Mulligans
General Mulligans
Either Elven Minstrel or Witchwood Piper ensures you usually draw the full combo minus Necrium Blade. Cavern Shinyfinder will most likely be picked up by your minion tutor, so throw back Necrium Blade if it’s in your starting hand; it is, however, fine to have Cavern Shinyfinder in your opener, as the earlier you drop it, the less likely you’ll draw Necrium Blade naturally, allowing you more potential card draw.
Aggro Mulligans
Basically anything that’ll deal with the early threats and allow you to survive until combo.
Control Mulligans
Theoretically, you can pull off the combo on turn 7 without Prep (or if you want to get REALLY technical, turn 4 going second [with coin] with 2x prep); it just takes a bit of preparation... That’s a weird way to say it... The combo simply requires you to set it up beforehand if you want to burst them quickly before they get their threats active (which is completely posssible). So drawing asap and throwing down a Necrium Blade before combo-turn as well as maybe playing a Razorpetal Volley early for the quick and easy burn can potentially OTK before even turn 10.
Introduction
First of all, thanks to nickus on the Necrium Blade page for putting the idea of Maly Rogue with the card. I had figured out the synergy between Necrium and Illusionist, but didn’t quite see it with Maly until it was brought up in discussion. And yes, I know, I know, “It’s not technically an OTK Because Necrium takes a turn to set up”, but 1) Nobody cares, and 2) It’s technically possible with double prep and Hero Power to break the Blade. That being said, here’s what I envision as a decent core for Maly Rogue post-expansion, featuring the good ol’ Necrium – Illusionist combo!
Core Mechanics
The deck seeks to control the board up until the combo pieces are set for an OTK. It plays like any traditional control deck; neutralize the threats on board, draw cards, and stall the game for as long as you can. The deck runs specific minions to maximize the chance of drawing the minion part of the combo while minimizing the chance of the card draw whiffing (either of your Elven Minstrels or Witchwood Piper guarantees you’ll draw the combo shortly).
Here’s the fun part: once you get Malygos, Kobold Illusionist, and Necrium Blade in hand (as well as four pieces of burn or three pieces plus Backstab; no other minions in hand, as it’ll interfere with Illusionist), drop Necrium Blade and swing. Next turn, play Kobold Illusionist, swing to proc the Deathrattle, sending a Maly on board, use either a burn piece or Backstab to kill off your Kobold Illusionist (which can be killed now that Maly is on the field), and you’ve got two Malygoses staring down your opponent. Chuck three Razorpetals, Sinister Strikes, etc. at their face, and that’s more than likely a kill.
The Absolute Dream
So let’s assume you are the incarnation of RNGesus himself with the absolute best draws possible, even rolling well on the coin to go second and get the extra card and coin (and yes, I calculated card draws). You drop a Razorpetal Volley on turn 2, and Necrium Blade on turn 3, swinging in for the proc next turn. Turn four comes, and you drop Kobold Illusionist, swing in with the blade, proc the Illusionist to spawn Maly, then Backstab your Illusionist to spawn a second one. Prep a Razorpetal to face, prep another Razorpetal to face, use your going-second coin to coin out a Sinister Strike, and there you go! Turn 4 OTK, rivaling even the most disgusting of Aggro draws.
Possible Changes and Substitution
*I was thinking of maybe putting Cavern Shinyfinder in for a Necrium Blade to ensure you also get it from your minion draw, but I’m not sure. It could potentially be good if Necrium Blade isn’t being drawn, but I’d have to play with the deck to see how consistent it is.*
As for substitutions (for the cheaper players who don’t have every Legendary in the game), I reckon you can sub Myra’s for a Sprint or two. Valeera the Hollow can be swapped for maybe some more burn or card draw. Malygos substitution? How about another deck? x3
EDIT: As of the creation of the deck, Necrium Vial hadn’t been revealed yet. I still don’t believe it’s a good fit for the deck though; it requires Preparation to even be able to OTK (in reference to this deck only requiring an extra form of burn), and adding it along with Necrium Blade would just be a bit redundant IMO. The Blade variant also has the ability to possibly tutor all of its combo pieces with the (possible) inclusion of Cavern Shinyfinder (as opposed to needing to draw into both Prep AND Vial). Plus the only thing that counters the current deck in reference to the Vial variant is weapon removal, but I doubt it’ll be as big a thing post-expansion (unless Necrium Maly Rogue becomes a big thing, which I doubt). So I prefer the Blade variant, but I can see both being somewhat decent.
