireball on the Water Elemental that spawns.
- Attack the Damp Fuel Tank (left) with your equipped weapon.
Puzzle 2:
- Use the Waterlogged spell on the Flooded Boiler (second from left).
- Play Seafloor Gateway.
- Play Upgradeable Framebot.
- Play Seascout Operator.
- Play Trusty Crowbar and attack Ignition Fire (right).
- Attack the Damp Boiler (second from left) with your equipped weapon.
Puzzle 3:
- Use the Waterlogged spell on Flooded Pressure Valves (second from right).
- Play Azsharan Sweeper.
- Play Trench Surveyor and Dredge the Sunken Sweeper.
- Play Sunken Sweeper. You will always get the same Mechs.
- Equip Gnomish Hammer. This will make your next Mech cost zero. Do not attack.
- Play the zero-cost Spark Drill. Attack into the Taunt.
- Use all your Coins.
- Use the Sparks and Frostbolt on the Taunt, which dies.
- Attack Ignition Fire (right) with your equipped weapon.
- Attack Damp Pressure Valves (right) with your equipped weapon.
Challenge 6: Depends on the Hero!
Challenge six varies by the crew member you picked in the first challenge. Grace Farsail will meet Privateer Tom, whereas Sir Finley Mrrgglton and Halus Sunwatcher will meet Hurricane Elemental.
Privateer Tom is very happy to hit you in the face, so it is a good idea to pick up healing abilities when you can. Your deck is Garrote Rogue, so you need to set up card draw with Field Contact and use some spell-damage-improved Garrotes to finish off the opponent.
Hurricane Elemental is a much more regular fight where you use your typical Druid deck.
Challenge 7: Captain Maya (Abandon Ship)
In this rescue mission, you need to help sailors in distress. Attack the sailors to rescue them while your minions and you take two damage every turn. At the end of each turn, the left- and right-most Sailors or Cargo are destroyed, but more will always spawn when the board is empty, so you do not have to worry about losing them.
The achievement Cargo to Go is also part of this challenge. Rescue five or more Fragile Cargo to complete the achievement. Destroying Fragile Cargo will occasionally spawn minions, which are not destroyed even if they are the left- or right-most minions on the board. Fragile Cargo has no other uses apart from the achievement. This achievement can be completed over multiple runs, you do not have to grab them all in a single fight.
Challenge 8: Ozumat (A Colossal Problem)
This is one of the most painful fights in the book. Ozumat has a boardful of Tentacles, and its Health is the same as the total Health of all the Tentacles. When you kill a Tentacle, it becomes Dormant and returns in a few turns.
Picking the healing power for Caye is very useful to stay alive through the early part of this fight.
Important: When I’m writing this, the fight is bugged! If any Tentacles are destroyed through a destroy effect, such as Deadly Shot, Ozumat will not lose Health. This makes the fight unwinnable, as the only way to damage Ozumat is through the Tentacles. Overkilling does not help either. If Ozumat’s Health is higher than the total Health of the Tentacles during the fight, you need to start over as you cannot kill it from there. Try to avoid random destruction effects during the fight so that you can complete it.
There are even more bugs in the fight as of now, as sometimes Ozumat just randomly dies to its own Spreading Madness even though it has Health left. Furthermore, Spreading Madness does not damage random minions properly, but deals all of its damage to a single target instead.
The Efficient Octo Sought achievement is part of this fight. To complete the achievement, you need to kill all Tentacles on the same turn. This is by far the most difficult achievement in the book. Note that the Tentacles do not have to die at the same time! The key card in your deck to help with this is Spammy Arcanist, other than that you need to Discover some area-of-effect damage randomly or get a really wide board to survive for some time to get the kills from attacks.
Challenge 9: The Leviathan (Fighting Fires)
This is the second puzzle stage in the book. You need to fix the Leviathan again!
Puzzle 1:
- Cast Freezing Potion on the Fiery Fuel Tank (left).
- Cast Frostbolt on the Fire Elemental that spawned.
- Cast Icicle on the Fire Elemental to draw a card.
- Equip Secondhand Wrench. Attack the Fresh Seawater (right) with it.
- Attack the Ashy Fuel Tank (left) with your equipped weapon.
Puzzle 2:
- Cast Freezing Potion on the Fiery Boiler (second from left).
- Cast Scalding Geyser on the Greasefire Elemental (right) that spawned. Dredge the Molten Giant.
- Attack the Greasefire Elemental with one of your minions.
