A big bunch of updates are on the way, and a lot of information about what’s to come with Hearthstone in this new “In the Works” feature from Blizzard! Four new Classic Cards are going to be released to replace what has been moved to the Hall of Fame. It looks like the traditional middle of the expansion nerfs aren’t going to happen because Blizzard is happy with the overall state of the meta. New players are now going to start at Rank 50 and have all the way to Rank 26 to themselves. Tournament Mode has sadly been delayed and is “on hold for the foreseeable future.” The Hallow’s End event is back again this year and there will be dual Class Arenas, along with facing off against the Headless Horseman in the Tavern Brawl. Finally, it looks like Paladin is getting another new hero with Sir Annoy-O. You’ll be able to purchase the new hero as a part of a “special deal.”
Quick Information
I would recommend reading the whole post as it is pretty interesting, but I’m going to break out some of the bigger topics:
- Blizzard is happy with the overall state of the meta.
- Giggling Inventor is being watched, there’s no plans for changes for now.
- They are having ongoing discussions about Wild, but nothing concrete.
- Four new cards are being added to the classic set (Icicle, Tome of Intellect, Call of the Void, and Pilfer).
- More cards are likely to go to the Hall of Fame in the future so they’ll be considering some more new cards in the future.
- New Players will start at rank 50 and play in this area of the ladder until they hit rank 25, where they will join the rest of the population!
- Tournament Mode has been delayed 🙁
- Fireside Gatherings are going to get some new stuff and will have a rotating monthly Fireside Brawl.
- The Welcome Bundle will include one of the six legendary dragons (Alexstrasza, Deathwing, Malygos, Nozdormu, Onyxia, or Ysera) from the Classic set rather than a random Class Legendary.
- If you’ve already purchased the Welcome Bundle, you’ll be able to purchase this one too.
- Hallow’s End event is coming back again!
- New Paladin Hero: Sir Annoy-O!
- This will be released when Hallow’s End starts (October 17th).
- It will be available for purchase as part of a “special deal.”
Original Post
Welcome to Hearthstone’s first In the Works update. Here we’re giving you a brief look at what’s coming in the next few months for Hearthstone—game updates and events, esports, and more!
There’s a lot to talk about, so read on to find out what’s in store.
Game Updates
The State of the Meta
We’ve seen the meta-game start to stabilize in the wake of The Boomsday Project’s release. Decks like Odd Warrior, Odd Paladin, Token Druid, Tempo Mage, Taunt Druid, Zoo Warlock, Quest Rogue, Secret Hunter, Even Paladin, Deathrattle Hunter, and Even Warlock, have all been top performers.
While those decks stand out from the pack slightly, there are effective decks from every class. Evolve Shaman and Combo Priest have both seen success, for example.
Overall we’re happy with the excellent diversity of decks we’re seeing at all levels of Ranked Play.
Cards to Watch
Giggling Inventor is hugely popular and shows up in a lot of decks. We intended for Giggling Inventor to be powerful because we’ve found that having powerful neutral Taunt minions tends to make games more interesting. We’ve seen that with cards like Sludge Belcher and Tar Creeper in the past. Cards that fulfill this role need to be strong to get that job done, but there’s a line where they might be too good.
We aren’t planning any changes to Giggling Inventor for now, but we’re keeping an eye on it in the meantime. We’d like to know what you think.
Wild Balance
There’s been an ongoing discussion within the team regarding how Wild should play. Right now, Wild feels somewhat like Standard but with an elevated power level and a vast library of cards. Should Wild live up to its name more, where we allow really crazy and powerful combos to happen, even in the early game? Generally, it’s harder for any one strategy to be dominant in Wild since everything is so powerful and everyone has access to so many tools, but do we want those strategies to exist? We know that there are players who would prefer to have a mode that offers that kind of gameplay.
There’s also the point to consider that the reason to have multiple modes in Hearthstone is for them to play differently, so there are downsides to trying to put the reins on Wild too much. But we also recognize that there might be decks like Naga Sea Witch that become too prevalent and simply aren’t fun to play against.
We’d love to hear your opinions about what you want from Wild. What do you think of how it is now, and what’s the role you see for it in the future of Hearthstone?
New Classic Cards
If you’ve been playing Hearthstone for a while, then you already know that with each new Hearthstone year, we’ve chosen certain cards to rotate out of the Standard format. Some of those cards have been part of the Classic format, which is usually an evergreen part of the Standard format.
A few of the cards that left Standard were Class cards, but we want each Class to have a roughly equal number of cards available in the Classic set. To accomplish that, we’re adding four all-new cards to fill the gap.
Here are the new Class cards being added to the Classic set. You’ll be able to craft them or open them in Classic card packs next month:
When designing these cards we are thinking about new players’ first experiences playing Hearthstone. They should be relatively straightforward while still creating some exciting moments. They also give players a chance to see and play with cards that they don’t own. At the same time it’s important that they aren’t so powerful that they limit future design or cause problems (since they’ll be in Standard for longer than 2 years.)
