It’s time! The new mode – Battlegrounds – went into early access last week, but it was only available to a relatively small group of people (BlizzCon ticket holders, players who pre-ordered new expansion and those lucky enough to get it through Twitch drops). But right now, it is available to everyone.
Battlegrounds is a new Hearthstone Auto Battler mode, which was announced at BlizzCon. 8 players fight against each other using Heroes we all know from Hearthstone or Warcraft’s lore, alternating between Tavern visits during which they buy more minions or upgrade the ones they have, and combat phase where they fight against each other.
If you want to learn more about the mode, here’s the list of our guides:
- Tips & Tricks For New Players – If you’re just starting, you might want to read our tips & tricks based on the experience we had so far with the game!
- Best Strategies / Compositions Guide – We go over a few most popular strategies, identify key cards and show which Heroes are the best for them.

Battlegrounds mode is free to play. It means that everyone can launch Hearthstone and enjoy it. The only caveat is that players who buy packs from the latest expansion (which, right now, is already Descent of Dragons) get certain bonuses. For 10 packs, you get access to more detailed stats (which aren’t available yet), for 20 you get to pick from 3 Heroes instead of 2 at the start of each game (which is the only real advantage), and for 30 you can use in-game emotes/stickers. Packs you buy with gold also count, so basically anyone who plays Hearthstone will have those unlocked as soon as the new set launches (however, right now the only way to do it is to pre-order Descent of Dragons).
There are also free launch Legendary quests, awarding 9 Year of the Dragon packs in total!

Do cards from defeated players go back to the pool?
Yes, they do.
Hmmm – maybe that explains why you can never find that third Cave Hydra (or whatever) when the Murloc players are wiped out; the minion pool is suddenly diluted so your end-game choices are mostly trash.
Yep, minions going back to pool can be a downside too – if a player who plays a completely different strategy gets kicked out, then the pool gets flooded with a bunch of useless cards 🙂
packs are welcome but this mode is garbage
unless you are a streamer and wanna grab some viewers
great poem.