- Play Tuskarrrr Trawler. Dredge the Sunken Sentinel.
- Attack the Greasefire Elemental with all of your minions. You will draw and equip Trusty Crowbar.
- Attack Fresh Seawater (right) with your equipped weapon.
- Attack Ashy Boiler (second from left) with your equipped weapon.
Puzzle 3:
- Cast Freezing Potion on the Fiery Pressure Valves (right).
- Attack the Selfish Shellfish (right) that spawned with Spark Drill.
- Play both Sparks and attack the Selfish Shellfish with them.
- Play Flamestrike.
- Play Crystal Power to heal Ashy Pressure Valves (third from left).
- Play Bag of Coins and the Coins within.
- Play Lightning Storm.
- Attack the remaining Taunt with your 1/1 and 2/2 minions.
- Play Bag of Coins and a Coin.
- Equip Gnomish Hammer. Attack Fresh Seawater (right) with your equipped weapon.
- Attack Ashy Pressure Valves (right) with your equipped weapon.
Challenge 10: Depends on the Hero!
Challenge ten varies by the crew member you picked in the first challenge. Grace Farsail and Halus Sunwatcher will meet Murgaloc, whereas Sir Finley Mrrgglton will meet Cousin Errgl.
Murgaloc is your basic Murloc fight with one ticket to fame: Murloc Menace that can wipe your board. Other than that, there is nothing to worry about. You use your usual deck.
You have the Salvage Hero Power in this fight! To complete the Superb Salvager achievement, you need to use it to create a 20/20 Mech. That requires that 20 Mechs have died in the fight. One of Ini’s powers gives you more Mechs that you can use for this.
Cousin Errgl is a bit of Murloc-on-Murloc action, with your deck being a Murloc deck too. You also meet Finley’s Mum and Dad!
Challenge 11: Depends on the Hero!
Challenge eleven varies by the crew member you picked in the first challenge. Grace Farsail and Sir Finley Mrrgglton will meet Naga Guard, whereas Halus Sunwatcher will meet Enchanted Statue.
The Naga Guard’s Hero Power gives it an Ancient Trident that will cast random spells whenever Naga Guard attacks. The results of this are, well, random, but not too dangerous overall.
You have the Salvage Hero Power in this fight! To complete the Superb Salvager achievement, you need to use it to create a 20/20 Mech. That requires that 20 Mechs have died in the fight. One of Ini’s powers gives you more Mechs that you can use for this.
You will face Enchanted Statue with a Control Warrior deck and your Hero Power can give your minions Charge. It is a fairly easy encounter.
Challenge 12: Ruins of House Evenlar (Ghosts of Memory)
A simple survival mission. Just don’t play your Arcane Anomaly straight into the opponent’s Hero Power on turn one! Overall, try to prevent the Hero Power from scaling and you will be fine.
Challenge 13: Mysterious Visitor (Shadows Revealed)
In this fight, you will have to play with a Priest deck. Buff your minions with your Hero Power, but avoid fatigue if it looks like the fight will go long. Healing powers on your Heroes are useful here once again as the opponent has tons of damage spells and will mostly use everything on your face. Especially Ambassador Faelin with the healing power is great.
Try to get as much healing as you can, use Excavated Evil to weaken your opponent’s draws, and get minions on the board that sometimes distract the AI from the real goal of the game. This is a tough one.
Challenge 14: Abyssal Jailor (Lightless Depths)
It’s another Priest game, this time against a Curse Warlock with some hard removal and Faceless Ragers. The twist is that the cost of your cards changes throughout the game. One of the easier fights, anyway.
Challenge 15: The Leviathan (The Stormcoil Override)
The final set of puzzles in the book!
Puzzle 1:
- Spend the Coins.
- Attack Ini’s Toolkit with the Hungry Orca.
- Choose Secondhand Wrench.
- Cast Waterlogged on the Flooded Fuel Tank (left).
- Play Southsea Scoundrel. Discover Sea Reaver.
- Play Parrrley.
- Play Expert Calibration. Summon Ignition Fire.
- Cast Frostbolt on the Taunt minion.
- Equip Secondhand Wrench.
- Attack the Ignition Fire (right) with your equipped weapon.
- Attack the Damp Fuel Tank (left) with your equipped weapon.
Puzzle 2:
- Cast Runed Orb on the undamaged 6/6 Abyssal Warden. It does not matter what you Discover.
- Play a Coin.
