Mulligans
Control Mulligans
With control, you can keep higher-costed cards if you have a decent curve. Always keep Jan'alai against control to finish games quicker, as well as cards that cycle.
There are many Odd Mage decks with questionable card choices. This list is tweaked to remove poorly-performing cards, and replaces them with higher-powered card.
Cards removed: Arcane Missiles, Cinderstorm, Nightblade, Clockwork Automaton.
Cards added: Mirror Image, Masked Contender, Cobalt Scalebane.
Arcane Missiles and Cinderstorm are useful against Odd Paladin and almost nothing else. It’s better to use cards that are useful in all matchups instead of cards that narrowly increase performance against naturally poor matchups. For that reason, Mirror Image replaces the 1 spot to synergize with Fungalmancer and Cobalt Scalebane, and Masked Contender is added to thin your deck and draw you Jan’alai faster. Clockwork Automaton’s almost identical effect to Daring Fire Eater doesn’t justify it’s 4 higher mana cost, especially considering its poor statline, and Nightblade’s weak battlecry similarly does not justify the tempo loss of playing a 4/4 for 5 mana. Instead, Cobalt Scalebane is a great turn 5 play, and is likely to have an immediate impact on the board due to the inclusion of more minions/spells that summon minions in this list.
One other note: Black Cat is a good card because it’s a 3 mana 3/3 that cycles a card. The +1 spell damage is a nice bonus, and can synergize with your Explosive Runes, but losing 1 extra ping value from Arcane Missiles and Cinderstorm is negligible.