Looking forward, we expect more cards to join the Hall of Fame. There are also still some gaps in Classic where neutral Legendary cards joined the Hall of Fame, so we’re considering adding some new cards to the Classic set in the future.
New Player Experience Improvements
Even at Rank 25, competition in the Tavern can be fierce, especially if you’ve never played Hearthstone before. We’d like to ease new players into the fray a little more gently, so we’re taking some steps toward improving the new player experience. Here’s what newcomers to the Hearthstone tavern can expect to find:
New players will start at Rank 50. Ranks 50 through 26 will be for new players only, and just like ranks 25 through 20, you can’t lose Stars while ranking up. Once a player achieves Rank 25, they’ll never drop below that rank again. We hope this gives players who are new to Hearthstone a little more time to get used to the Tavern, and we’ll also be giving them a few free gifts along the way to help them get up to speed. If you’re an experienced player making an additional account, there will be an option to skip the New Player Experience (and some loot, so consider carefully!) so you can get back into the competition faster. There are a few more details that we’ll provide in the future, but that’s the gist of it!
In-game Tournaments Update
Earlier this year we talked about adding a new feature to Hearthstone that would make it easier to organize tournaments for Fireside Gatherings and private events. The team has been working on this feature for some time, and it was originally slated to arrive this year. Unfortunately, In-game Tournaments are now on hold, so we wanted to take this opportunity to explain why.
We have a lot of plans to improve many features of Hearthstone, including its social experience, and In-game Tournaments are an important part of that. Tournaments can serve many different audiences, but the implementation we’d arrived at catered to a very specific audience of players. Instead of broadening Hearthstone with an exciting new way to play, it felt “tacked on”, and wasn’t integrating well into the larger Hearthstone experience.
Ultimately, we were forced to conclude that we needed to think about how and where we want to improve Hearthstone’s overall social experience before we can tackle adding a satisfying and robust implementation of In-game Tournaments that all players can enjoy. As developers, sometimes we have to make the difficult decision to step away from a design that isn’t working. We no longer felt that the end result would deliver on everyone’s expectations or the high standards we have for Hearthstone.
As a result, while we want to revisit In-Game Tournaments at a later date, the feature is on hold for the foreseeable future.
Fireside Gatherings
If you’ve never attended a Fireside Gathering, or organized one of your own, you’re missing one of the most fun ways to enjoy Hearthstone with friends! They’re more fun than ever—including private events in your own home—so drop by the Fireside Gatherings site and check it out.
Innkeepers are soon going to have even more options to spice up their events. It was already possible to experience Fireside Brawls (Tavern Brawls that can only be experienced at Fireside Gatherings), and now they’ll have a whole menu of Brawls to choose from to offer their attendees. In addition to the rotating monthly Fireside Brawl, Innkeepers will be able to select one additional Fireside Brawl from a curated library of brawls that their patrons will have access to during their Fireside Gathering.
Esports
The 2018 HCT Fall Championship is coming mid-October! Watch it live on stream or live in-person at the Blizzard Arena in Los Angeles.
It’s going to be a thrilling event to witness, and if you can be there live, it gets even better! You’ll get to meet Hearthstone developers, enjoy pick-up tournaments on-site, snap up cool stuff like Hearthstone and Blizzard Arena merchandise and earn the Thrill of Victory card back just for attending!
You can get your tickets here. Get them fast before they sell out as seating is limited!
Welcome Bundle’s Roaring Return
Okay, it never left, but it IS getting a majestic make-over. It will still offer 10 Classic card packs at a very low price (great time to try to pick up those new Classic Class cards!), but instead of a random Class Legendary card, it will now include one of six Legendary dragons from the Classic set: Alexstrasza, Deathwing, Malygos, Nozdormu, Onyxia, or Ysera!
There’s even better news! What could be better than dragons, you ask? Even if you’ve purchased the Welcome Bundle before, you’ll be able to grab this one too!
Upcoming Game Events
Hallow’s End
The Headless Horseman returns for another spooktacular Hallow’s End event starting October 17! Just like last year, the Tavern will be decked out in horrific fashion, the dual Class Arena returns, and you’ll face the Headless Horseman in the Tavern Brawl. In the spirit of the season, we’re tossing a few more treats in the bag this year, and we’ll let you know all about them as the Headless Horseman’s return draws nigh.
Hallow’s End also marks the arrival of a friendly new Paladin Hero who will be available for purchase as a part of a special deal!
And that’s what’s In the Works for Hearthstone! Thanks for joining us, and we look forward to hearing what you think, so let us know on social media, or in the comments below.
