How to Be a True Pro Gamer™ – The Only Hearthstone Guide You’ll Ever Need

You might consider yourself a professional gamer, but are you a true Pro Gamer™? The recent Dr. Boom’s Inventions mini-set gave us the strongest card in the history of Hearthstone. Assuming, of course, that you have enough skill to play it.

After all, if you are a true Pro Gamer™, it’s a 2 mana 2/3 that always draws 2 cards. Always. Don’t let other, less skilled players fool you – after reading this guide, put this card into every single deck and show everyone who’s the real pro.

Firestone was kind enough to share some early statistics – below you can find data on how often each option is picked (which should make it easier for a Pro Gamer™ like you to adopt the right strategy).

How Does It Work

Before diving into the statistics, however, let me give you a quick explanation of how Pro Gamer™ works. The card is quite unique. You don’t often get this kind of deep and meaningful interaction with your opponent in Hearthstone. I even heard that some Magic players started coming back to the game just because of it. It’s more agency than an average player can handle, that’s why it’s only reserved for Pro Gamers™.

Mechanically, it’s similar to the series of “Suspicious” cards (such as Suspicious Alchemist) released during Year of the Hydra. However, instead of trying to pick the same thing as your opponent, you try to pick the opposite thing (Pro Gamer™ always picks the opposite).

After you play Pro Gamer™, the usual “Discover” screen pops up, but you always have the same three static choices – Rock, Paper, or Scissors. After you make your choice… nothing happens. At least not yet. But a Pro Gamer™ is patient.

Your opponent gets to pick at the start of their turn. After they do, both choices are revealed. The player who won draws 2 cards. If it’s a tie, nothing happens. But that bit of information was pretty useless, since as a Pro Gamer™ you will always win.

However, there’s a catch – if Pro Gamer™ dies after you make your pick, but before your opponent can make theirs, his effect no longer triggers. It’s a relatively rare situation overall, but a good example would be playing the minion into Explosive Runes. So keep your Pro Gamers™ safe.

Pro Gamer™ Stats By Rank

Below, you will find how often each option is picked at each rank:

Rock Paper Scissors
Bronze 33.10% 29.31% 37.59%
Silver 35.14% 33.98% 30.89%
Gold 32.37% 36.13% 31.50%
Platinum 30.05% 30.81% 39.14%
Diamond 31.79% 32.27% 35.93%
Legend 30.25% 33.97% 35.78%
Total 31.56% 32.69% 35.75%

Do keep in mind that the sample size at lower ranks is quite low (for example, for Bronze, it’s only ~300 choices in total). However, as a Pro Gamer™, you don’t need to worry about lower ranks.

The total sample size at the time of writing is Rock – 2020, Paper – 2092, and Scissors – 2288. You can full data here. It means that, as of right now, the Pro Gamer™ meta is skewed towards Scissors, and by quite a big margin. Logically, Rock might be your best option, but…

How To Be A Pro Gamer™

To be a true Pro Gamer™, you need more than statistics. You need to think five steps ahead of your opponent and believe in the heart of the cards.

As soon as the queue wheel stops spinning (for some reason it lands on a “worthy opponent” – that’s obviously not true because no one is worthy of playing against a Pro Gamer™ like you), you need to get into the mind of your potential victi… I mean the other player.

Look at their nickname. What would someone named “RagnaBros” pick? What is their history, their state of mind? Think about everything – their age, their job, what they might have had for breakfast. Every bit of information is crucial.

Before dropping the Pro Gamer™ and having to make the ultimate choice, play some extra mind games. Test them. Use the “Greetings” Emote and see if they reply. If they do – you already won. They walked straight into your trap. Now test every other Emote and see their response. If they squelch you, their mind is weak and you don’t need to worry. But if they play along with your charade, extract everything you can from their behavior.

Now analyze everything you have. Connect the dots. Weigh your every option. Enter your mind palace. Run millions of potential scenarios in your head. All of that in mere seconds. A Pro Gamer™’s brain is not just a brain, it’s a supercomputer.

And when it’s finally time, do it. Play the Pro Gamer™. Not like a regular player would. Do it like a Pro. Spin him around the battlefield and then drop him right in the center (so-called “360 No Scope” strategy). Then close your eyes. Pause. You don’t need to think anymore – you already know the answer. Boom. You just drew 2 cards. And trust me, they will taste sweeter than any other card you drew in your life.

Congratulations, you won Hearthstone.

But if you aren’t a true Pro Gamer™ yet, there’s another option. Just pick Rock. Rock always wins.

Lazy article. Failed to mention being a pro gamer and losing this dumb crap, and causing your opponent to overdraw. I did this off a discover of Pro Gamer with my excavate card. Mixing Pro Gamer and Excavate is very pro gamer.