- Attack the 6/4 Abyssal Warden that you previously cast the Runed Orb on with your 4/4 Bubblebot.
- Attack the 6/3 Abyssal Warden with your 3/3 Clockwork Goblin.
- Play Expert Calibration. Summon Fresh Seawater.
- Cast Freezing Potion on the Fiery Boiler (second from left). Choose Trusty Crowbar.
- Equip Trusty Crowbar.
- Play Gone Fishin'. Dredge Animated Broomstick.
- Cast Fireball on the 7/7 Taunt minion.
- Play Animated Broomstick and use it to attack and kill the now 7/1 Taunt minion.
- Attack Fresh Seawater with your equipped weapon.
- Attack Ashy Boiler (second from left) with your equipped weapon.
Puzzle 3:
- Play Water Tap.
- Play Front Lines now that it costs 0.
- Attack a Naga Giant with Spark Drill.
- Play Metaltooth Leaper.
- Attack two different Naga Giants that you have not attacked before with the Gaia’s Drills.
- Play Rocket Boots on Remote-Controlled Golem to give it Rush.
- Cast Waterlogged on Flooded Pressure Valves
- Attack the fourth Naga Giant with Remote-Controlled Golem. All remaining Naga Giants die.
- Equip Gnomish Hammer. Note that you have three different weapons in your hand!
- Attack Ignition Fire with your equipped weapon.
- Attack Damp Pressure Valves with your equipped weapon.
- Play Ini’s Security Question – the correct answer is 050404 – Ini’s mana cost and stats!
- Equip Override Drill.
- Attack the Leviathan (opponent’s Hero portrait) with your equipped weapon!
Challenge 16: Handmaiden Zainra (Test of Loyalties)
At the start of the fight, there is no apparent win condition. Zainra is immune and the game tells you nothing. However, it is enough to survive. Just keep defending and you will eventually complete the challenge.
Challenge 17: Queen Azshara (The Unfathomable)
The final fight against Queen Azshara progresses through multiple stages. Azshara is immune at the start and you need to defeat her minions to progress the fight.
The first minion is Commander Sivara, a 3/5 Taunt Naga who freezes one of your minions at the end of each of Azshara’s turns.
When you defeat Commander Sivara, you get to choose your next opponent, either Blackwater Behemoth or Radiance of Azshara (abilities do not match the collectible cards). I prefer to face Radiance of Azshara.
The third opponent is a 5/10 Taunt Lady Ashvane that deals 3 damage to two random enemy minions at the end of Azshara’s turn.
The fourth opponent is Orgozoa, a 3/7 minion that summons a 1/1 Nagaling at the start of each turn and destroys all of Azshara’s minions when defeated.
The fifth opponents are where going gets real. Silivaz and Pashmar must die together, otherwise, they come back to life. You need to find an area-of-effect damage spell to take them both out at the same time. There are Starfalls in your deck!
The sixth opponent is a 6/10 Za’qul, which gives you an Abyssal Curse half of the time at the end of Azshara’s turn.
After Za’qul dies, Azshara joins the fight herself. She is no longer immune, and you can start chipping away at her 100 Health! You do not need to get her all the way to zero to find your escape though. Once you do, you can head over to your Achievements to claim your reward!
After your first playthrough, you can play through the book again two more times for one pack per playthrough, or you can pursue the achievements associated with the book.
Achievements
There are several achievements associated with the Book of Heroes: Faelin.

Superb Salvager. Construct a 20/20 Salvage Bot using any rank of the Salvage Hero Power. You have access to this Hero Power in the Murgaloc and Naga Guard encounters, and you need 20 Mechs to die to construct the big Salvage Bot. Note that Ini can get the power to generate more Mechs.
Shady Parrot. Defeat Captain Hooktusk in seven turns or less.
Into the Depths. Awarded for your first playthrough.
Deeper into the Depths. Awarded for playing through the book with another character.
Thoroughly into the Depths. Awarded for playing through the book with all three characters.
definitely wouldn’t call this a complete guide.
I have had to frequently use other forums to get the answers I need outside of the puzzles particularly fight 16 where you’ve made no effort to explain the actual point of the fight
With the nerf to Lightning Bloom that it is always in the opening hand and you draw a second one immidiatly, it seems that the Ozumat encounter it’s not winnable. They know of this issue? And why replace innervate with Lightining Bloom if you know you are going to nerf it? Forgot about the adventure when it came out and know I can’t finish it grrr
for challenge 15, there’s a way to avoid part of the puzzle. Simply summon your trench surveyor and then use rocket boots on it to draw waterlogged. You avoid all of the nonsense with the naga giants and can jump straight to the hammering. Though I am confused as to how, after equipping the override drill, your hero can attack a third time, since he doesn’t have mega windfury and has already attacked twice before.