State of the meta: it’s diverse, true, but Giggling and/or Quest Rogue are obnoxious. Giggling is quite better than Sludge Belcher, the latter can always be silenced, or wasting removal on the big Taunt doesn’t feel as bad as wasting removal on an Annoy-o-tron. We would all be fine with nerfing Giggling to 6 mana, that would also be a considerable nerf to Quest Rogue. And what’s worse is that Giggling is available in Arena, where it is basically the best card you can pick. Like seriously, some decks have started running Mossy Horror even when it’s highly anti-synergistic with them (Zoolock, Even Shaman…). What does that tell you?
Wild: just listen to the overall community more for this mode. Barnes and Juicy Psychmelon are a problem. Some rotated cards could be unnerfed (Raza?). It’s fine if it becomes a mode with huge power level, that’s what it will end up being sooner or later. What would be VERY interesting is a new mode with the latest 6 expansion in play (but no Classic cards available). Every time a new expansion releases, the last expansion rotates out, the new expansion rotates in. They could start that mode when the Year of the Raven ends (so standard has 4 expansions + Classic, the new mode has the last 6 expansions).
New Classic cards: they’re all trash. Especially annoying is the Mage epic which will occupy space in Classic packs like Mindgames or Shadowform. Also very lazy design. It would be better to get older cards that were approved by the community back into Standard. Evolve for Shaman. Dirty Rat should replace Molten Giant, etc.
Tournament Mode: bummer. This is the same company that gave us tournament mode in StarCraft II. I don’t believe they can’t give us a simple mode for Hearthstone. The “quality” excuse is just so bad…
New Welcome Bundle: sounds cool to get one of the Dragons. But I’m sorry for the newcomers who get Onyxia or Nozdormu. The class legendaries are all more or less useful, with the exception of Cenarius which has been quite bad for a long time now.
Hallow’s End event: this is a great event, especially the Dual-class Arena. Glad to see it back.
Ranks 50-25: good idea, there should be a mode already that limits the amount of legendaries or epics in a deck, so that newer players can play in more equal terms.
Giggling is so popular, they wont nerf it. Its a neutral card, so everyone can play it. It is truly maybe the strongest value card in Q-Rogue, but dont think only about this card or the quest itself. You have to think about Sonya maybe. But maybe about the questcondition too. Maybe playing 6 Minions or something. Mossy Horror is also a card, everyone can put in a deck, like Giggling too. So i dont see any reason to put the costs up to 6 or smth. Sonya making it a 1 mana card anyways.
The 4 new cards arent that good, indeed. Still happy to see new cards coming into the classic set without any expansion coming out.
State of the meta :
Mossy Horror is mostly played in Even Shaman and Zoolock to pass the Plague. In my opinion, the power level of Druid is more an issue than Quest Rogue. But overall, the meta is good. If you compare to old ones, it is without a doubt the most diverse and balanced meta in HS history.
The bad point : it is mostly the same meta as the previous one, and Doom’s day Project doesn’t bring funny and fresh decks to the competitive scene.
Wild :
Blizzard won’t make it too complicated as you submit. The game should be easy to understand for 2-3 hours-a-week players. 2 modes, standard and wild. One mode with some restriction rules (standard). It is already complicated enough.
New classic cards :
They are meant to be trash and easy to understand, so they are.
+1 for a way to disrupt combo decks in the Classic set. Not necessarily Dirty Rat, but a similar card.
Tournament Mode :
I understand designers point. A tournament mode would not fit the spirit of the tavern that Blizzard has pushed in the past.
Moreover, website like Battlefy have made so many improvments, that it seems unclear to me that people will use a Blizzard tournament mode and not the existing ones.
Especially since Blizzard playoffs are now organized on those kind of apps.
New Welcome :
Cenarius sees some plays in variants of Token Druid. Not sure that he sees less legend plays than Tyrion.
Do you guys know what you get from the Welcome Bundle if you already have all the legendary dragons mentioned??
Blizzard doesn’t say that you get a dragon among those you don’t have yet. So you just get a random one.
You might get a duplicate dragon even if you miss one.
400 dust
Wild: Every NON-Standard card is legal.
That way, two completely different sets of cards are available. To be honest, I’m not sure if that creates 2 different play experiences but it is HS we’re talking about, so how different can those 2 modes be?
Basic and classic cards are the core of classes identity, you should let them playable for Wild and Standard.
That would not be popular. Wild would only get new cards once a year in a massive dump.
“We added unplayable garbage to Classic to make up for the cards we removed”
Why even bother?
New players have some cards more to toy around with and it changes some random card generation slightly. Nobody forces you to craft those cards so why even bother complaining about it? Of course Blizzard will not exchange overpowered, design-limiting cards with other overpowered, design-limiting cards, duh.
When will the welcome bundle be available (again)?
Wild: We dont want JP and barnes to stay how they are. But be careful what you wish for wild, blizzard will do the opposite, they want wild to die
Barnes?
