Mulligans
I’m Tower607 and this is my take at an Open the Waygate deck. There are two basic deck builds that have been popularized for completing the new Un’Goro Mage Quest. The Archmage Antonidas version which features and a steady stream of Sorcerer's Apprentice discounted Fireballs to kill your opponent and the “Giant” version featuring Arcane Giant & Molten Giant. My deck is of the Giant variety but has a new twist of adding in The Curator
Completing the Quest
In order to Open the Waygate you have to play 6 spells that didn’t originate in your deck. Here’s how we accomplish it:
- Mukla, Tyrant of the Vale – Mukla is a great addition to any quest mage deck. He not only gives us a body on the board but also 2 banana spells to help complete the quest.
- Mana Bind – Free spell from our opponent! It’s important to think about what deck you’re playing against and when to play this to maximize your chance of getting a good spell. For example, play it on Turn 5 against a Paladin since they usual have a Spikeridge Steed on Turn 6.
- Primordial Glyph – This card is an allstar. Board clears, and secrets are your main targets. Burn isn’t a top choice unless you’re looking to clear a specific threat. If you can Glyph into Glyph even better!
- Babbling Book – You want to cast a spell? I want to cast a spell.
- The Coin – One of the few decks where playing second is a big time advantage.
Notable Spell Generating Card Exclusions
- Cabalist's Tome – I found this card to be too slow and clunky. I think Mukla, Tyrant of the Vale is a much better inclusion.
- Kabal Courier I went back and forth between this and Mana Bind. You could definitely switch it in for either Mana Bind or maybe even Medivh's Valet.
- Only one copy of Babbling Book. Im not crazy about this card. You could add a second book in place of a Mana Bind if you like it.
- If you’re dead set on adding more spell generating cards to help finish the quest, I think Medivh's Valet and Ice Barrier are the first two cards I would replace.
- Burgly Bully I like this card. I’ll have to test it out a little bit and see where I can fit it into the deck.
The Name of the Game is Card Draw
In order to complete the quest, open the way gate, and defeat your opponent, it’s often necessary to draw through your entire deck. There are lots of ways to accomplish this:
- Arcanologist Pulls one of the 5 spells we have in the deck.
- Bloodmage Thalnos Card draw with spell damage. Since we don’t really need the spell damage for anything other than Blizzard, Loot Hoarder is a decent substitute in this spot.
- Novice Engineer Draws a card that you can play on the spot.
- Arcane Intellect
This is the big difference between my build and the other Open the Waygate quest decks I’ve seen. I think the Curator is a fantastic addition to the deck. It helps to draw through the deck by targeting Alexstrasza, Mukla, Tyrant of the Vale, and Ironbeak Owl. It’s tough to replace, but If you don’t have the Karazhan adventure you could go with a Coldlight Oracle.
surviving
In addition the drawing through your deck as fast as possible, the other main goal is to stay alive!
- Doomsayer incredibly important in the early game when you’re facing an aggro deck.
- Blizzard and Frost Nova can be played with the before mentioned Doomsayer for an added bonus.
- Ice Block and Ice Barrier Life saving spells.
- Ironbeak Owl – I thought this was a good addition to the deck. Its one mana chapter than Polymorph and gives you a body on the board. It’s cheap enough that it can be played when you “Open the Waygate” to remove a pesky taunt at the end of the game too if needed.
- I didn’t include Frostbolt. It’s a great card and I wouldn’t be mad if you added it in place of one of the cards I picked for my deck.
OPENING THE WAYGATE
Combo decks like this can be a little inconsistent and tough to pull off, but when you do succeed, its incredibly satisfying. After playing 6 spells that didn’t originate in your hand, you get Time Warp, which gives you an extra turn. In order to take advantage of this you need a hand full of Giants ( Arcane Giant& Molten Giant ) and Alexstrasza.
- First step is to play your giants. If your about to pull of the quest, you’re probably late in the game or maybe your opponent just popped your Ice Block at one health. You should be able to play Arcane Giant and Molten Giant for zero mana.
- Play Time Warp
- Alexstrasza your opponent down to 15 health and finish them off with your giants. It’s a simple game.
