Update: The patch is now live on all platforms! Enjoy!
Blizzard just posted full patch notes for the 29.2.2 update. It’s a MASSIVE balance patch with changes for Standard, Wild, and Battlegrounds. It also contains some bug fixes, mostly for Battlegrounds.
When it comes to Constructed changes, the patch isn’t meant only as an answer to the current meta outliers, but also as a change in the general design direction. They think that the current power level of a 4-set meta (which should be at its lower) is too high. Because of that, they targeted some of the “meta-defining cards”, including OTK combos and powerful AoE effects that might make players feel like their decisions don’t matter. They also don’t think that it will be a “one-and-done” thing, but rather a goal they keep in mind when doing future updates. You can read more about their philosophy in the patch notes as well as in the patch teaser they made earlier this week.
The patch also contains a bunch of buffs to Splendiferous Whizbang deck lists (8 out of 11 decks were buffed). Hopefully, it makes the card good enough to enjoy on the ladder.
The patch launches later today (most likely at 10 AM PT / 19:00 CET, or an hour since this post).
Standard
Nerfs
- Reno, Lone Ranger – Costs 9 mana (previously 8 mana).
- Zilliax Deluxe 3000 – Virus Module is now 1/4, but loses Stealth (previously 1/3 with Stealth).
- Gaslight Gatekeeper – Costs 4 mana (previously 3 mana).
- Snake Oil (generated by Miracle Salesman and Snake Oil Seller) – Costs 1 mana (previously 0 mana).
- Wheel of DEATH!!! – Wheel counts down at the start of your turn (instead of the end of your turn). It essentially means that your opponent gets one more turn.
- Forge of Wills – Costs 4 mana (previously 3 mana).
- Imprisoned Horror – Is now 4/4 (previously 5/5).
- Timewinder Zarimi – Effect requires 8 other Dragons summoned (previously 5 Dragons).
- Threads of Despair – Costs 2 mana (previously 1 mana).
- Sickly Grimewalker – Is now a 4 mana 3/5 (previously 3 mana 2/4).
- Sanitize – Costs 6 mana, Forge gains 4 Armor (previously 5 mana, Forge gained 3 Armor).
- Trial by Fire – Costs 7 mana (previously 6 mana).
- Boomboss Tho'grun – T.N.T.’s get shuffled into your opponent’s deck (instead of your deck).
- Flash of Lightning – Costs 3 mana (previously 2 mana).
- Crash of Thunder – Costs 6 mana (previously 5 mana).
- Jungle Gym – Has 2 Durability (previously 3 Durability).
Buffs
- All Showdown in the Badlands Highlander Cards (including Reno, Lone Ranger) – They now check whether the deck had duplicates at the start of the game (instead of the current state). It means that they can’t be countered by Plagues etc. but also can’t be played in decks with duplicates. Honestly, I feel a bit mixed about classifying it strictly as a buff, because it’s both a buff and a nerf at the same time.
- Manufacturing Error – Costs 5 mana (previously 6 mana).
- Sunset Volley – Costs 9 mana (previously 10 mana). While the card itself got buffed, this is actually a nerf for the Chaotic Tendril builds.
- Mes'Adune the Fractured – Costs 5 mana (previously 6 mana).
- Woodland Wonders – Summons 2/5’s (previously 1/5’s).
- Zok Fogsnout – Costs 6 mana (previously 7 mana).
- Chia Drake – Is now a 3/5 (previously 2/4).
- Hagatha the Fabled – Is now a 4 mana 4/3 (previously 5 mana 4/4).
- Aftershocks – Costs 4 mana, gets discounted by 1 if you played a spell last turn (previously 5 mana, 2 mana discount).
- Botface – Is now a 4/12 (previously 3/9).
- Toyrannosaurus – Is now a 7/7 and deals 7 damage on Deathrattle (previously 7/6, dealt 5 damage).
- Shoplifter Goldbeard – Costs 5 mana (previously 6 mana).
- The Crystal Cove – Sets minion stats to 5/5 (previously 4/4).
- Crane Game – Costs 8 mana (previously 9 mana).
- Fly Off the Shelves – Costs 3 mana (previously 4 mana).
- Papercraft Angel – Is now a 2 mana 2/3 (previously 3 mana 2/5).
- Treasure Distributor – Also buffs himself (previously only buffed summoned Pirates).
- Splendiferous Whizbang – 8 out of 11 decks got buffed. We’ll update our post with all Whizbang deck lists once we find out what those buffs are.
Wild
Nerfs
- Time Warp (Open the Waygate‘s reward) – You can only take the extra turn once per game (previously unlimited).
- Floop's Glorious Gloop – Dying minions refresh Mana Crystals (previously gained Mana Crystals).
- Snowfall Graveyard – Costs 5 mana (previously 3 mana).
The patch also changes over 80 Battlegrounds cards… I won’t list them all here because it would take AGES.