The only thing that i care about is the welcome bundle! I have never bought it before. If i buy it now, do i get a random class legendary and a dragon as well or no? are the dragon and random class legendary bundle seperated? I wouldn’t be fair for players that haven’t bought it because they can only get one
The bundle will change. Right now, you’ll get a random class legendary. In the future, you’ll get a random dragon from the ones shown.
No, there won’t be 2 different bundles available.
Ok! Thanks for the reply
What about quest rouge? That’s the archetype that’s been poisoning the meta game and blizzard isn’t going to do anything about it?
I think it doesnt need to be nerfed. I played it a lot myself. And there are really bad matchups too!
Its like i expected. There are a lot of Tier 1 Decks right now, so why nerf one, if you can choose another out of 10 tier 1 decks. The meta is shifting all day. One day you will hardly reach 30% winrate with QuestRogue. Another day you can go 10-0. In the end its like 53%-56% like HSReplays tells you. If you play another consistent deck, like OddRogue you can easy keep it up to 60%+ constantly!
So even this deck stays “broken” winrate wise, i dont want to play it!
Quest rouge is never a broken deck like Raza priest, but the problem with that deck is that a lot of the matchup results are already determined even before the start of the game. The fact that it’s almost unwinnable for any non Aggro archetypes limit your options on ladder. If you get a lot of quest rouge on ladder, you’re going to have to play aggro decks only otherwise you can’t climb the ladder playing any non aggro decks. It creates an unhealthy environment for ladder and that’s the reason why it should be nerfed.
Thats true indeed. But think about how fast the meta is switching. Like i said, one day you are facing alot aggro, another day you face control and win alot. But i also think that even a deck with a bad matchup against QRogue can beat it, if you play fast or Rogue is getting unlucky with draws. You know how this works: if you play Q-Rogue and face aggro, you switch to cotrol and than you face control when you started playing it. Some days are awkward, matchupwise. But i really understand your opinion. if you watch at giggling Inventor, its maybe the strongest card in Q-Rogue. But its a neutral card, played in almost every deck. So they wont nerf it. Maybe they can nerf Sonya, but i dont think the Quest itself. Maybe higher the condition a bit. Playing 6 Minions maybe.
Dude the only thing that’s keeping quest rouge from being the second Raza priest is the time it takes to complete the quest. Once the quest is complete, you play Valeera, either Zola/scale hide or Sonya with any charge minions would destroy any control type of decks. No deck has enough removal to compete with it’s value. I think maybe they should nerf the quest to limited amount of turns rather than the rest of the game. That would be a whole lot more fair to other control decks and it won’t destroy the quest rouge archetype at the same time.
This is a very interesting update. I hope they come up with some great n00b legendary’s to replace Syl and Rag. I can’t think of others that were rotated out.
You know what would make a great classic legendary:
dirty rat 2.0
This Paladin Skin is soooo ugly! First Skin I wont buy for money! (Ok maybe if its cheap *gg*)
Cool, a 4th Paladin hero skin. Just what the game needed.
Just what I thought. 😉
I understand what they’re saying about taunt minions, but when a card is in over 50% of all decks I think that’s a clear sign something needs to be done.
If quest rogue gets another nerf as a result of this decision, I’ll be salty.
I think they want to give more time to players to shake the meta before nerfing the card. In the past, Bonemare saw the same treatment, it was nerfed only after next expansion release.
If the game evolves in a more mid-range meta, with more decks snowballing, like the old Murloc Pala, then Giggling will become a mediocre choice.
Blizzard definitely wimping out on those new cards. No attempt to make them even slightly playable.
They don’t want to break the meta. If you read even a tiny bit of their explanation, they are meant for new players. Cards that randomly generate stuff can never be op and allow a great experience for new players. It is exactly what it needs to be.
I’d rather they had a tournament mode with limited execution that could be improved over time, than to simply wash their hands of it, it’s not hard to speculate corporate infiltration. To deal with an ever evolving third party companies, sites, apps, programs is abhorrent to say the least… the reasoning for a tournament mode? -and now they cave in.
Agree completely. Some kind of tournament mode would be better then none. Join a queue with 4 decks. Find an opponent, scrap 1 of thier decks. Play some hearthstone like we see on HTC streams. Even if there is no reward I think a lot of people would play that over the grind. It can’t be that hard to implement…. Very disappointing!
Maybe Tess will be finally good
That card alone won’t make thief rogue viable. A power gain maybe but not enough to put it on the map.
Its just a worst Hallucinate, won’t see play until that’s out of standard. Also, running both cards is pretty trashy.
Yes hallucinate is better. But a classic card will ensure the thief ability and archetype remains in the game indefinitely.
And yes you obviously wouldn’t run both.
You will run both if thief rogue receive a big boost with the last expansion of this year.
