Introduction to Deathrattle Hunter
Deathrattle Hunter, starring Deathstalker Rexxar, the new Hunter Death Knight Hero evolves out of an Un’Goro iteration of one of the most classic Hearthstone archetypes– the Midrange Hunter. The addition of the new Death Knight provides a punch that can mitigate one of Hunter’s typical weaknesses: late game. Through his Build-a-Beast Hero Power, Deathstalker Rexxar can generate potentially huge amounts of value by allowing the player to consecutively Discover two Beast cards and, as Ben Brode so memorably described, “Stitch them together!” to form a single playable Zombeast with the combined abilities (and mana cost!) of the respective choices, and add it to your hand.

Update – Deathrattle Hunter October 2017
This version is a bit slower than the more popular Hybrid Hunter that got very popular right after the balance patch was released. It’s a viable deck, but Hunter struggles against the top decks in the meta currently.
Deathrattle Hunter Mulligan Strategy & Guide
In general, with this deck mulligan is similar regardless of opponent. You want early Beasts to develop on which you can land your conditional buffs, attempting to snowball Beast synergy on your opponent.
Higher Priority (Keep every time)
- Alleycat – This deck’s best 1 drop as it allows you to have a high likelihood of sticking at least one beast that you can Razormaw.
- Crackling Razormaw – If you can get the buff, you begin your snowball here, playing an average of 4/3 stats for 2 mana early.
- Kindly Grandmother – Keep if on Coin, consider keeping on the play. This sticky minion is already 4/3 stats for 2, and it can be hard to remove, allowing you to have buff targets moving forward.
Lower Priority (Keep only if certain conditions are met)
- Animal Companion – This is a very powerful card, and high tempo. You will want to play either this or Bow on Turn 3 every time. You could even consider keeping it always, but definitely keep it if you have 1 or 2 drops already.
- Eaglehorn Bow – One of the highest Winrate-if-Played cards in the deck, you often want this card to keep your opponent’s board clean so you can develop in peace. Especially keep against Druid and Paladin and Warrior, anyone who also wants to fight hard for the early board.
- Houndmaster – If you can play a perfect curve and have a Beast to land its effect on, Houndmaster’s 6/5 stats (plus Taunt!) for 4 is a killer. Keep this card if you have a perfect hand already and are confident that you can curve into it on Turn 3 or 4.
- Deadly Shot – If you are worried about an Innervated Bittertide Hydra, or huge early taunt, you could consider keeping this removal, but it’s questionable and reactive. Mostly you’re going to want to develop.
Deathrattle Hunter Play Strategy
Our goal with Midrange Hunter decks most of the time is to develop a board early, capitalize on our Beast synergies to buff our boards, stick more minions through Deathrattles, and snowball the tempo. We play aggressively, but not all out for The Face, hoping to maximize board pressure and accrue additional damage across future turns through efficient value trades and using Weapons and Spells to clear minions.
Death Knight Hunter adds to this straightforward strategy a new option for Hunter players, generating late game value. A traditional problem for Midrange Hunter would be hitting turn 7-8 with the opponent being able to address our threats, clear our board, and then take control of the game. But now, with the powerful army of Zombeasts, Deathstalker Rexxar can continue the fight deep into a Control matchup, effectively drawing 2 cards per turn, one of which is likely to be apt for whatever situation we find ourselves in.
And don’t forget that casting the Death Knight has two additional effects: adding 5 armor (usually unimportant in these matchups) and casting an on-demand Explosive Trap across our opponent’s board (which can be very important). If you have it in hand, you can plan your trades accordingly and make solid use out of the Death Knight’s efficiently costed AOE, clearing things up to switch into the value game.
Note, however, that when we go in to Death Knight mode, we lose a very important part of Hunter’s identity, with the disappearance of Steady Shot. When Deathstalker comes into play, we need to significantly shift gameplans to a value-centric, fully board oriented strategy, as our burn potential has dropped to only Kill Commands. This Death Knight, like Gul’Dan and unlike Jaina, is a drastic shift in Hero identity and requires an according shift in playstyle and gameplan.
Vs Aggro
Similarly to Murloc Paladin and Pirate Warrior –and in a different way Token Shaman or Druid– Midrange Hunter decks, including Death Knight decks, need to have a board in order to play efficiently, reliant as they are on minion Tribal synergy. Consider the difference between a Houndmaster that lands on a Beast or does not. A vanilla 4/3 for 4 mana? Or 6/5 of stats plus Taunt for 4 mana? The differences are incredible.
