It took me a good deal of time to find a version of mage I could actually beat The Lich King With. At first, I was tinkering around with a tempo secrets deck with the Kabal Lackey and Counterspell combo (which denies The Lich King’s first spell, keeping your life total above one). Not only was this strategy completely ineffective most of the time (as I restarted countless times looking for those two cards in the mulligan), it also was not good enough once I actually got the combo off. I still had to win the game against The Lich King and had crappy cards like Lackey and Counterspell in my deck. I found that a deck abusing healing effects was the way to go and Frost Lich Jaina provides a way to play a proactive game, while also healing you.
Mulligans
The most important card you are looking for in your mulligan is Mistress of Mixtures. I restarted multiple times looking for this specific card. Very frequently, he will set your life total to one and coin out another one drop, which requires an immediate response. Mistress gets the ball rolling, and you’re really looking to follow her up with Arcanologist or Mad Scientist to pull Ice Barrier or Ice Block out of your deck. You want to try and chain these early plays into cheap elementals if you can, but Mistress, Arcanologist, and Mad Scientist are the important keeps here.
The Lich King – Elemental Mage Play Strategy
In this match, you are looking to curve Mistress into mid-game elementals. The trick here is to build up a big enough board presence by turn 7 that you can deal with his army of 2/6s without taking too much damage. Make no mistake, this mage challenge is very difficult and it will take multiple attempts to beat most likely, but there is a general play strategy to follow which will allow you to win, when drawing decently.
The general flow of play when you are navigating this match is a turn one Mistress, followed up by a two drop or a ping on his Glacial Shard if he plays it. After that, it’s all about deploying Earthen Ring Farseer, Refreshment Vendor, or Antique Healbot in between playing your elementals. After the mid-game, the best card you can deploy is Frost Lich Jaina as the deck is built around her passive ability to gain life. If you have a sizable board of elementals by the time you deploy her, it should be pretty easy for you to win the game.
Baron Geddon may seem like a strange addition, but with Frost Lich Jaina out, each instance of two damage he deals will heal you for two. This decklist is proven to beat the challenge, it is just a matter of aggressive mulligans and drawing well.
Bloody hell I did it, took a couple of tries and was supper clutch at the end, was literally saved by ice block. We were both out of cards. And he had just used anti magic to power his minions. This deck especially worked by managing to survive till round 9 so I could use frost litch. I swapped out a couple of cards so I will post the deck I used when I get home. 4 classes down 5 to go.
Here we go, the code is:

And the cards used are:
1x (1) Kabal Lackey
2x (1) Mistress of Mixtures
2x (2) Arcanologist
1x (2) Friendly Bartender
1x (2) Gadgetzan Socialite
1x (2) Ice Walker
1x (2) Mad Scientist
1x (2) Pyros
2x (3) Arcane Intellect
2x (3) Ice Barrier
1x (3) Ice Block
1x (3) Thunder Lizard
1x (4) Steam Surger
1x (4) Tol’vir Stoneshaper
1x (4) Tournament Medic
2x (4) Water Elemental
1x (5) Cult Apothecary
1x (5) Second-Rate Bruiser
2x (5) Servant of Kalimos
1x (6) Ancient of Blossoms
2x (6) Kabal Crystal Runner
1x (6) Priestess of Elune
1x (9) Frost Lich Jaina
Beautiful deck. I won easily after mulliganing twice. The elemental/Geddon combo is super sweet.
Successfully beat it 3 times in a row (counting only times with good mulligan) with this : http://www.hearthstonetopdecks.com/decks/mage-lich-king-kelthuzad-easy-win/
Really good deck! I lost my first only because Kel’Thuzad was my last card.
Got him down to 3 HP. The stars didn’t quite align.
I had to replace several cards as I don’t have dust to make the missing ones.
Still going molten lord and mirror though having to wipe on turn 7 with acolyte to clear his frostmourne stunts the progress. Luckily I got my vicious fledgling. if i had gotten my windfury one round earlier I would’ve won or +3 dmg a round early. I did pop my Lich Jaina at round 9 too and struggled with freeze and re spawning.
Yeah as I wrote this I finally killed him, didnt wipe the board with acolyte, just kept my molten lord s and got lucky on my vicious fledgling.
I got luck with this one http://www.hearthstonetopdecks.com/decks/the-lich-king-boss-adventure-%E2%80%A2-mage-counterspell-molten-giant-hybrid/
This is a bad deck :v
I did it.
Swap servant of kalimos with counterspells. You have to counter his blizzard and/or +2/+2 buff.
Swap fireplume phoneix with doomsayers. You have to play doomsayer on t6.
Did it in like 8 times. i replaced the arcanologist with doomsayers to play on turn 7 to denie the frostmourne fase. The time i had succes i could clear his entire board on turn 7 and play the doomsayer, so he didnt had a board at all. This requires some luck. Play some nice elementals or secrets on turn 8 and jaina on turn 9. From now on it will be easy. Hope you guys have some luck.
This is not a deck guide for this duel, there’s a better way out there, just gotta think hard… this deck can’t deal with a board, doesn’t even run a single doomsayer… no logic here…
Impossible to win. 30+ tried at least. He plays Anti-Magic Shell and i am fucked. There is nothing to do. I think i will just need ultra mega luck which i don’t have. Pala new hero will be my dream only 🙁
This doesnt work. ive played 100 games. if you dont get mistress of the mix in the opening hand, your dead. he plays the spell and brings you to 1 and casts a 1 cost creature, every time. where is this RNG that the developers say that there is in the game. if you have to have a set opening hand to beat it, then that is no RNG.
Nice deck you’ll eventually outvalue the lich king. I beat him at first try with this one.
Immpossible with this deck.
Not possible unless all the stars align… :$
Keep making it past frostmourne stage but byy that point i havent been able to play lich jaina due to health isseus, my secrets are up and my mionion that give health as well. Each time i think i am getting there he uses that buff spel on hi sminions
I managed to go to turn 9, have 2 elementals + frost lich Jaina, and he has only creature. Then he bonemares, bonemares again, then +2+2 and shroud on his minions, just NOTHING you can do vs an army of 11/11 taunts
What could be a budget replacement for baron geddon? blaze caller?
I don’t have Pyros – is this still viable?
I don’t think Pyros is going to make or break this deck. You could probably go with a second Antique Healbot or another Elemental.
Thanks – wish me luck, it’s my last one to unlock the new hero!
how did you win with paladin?
This is just moronic – it’s ridiculously hard compared to the others. I had the perfect draw, fully healed with jaina + geddon and he still over ran me 🙁
Try this deck;
http://www.hearthstonetopdecks.com/decks/the-lich-king-boss-adventure-cheap-mage-murloc-deck/
It worked very well for me. LK was down after less than 8 tries. No need for all those fancy legendaries and the only legendary in this deck can be replaced by any other viable card that goes with this deck.
doomsayer or counterspell can work