Abyssal Jailor is listed as one of the easier fights, and Ozumat as one of the harder. I won Ozumat quickly when he killed himself with his own spell. Then I slammed my face against the Abyssal Jailor for 2 dozen attempts.
Chose Halus Sunwatcher as the Sidekick and Challenge 10 is unbeatable!? I’m in my 20th attempt and the cards you get (always the same) cannot beat the Murloc. I’ve tried all combinations, mulligans, whatever. Unbeatable.
I really don’t want to restart because that Ozumat battle already p***ed me off … any ideas? Can’t find a walkthrough for Halus Sunwatcher, also. *shrug*
For anyone who tries to complete the lorebooks achievement, here is the thread in the blizzard forums:
https://us.forums.blizzard.com/en/hearthstone/t/read-40-lorebooks/89333/21
The thread also contains “a pretty consistent way to do the Ozumat achievement”
It actually works, i have tried it myself
What annoys me most among the multitude of achievements is that I cannot tell which legendary abilities are missing. I have Halus (8/9), Stormcoil (5/6), and Faelin (3/5) and I really tried to keep track of all abilities, but there is no way to figure out the missing ones.
Maybe the abilities only count if they trigger at least once, and it is not enough just to choose them.
You have to trigger them correct.
thanks for that info!
I have all achievements complete for the book of heroes except the Restless Reader in which I am currently at 25/40 total. I am noticing there are some books that drop randomly from minions and there are some that I have found that drop from legendary minions as a rare drop. I can’t find any information of anyone who is tracking where each are found yet.
I have 15/40 for restless reader.
That achievement is ridiculous. Sometimes an end-of-turn trigger kills an opposing minion (e.g. finlays compass) and the book drops afterwards, just to vanish immediately without any chance to read it.
I can see how that is annoying. Each of the lore books have specific names so it is possible to track where each drops to try and get an overall list. Right now I don’t think there is enough interest to try and find them all. I just want to confirm somehow that they are all possible to get and it isn’t bugged.
The one example I have of this is whenever you are on challenge 3 facing Ol’ Rattleswipe he will eventually play a legendary minion called Pip. I waited until he played Pip before killing any other minion and killed Pip first before any other minion and upon dying he spawned a lorebook called First Mate’s Log which gives details of Pip’s interaction with Ol’ Rattleswipe in which he notices him talking about snake armies and a woman’s voice calling him to find some relics as to provide additional lore to the overall story. If there is anyone else trying to locate all of these lorebooks, this is a good one to try and go for if you are stuck trying to find more. I will try and experiment with other battles like this in an attempt to discover more lorebooks from other legendary minions for the other chapters. I encourage others to try and discover them as well.
Thanks for all the work.
The information for challenge 16 is not too helpful though.
It seems that the AI concedes around turn 10 or 11 if you have a lot of attack/health minion stats (preferably with taunt) on the board. That means that you should not choose the “build cannons” ability, because, you will have too little board space to make the AI concede.
So… Book of Faelin. Honestly feeling mixed about this usage of Team 5’s resources. What I can say is don’t do what I did and play this entire adventure in one sitting, blind. The story was enjoyable enough if average, but interspersing cutscenes during the fights really, really drags on especially when you lose – and against Ozumat and Queen Aszhara, you will lose often. The idea of lorebooks isn’t bad, but when you’re chugging through 17 chapters, some of which you’ll probably repeat, you’ll want to mash that End Turn button. Seeing a Lorebook crumble prematurely really only serves to annoy the player who’s already spent a good amount of time trying to survive Ozumat. I get that Ozumat is a character the team has consistently wanted to feature – but making his encounter this difficult was unhelpful.
As someone who played once and picked Finley as a partner, I’d add that Cousin Errgl’s encounter brings about more questions than answers. If Finley was picked up as an egg by Elise who taught him Common, how does that explain his parents? Why do murlocs have a summer school? Why aren’t there more British murlocs?
Might want to say focus on getting Queen Azshara to 50 health for the final battle, I had her at 55 and instead of attacking my 5/6 minion into her, I killed off the 5/10 enemy minion(Daithil?), and she killed me on the next turn.