So, vs Aggro decks, we must must must stick Beasts, whether through spamming low cost development, or deploying Deathrattles that can’t be cleared on the next turn. Eaglehorn Bow is a very key card in these sorts of situations, and should but won’t go without saying: should never hit a face (unless counting for immanent lethal). Wipe up Southsea Captains and Murloc Warleaders and Vicious Fledglings, and protect your own board. Even if you have to spend Kill Commands on minions for 3-health early: if doing so helps stick boards to buff do it!
If we still have a board by Turns 4 and 5 and can start Houndmaster-ing things and playing Corpse Widows into Highmanes, we will likely overwhelm other aggressive decks, and Deathstalker can just chill, saving his energy for the next Priest game.
Vs Control
Control matchups rely heavily on the balancing act between Pressure & Conservation. As an aggressive-midrange-synergetic-tempo deck, we want to use our ability to curve out into efficient stats deployment on turns 1-6 to overwhelm BUT we want to beware of over-extension. If we play an unnecessary number of cards into a Dragonfire Potion or Frost Nova/Doomsayer type situation, we can find ourselves with insufficient reload and let the game swing. Against control, what we want to prevent are midgame swings. If they’re going to clear our board, we want to be sure to preserve cards in hand to reload the board afterward and go right back to our pressure plan. If they are clearing, they aren’t developing, and we just want to right back to pushing.
But sometimes this route cannot be sustained, and this is where our Death Knight can come to shine. Now, instead of drying up and being unable to draw reload, the Hunter can drop a Deathstalker Rexxar, and get 2 cards per turn, 1 of which is a supercharged Beast-amalgam of active effects. You want some charge? Grab a Stonetusk Boar. Need health? Take a Bloodworm. Taunt? We got you, Stegodon. Whatever the game state calls for, can (RNGesus be praised) be discovered and stitched together into an appropriate Zombeast.
Zombeast Creation
An art that itself could constitute and entire guide, but I will only be able to go into a few basic tips:
- Pay attention to the combined cost of the Zombeast. Do not allow yourself to be blinded by the overwhelming power of that Knuckles/Bloodworm, or Highmane/Fledgling. Consider: When will I be able to play this card I am creating? Oftentimes you will need to create and play your Zombeast on the same turn, and greed must often be sacrificed for tempo. 10 mana minions are hard to play, and a huge punish if efficiently removed.
- To the best of your ability, consider your opponent’s deck’s strengths and weaknesses. By the time you are stitching up Zombeasts, you are highly likely to know what you’re playing against in some detail. Is my opponent flabbergasted by 4 attack minions? Will they have a hard time removing one large threat? Would it be better to go wide and make a small minion so I can play this other card I drew in addition? Do they want to play their own big threat next turn and Poisonous will throw off their plans? Think about what Zombeast would make the opponent’s next play as awkward as possible.
- Ask yourself if you even want to make a Zombeast here, or if your mana would be better spent playing natural cards from hand. Don’t get blinded by the highroll excitement of landing the perfect Beast, sometimes the simple play is the best play, and you can always take a shot at the dream next turn. Consider the odds of rolling perfection against the effectiveness of the basic play.
Deathrattle Hunter Card Substitutions
One of the advantages of Hunter, especially for new or free to play players, is the relatively low barrier to entry on card cost. This deck already contains only one Legendary card, Deathstalker Rexxar, which is by definition irreplaceable in a Death Knight Hunter deck, but there are many Midrange builds that don’t include him. You really don’t want to play Hunter without the ever-broken Savannah Highmane, so let’s call that a must include as well.
- Rat Pack – If you like, you can drop your curve and increase further the likelihood of landing a 1 drop by inserting a Fiery Bat here, or preserve the curve with the interesting new Beast card Bearshark, the advantage of not being targetable by Spells and Hero Powers does not prevent Bearshark from being buffable by your other minions making it even more appealing, though less sticky than Rat Pack.
- Corpse Widow – This card is powerfully synergetic with the deck’s many Deathrattle minions and allows for potentially devastating Tempo if it sticks, but can be replaced by other big Neutral Beast bodies, such as Nesting Roc or perhaps even Sated Threshadon (though Threshadon works even better in addition rather than as a replacement).
- Other Beasts that have been tried in similar decks include: Dire Wolf Alpha, Golakka Crawler, Scavenging Hyena, Tundra Rhino, and even Stampeding Kodo.

