Massive s/o to Mizore for making this deck.
Been climbing with this deck around rank 10 and it’s yielded some interesting results. As with regular Kingsbane , against an aggro deck or high tempo deck it’s quite hard to establish the right conditions. However, this deck has been 1000x more fun to climb with than Kingsbane Rogue (both wild and standard). The ideal use of Pick Pocket would be to drop it on turn 8 or turn 10 with few cards in hand, but we don’t live in an ideal world so don’t be afraid to drop it for two or three uses. The primary use for what you grab from Hallucination, Blink Fox and Pick Pocket is to increase the durability of your Spectral Cutlass, but don’t be afraid to use these stolen cards without your weapon up*. Fortunately, the Frozen Throne cards provided by The Lich King count as a separate class so whatever you play from him will be replayed by Tess Greymane. Make sure not to use any cards you don’t want to be replayed like Doom Pact, or ANY weapons such as Woodcutter's Axe and Eaglehorn Bow. In matchups against other Rogues, you’re obviously at a massive disadvantage since Spectral Cutlass isn’t buffed by any cards you play from your thief cards and Tess Greymane replays nothing. That’s why The Lich King comes in clutch here. If I had him I’d run Arfus. Also, I’ve tested on someone else’s account and Lilian Voss is an amazing card to run in this deck. I’ve also tried with Face Collector and it’s alright so I wouldn’t recommend it unless you’re looking for extra fun.
Some interesting things that have happened include building up a golden Cutlass to 8/8, stealing Lyra the Sunshard, Free From Amber, and two copies of Shadowform from a Priest and using the upgraded HP to blast them down.
Another game I stole a Doomhammer from a Shaman and, since I already had Valeera the Hollow up, I doubled up on both copies of Deadly Poison for 20 damage.
*keep in mind even though this deck focuses on Spectral Cutlass, you can absolutely forego the card when the opportunity arises and it seems more fun or more likely to win you the game, as is evident above with the Doomhammer situation I described. If you somehow lose your weapon (as a result of weapon removal or overdrawing, for instance), you still have a chance to win the game (as opposed to Kingsbane where your game’s pretty much over).
Replacement for Captain Greenskin?
If you’ve got any of the other legendaries I mentioned, such as Lich King, Lilian Voss, Arfus or Face Collector, then sub those in for Greenskin. If not, then sub in Preparation if you’ve got that, and if you don’t, maybe a Shadowstep, or whatever you think can fit into the deck.
i totally agree that cutlass is an amazing card, just wondering if you already tried raven caller. those 1 drops from another class really helps against rogue match ups as it can extend the cutlass durability for 1 mana only.
Never thought about Ravencaller, but it could potentially be really helpful. Mizore and I’ll test it out as soon as we can. Thanks
We tried Ravencaller over a few days and it didn’t work out at all. It seems to be too inconsistent, even for this deck.
Spectral Cutlass is an interesting weapon. It is overcosted for sure, but it has Lifesteal – something ALL Rogues always wanted their weapons to have. It can also get extra durability, which is great when you want to take your matches longer. It is simply outclassed by Kingsbane because weapon removal simply destroy Cutlass. But once Cubelock and Kingsbane rotate out, Cutlass could shine (if they don’t print another Lifesteal weapon before Mammoth rotates). This deck looks like a normal thief Rogue deck, which is currently a meme. Can definitely have fun with it, but I’m hoping for a more competitive Cutlass in the future! 🙂
Surprisingly I’ve had a relatively decent winrate in ranked with it. Currently sitting with a 53% winrate with this deck. The good thing about this deck is you don’t necessarily have to rely on Spectral Cutlass to win you the game, unlike a Kingsbane deck where if that card gets milled, you’re done. I seem to be extremely lucky and consistent with my rng pulls from thief cards so maybe that’s why I’ve been doing so good, but just keep in mind that if you lose Cutlass, you’re not out the game. Like you said, hopefully we’ll see a competitive Cutlass deck bc it’ll definitely be a lot of fun.