Patch 29.2.2, launching later today, contains big updates to Hearthstone and Battlegrounds.
Hearthstone Updates
Dev Comment: This patch is a little different than our usual balance patches—it’s more about the general design direction of the game than it is about particular power outliers (though we hit a few of those, too). Right now, there are a lot of cards that can remove player agency and raise the power level of the game beyond where we want for a 4-set meta. We’re looking at a variety of these meta-defining cards in this patch, from OTK-style cards to powerful AoE effects that make it feel like your minions don’t matter.
There will always be cool, dreamy cards in Hearthstone—that’s part of what makes Hearthstone Hearthstone—but these types of cards can sometimes be disproportionately more fun to play with than play against. We don’t want these kinds of cards to make up the most powerful and prevalent archetypes in the game, especially if they create metagames where player agency feels low.
There are a few categories of changes in this patch. The first is cards that can end the game quickly when played, and which warp the entire game around whether you get to play them at the right time. No Duplicate cards are also a subsection of this. Being able to draw your deck to avoid the downside of these cards is an interesting deck construction challenge, but it has in large part devolved into turbo-draw decks that tend to be less interactive and not in the spirit of these cards.
The second category is powerful, uncapped board clears. We’ve made and will continue to make AoE effects, but these particular instances are too efficient at clearing the board, making minion-based strategies feel helpless.
The third category is cards that are just a little too strong in their decks and should be toned down a bit. Similarly, our Wild changes are to some clear power and play experience outliers in that Mode.
Finally, we’re making some buffs, too! A lot of the changes we’re making in this patch are to weaken new cards or strategies that came from Whizbang’s Workshop, but we don’t want to just go back to the meta we had before the expansion. So we’ve identified some underperforming Whizbang’s Workshop archetypes that we think better align with our overall goals for the format and infusing them with a bit more power to give them another chance.
This probably won’t be a one-and-done fix. We’re going to keep an eye on the game after these changes go live and continue to push towards a game that aligns with our design philosophy. To read more about this general philosophy, check out our Developer Insights post on the topic from earlier this week.

Battlegrounds Updates
Dev Comment: Well met! We’re so pleased that players have been enjoying the new Battlegrounds update as well as the new Duos mode! Overall, we are pretty happy with how both game modes are shaping up, but we wanted to help out some underperforming strategies. We went for a very wide approach this patch with a lot of smaller changes to smooth out the meta. We’ve also hit a few notable outliers, such as Greymane’s Champion, Rylak Metalhead, Gem Smuggler, Iridescent Skyblazer, and Orc-estra Conductor, to give other cards more room to shine. We’ll continue to monitor the game after these changes and make more adjustments as necessary. We hope you all have fun in the Tavern!

- [Battlegrounds] Fixed a bug where using Suspicious Stimulant on a minion caused errors with Jandice Barov’s Hero Power.
- [Battlegrounds] Fixed a bug where Felboar would consume a minion in the Tavern before the Tavern Spell takes effect.
- [Battlegrounds] Fixed a bug where Magnetized enchantments on a Magnetic minion wouldn’t carry over if the minion was tripled.
- [Battlegrounds] Sped up Mirror Monster’s visual effect.
- [Achievements] Fixed a bug where Top Teamwork progressed based on solo games as well.
- [Achievements] Fixed a bug where Floop de Loop progressed even when you weren’t the one playing with Floop.
So the nerfs have felt necessary, not helped by the fact that laddering this week felt intensely painful. The sheer range of removals and wipes that Death Knight has at any point means that my Monday weeklies-clearing experience has been almost nothing but slow, grindy, DK mirror matches over and over. The hit to Grimewalker and making Plagues less viable makes sense. The hit to Warrior feels hurtful but probably justified, as much as praying for Brann to drop doesn’t feel as consistent without Dredge in the format. Dirty Rat is still run very frequently so the moment Brann or Boomboss gets yanked out, there goes your game plan.
But ouch, that indirect Sif nerf. I don’t see Rainbow Mage recovering from this.
Yikes. I can tell the meta will be dominated by Highlander Warrior and whatever someone comes up with that can hard-counter it.
Omfg they actually went ahead and killed quest mage for good. I can’t believe it. And for what reason? It hasn’t been meta ever since the grey sage parrot nerf? Recently it seems like blizzard just keeps outdoing themselves with every patch but for the worse.
Mage got a lot of tools to recast spells in Whizbang, it’s a feeling nerf for sure though. It just feels bad when your opponent finishes the quest and then you never get another turn.
The deck’s been competitive in Wild for a bit now. Rewind and Rommath made for infinite Time Warp and Ice Block loops. Good riddance.
I am aware of the rommath, it has been used in the deck ever since grey sage parrot got nerfed but as far as i know quest mage has never been like a tier 1 deck since then. I have played the deck on and off myself couple of times since then and at no point it felt nowhere near the power level of, say, any rogue deck right now or any powerful aggro deck like shadow priest, even shaman etc. I do agree that rewind being able to discover the quest reward itself was quite BS but that could just have been addressed with a nerf to rewind.
buffed Treasure Distributor looks quite imba at first glance
Agreed
I expect that Pirate Rogue will be the new tempo deck that everyone bitches about next in Wild.
Let’s see what this does for the meta. The best deck atm Spell Token Hunter only got a small nerf so I suspect it will remain on top. Brann also got better.
None of the buffs will impact play at all. The extreme boredom will continue.