Reached rank 7 with this deck with the win rate about 60 percent. Lost a lot of games because it’s hard to get a 1- cost beast at the beginning and the deck seems very weak against hunters
in first two days after update,i achieved 5th rank with this deck.Get lucky.
Really love this deck, currently 52-45 with it (or 54%), I replaced TBK with one Rhino since I dont have him and one Golakka Crawler with one Flare since I rarely see Pirates at around rank 5 and more and more solitaire mage
One mans experience, but this deck is AWFUL. I’m losing an impossible amount of games with it. Overrun by aggro and no great win conditions. Feels really bad to play.
Nice deck. I don’t have Dred and this deck seems to lack card draw. Would Stampede be a good option? Or is Tol’vir Warden better? Thanks.
What do you all think of using Bittertide Hydra in this deck?

I feel Bittertide Hydra is more suitable in a true Aggro Hunter deck. In this deck, around turns 5 to 7 the opponent will have some minions on the board. They can ping Bittertide with three minions for 9 damage to you. I would consider running Bittertide if I was able to get Nesting Roc out first. A Mage could ping it with fireball to cause 3 damage to you.
This deck takes advantage of deathrattle minions to always have board presence. Very good against Rogue / Mage from my experience.
Stonekeep, great deck. I had to make some changes, since I don’t have Kindly Grandmother. I also found Golakka Crawler and Black Knight ineffective at rank 17. I am facing a lot of Quest Rogue, Elemental Shaman, and mid range Hunter.
I added:
Dinomancy x1
Shaky Zipgunner x1
Terrorscale Stalker x1
Sabretooth Stalker x1
Volcanosaur x1
Sabretooth and Volcanosaur were added for same late round punch. Dinomancy to help boost beasts. If you have better substitutions I am open.

pretty good deck! I run 1x Call of the Wild instead of King Dred (since I don’t have him) and does to job really well.
This matchup against elemental shaman is shite, and thats all I seem to run into. I just can’t seem to deal with the amount of minions they play, and not having any card draw means I just get rekt.
Elemental Shaman is really hard to play against if they hit the right curve, but they can struggle hard even if they miss one turn. Sorry, but I can’t really help you with that matchup too much, because I’m not playing against almost any of them in Legend 🙁
King dred just one turned the game around in a mirror match! managed to reduce his board a lil smacked dred down and proceded to houndmaster him next. turn took him from a certain win complete with BM to an insta concede as heplayed his whole hand into it
Pretty good deck, been climbing from rank 9-7 with it last night. I swapped out Black Knight for Dinomancy, generally i beat taunt warrior by swarming the board early game and they frequently pull my Savannah Highmane with their Dirty Rat on turn 2 (which is an auto concede for them). If you’re going second against taunt warrior I’d keep Highmane in the starting hand so that they can pull it with the rat. It’s pretty strong against quest rogue and can beat pirate warriors if they’re down on their luck.
I have also swaped in a dinomancy and love it. It has won me alot if games.
If they can’t handle the buffed minions the game almost turns in to an auto win.
Good lord, you cannot believe how powerful this deck is. Just started at 20 and within 2 hours i stopped at 14 and took a break. So far I have 10 wins and 1 loss, i didnt fight any noobs, majority were elemental shamans, quest priests who conceded by turn 5 and a few druids. My highlight games were against 2 golden mages who were both playing quests. I defeated the first mage with 19 health left (originally 29 but he pyroblasted my face and conceded) and defeated the 2nd one with 28 health. I have a sudden feeling the Un’goro meta will be a hunter one. I may be wrong tho, since it is still too early to decide which class would be tier 1. But i say its Rexxarstone.

Really, I have replaced some copies of maps that I have, playing with the mark 1 hunter, 1 light missile and one fog is viagria 8/2, 2/4 is two wolves – I don’t think it sucks, just don’t want to spend 700 of dust on the disputed deck when the meta is still evolving) Results: easy tier 5, 17-3. Mulligan intuitive, the success of the deck is during to understand when to bargain and when to go in person

However I would like to ask about something. I check this deck because it is at the top of top rated ladder decks of the week.
Updated 3 hours ago and +300 votes… sounds amazing and I check it out, turns out this is an old Deck and simply updated to the Un’Goro card which are now included.
2nd is Dog’s Deck, +170 votes, updated a couple of days ago. This deck was completely new.
If this is the way the website works that is still very fine, but I am just wondering…. this seems a bit unfair/misleading to me.
The Hunter Deck is basicly a new Deck too, but because it is old it still has all the old votes from how long ago.
Long story short, if things stay this way that is all fine, I’m just curious if anybody shares the opinion with me that it is a bit misleading.

I’ve been running Volcanosaur to some success. Against control you can get some sick ability combos (like stealth + windfury, or “can’t be targeted” + any stat buff) and against aggro taunt is pretty clutch sometimes.

After 2 days of run can tell for sure deck is sh.t. At least for this meta, so weak against meta top decks. Most of the time had empty board due to heavy amount of removals and opponent was finishing me off as it really hard to put him in finish range of burn spells.

No, N’Zoth requires to be built around more heavily. You’d probably throw in more Deathrattle cards, e.g., Sylvanas and Kindly Grandmother. Keep in mind this deck is due for an update due to the Karazhan cards.

I think you might want to wait until we see the rest of the Karazhan cards. Quick Shot is pretty good, but BRM is rotating out at the beginning of next year.

Hey, I mentioned this in the update, but I consider the two pretty much the same. I think this style of deck is more popular right now then what is generally called Midrange.
So you dropped 2 Elekk, 2 Flame Juggler, Kodo, Rhino, Freezing, 1 Houndmaster & 1 Bow for the 8 early-game neutral cards & +1 Unleash?
What prompted this change? Is the old set still good or did something make it irrelevant?
If you had to pick a middle ground, what would it be? (half the old 9 and half the new 9)
I really liked 2xHoundmaster and Flame Jugglers.
Oh and you dropped the Grub and added Tracking.

It has just gotten more aggressive, it helps punish Warrior and potentially helps against Zoo and Shaman.
hmmmm. I left in the Houndmaster, Kodo, and Jugglers and Left out the Horseriders and Squires
(so my 10 card set is 2nd Houndmaster, Kodo, 2xJuggler, Tracking, 2nd Unleash, 2x Abusive, and 2x _____)
using 2x Dire so far, working well for me. Would either of the Argents be a better fit over the Fires or Abusives?
Squire works well with the Abusive and Dire Wolf.
As always, great write up. I just wanted to mention that the mulligan section is out of date now that Carion Grub has been removed.
I guess a lot of the guide is out of date beaches of other cards being removed, such as Tundra Rhino.

Aggro Decks like Aggro Shaman and Warlock Zoo. Miracle Rogue also has a good match against it.

You could cut Tundra Rhino or a Flame Juggler.

It could be good against stuff like Totem Golem, but it does die very easily to aoe.
I currently don’t have a second call of the wild…So I’m tech’ing a ram wrangler to fill out the 5 slot as it is not represented well in this deck. Any thoughts on it?
I think ram is fine simply as tech for a different card but shouldnt be used as a replacement for call of the wild, call of the wild is just too good of a card so its best you try it get a second one as soon as possible.
Just wanted to know your thoughts on eaglehorn bow, I feel like its kinda bad being 3/2 and having only 1 secret.
It’s a solid weapon, there are players that run it without any secrets. The secret synergy is just a bonus in most cases, you will rarely get the extra durability.
I agree, Eaglehorn Bow is a must in this deck. It’s immensely valuable in the early game, especially against aggro decks to keep their board manageable. If you get secret synergy, that’s great, but it isn’t necessary.

Hi Evident I’d like to ask you a question…do you think king krush could fit in this deck..?and what would you take out for it..?
It doesn’t fit in this deck, it’s too slow and playing something like Leeroy would be better if you’re looking for burst.
How have the Fiery Bats been performing in your experience? Hunter is my most played class, mostly mid-range variants (never face hunter!) and I recently had a lot of success with a Yogg+Lock and Load deck, and I just think Fiery Bat is one of the worst one-drops in the game compared to other class one-drops. It’s good against zoo (sometimes) and that’s about it. If the meta were full of 3/2’s it would be a good card because you could play it on one and block your opponent’s 2 mana 3/2, but 3/2’s are fairly scare. Even 1 drops have 3 health now. The only class running a lot of 3/2’s is Mage, but they have Mana Wyrm and their hero power to deal with your Fiery Bat. Hunter is the other class with a few 3/2’s but since their probably running Fiery bat anyway you won’t get a chance to contest the 3/2 most of the time.
You opponent plays their one-drop, right? Let’s list some of the commonly seen ones first.
-Void Walker
-Mana Wyrm
-Tunnel Trogg
-Northshire Cleric
-Argent Squire
-Possessed Villager
-N’Zoth’s First Mate
You play a Fiery Bat. Your one-drop only has, at best, a 50% chance of trading evenly with their one-drop (you need to hit them and then win the 50/50 with the random damage). Not only that, but most of the opponents one drops stick around and continue to provide value by growing (Mana Wyrm, Tunnel Trogg), being sticky (Argent Squire, Possessed Villager), or drawing you cards. Fiery Bat dies to a hero power and provides no value. If your one-drop has such bad stats that it only has a 50% chance of trading evenly against most of the other one-drops out there, then it’s upside should be something pretty good. What’s the pay-off for playing this poorly statted minion? Deal one damage randomly.
Sorry for the rant but I’ve been meaning to get this off my chest for a while. Most streamers and deck lists I see are running Fiery Bat but it’s just been such an underwhelming card for me, I wanted to see if anyone else felt the same. I run a list very similar to this, but I removed 1 flame Juggler for a second King’s Elekk, and in place of the fiery bats I have 1 Hunter’s Mark and 1 On the Hunt, and a few other minor changes.

I played some more games with it and you’re right it can be pretty underwhelming. I think it’s mostly in the deck to pressure control decks that can’t deal with it for a turn or two, and it’s a cheap way to activate Kill Command and Houndmaster.

No explosive for aoe clear? Also what replacement for Huge toad and can gladiator’s longbow replace 2nd call of the wild?
I might end up adding the Explosive Trap to the list, it’s been popping up in these decks recently. Huge Toad you can use River Crocolisk and/or a second Carrion Grub. If you have a Ragnaros I’d use that for the second Call of the Wild, if not maybe just run that Explosive Trap.

Freezing Trap will literally win games if you are able to clear their board and set up the trap. It’s a huge tempo swing when successful.
That’s fine, you’ll miss out on some big combos and potential trades though. I think more people will start to play around Stampeding Kodo.

Wondering what’s the real purpose of two Flame Jugglers?
I got rid of them and put one freezing trap and king’s elekk. What do you think about this?
I don’t mind your change, but most people are only running one freezing trap (they aren’t very good against Zoo, plus you have two Deadly Shot). Flame Juggler is a sturdy early game minion that hopefully pings a divine shield or takes down a 1-health minion. It’s also nice if it hits a 3-health minion and allows you to trade with it.
What is this deck weak against, besides aggro?

About half or more people are playing aggro because it wins fast .
If you get zoo and aggro shaman you lost before the game started .

It has a favorable matchup against Midrange Shaman and Control Warrior. It’s also not terrible against Tempo Warrior or Zoo.
Hi i have 1900 dust and i only miss 2 call of the wild.I have a really good winrate without it but do you think if i make those 2 to finish the deck i can hit really good ranks with it?
I think it’s probably worth it, but if you are doing fine without it you might want to just see how far you can go!

I don’t know about quickly, you’re better off with Zoo or Aggro Shaman if you want speed of climb. If you’re losing, it can be because you’re tilted (angry) and are making bad plays, you could just be getting bad matchups (variance), or you’re making playing errors. If you think it’s because you’re tilted you should just take a break and calm yourself down.