EDIT 2: I’ve opted for a build that uses a Cavern Shinyfinder and Bloodmage Thalnos. More information in the Change-log below. Ignore the first paragraph in this section x3
Conclusion
Thanks for reading! I definitely had fun making the deck, and I’ll be sure to play around with it once the expansion goes live (which I’ve already started playing :D). Sooo ye. Have fun!
Change-log
- +1x Bloodmage Thalnos, +1x Cavern Shinyfinder
- -1x Necrium Blade, -1x Wanted
Playing with the deck a bit, I’ve been consistently able to get the combo off easily before turn 10 comes around (mostly around turns 7-9). That being said, the deck struggles a bit against aggressive decks. So I opted for a list that runs Bloodmage Thalnos and Cavern Shinyfinder over a copy of Necrium Blade and Wanted. I’ve had minimal mana problems with the combo (with the combo requiring the 4-mana Illusionist and four cheap spells), so Wanted hasn’t been much help. I had a bit of trouble with Necrium Blade stuck low in the deck, so the minion tutor giving you Cavern Shinyfinder is insanely consistent, along with the small body to contest aggro. Bloodmage is also great for both the Spell Power against aggro and extra card draw against control.
Only cunts play this deck
Funnily enough, this deck was created so far in advance of the Boomsday expansion that barely anyone played it when it launched. And basically nobody plays this deck still, unless they want to handicap themselves by not playing Druid. Druid is literally better at everything control-oriented than Rogue, so idk. If only cunts play this deck, then only pussies play Druid 😀
Myra’s useless … Might be a good card for tempo rogue with spiders and shadowsteps but not for this one…
Also thalnos + shinyfinder is too much … 2 low minions will bring mess often with the combo pieces.
Shinyfinder worths the risk . thalnos not.
Also valeera is useless….game wont reach 9th turn (youll prolly dead earlier.) and even if it reaches…. her passive will change into kobold and when you swing your weapon theres 50% chance to get 1/1 kobold instead malygos…
I might use shadow step instead.
Has better synergy and might give you alternative solutions if smthing goes wrong.
For example lets say you’re missing dmg spells or mp… Kobold into weapon swing (the 1st weapon… yes you have 2 weapons :D) , you get the 1/1 maly , shadow step kobold back and fan of knifes for 6 dmg clearing board. That can be done with 7 mp or 4 with prep’ed fan.
Or if you get only piper at muligan …then you wont be able to find the rest minions. Youll get just the shinyfinder. shadowstep can fix that too… 😀
no shinyfider
2 blade
no myra
+1 shadowstep ( or maybe 5 mana howdy bot?)
i guess this is the best about 60% winrate
Myra’s has saved me on quite a few occasions. Once you get the minion parts of the combo in-hand (which would probably be somewhat early), you’ll need the burn. Myra’s has consistently drawn enough burn for me when I have the minion combo. But I can see where it may be a bit unreliable.
Valeera the Hollow was a bit of a wild-card for me, but I decided to put it in. I’ve consistently had games go to turn 9 with the amount of clear the deck has, and the Kobold interfering the Reflection can be solved by either Prepping or playing a low-impact Razorpetal (you’ll still have plenty of mana to finish the combo). It’s also a clutch one-turn guaranteed survival to make sure you at least get the one extra turn, and the armor gain is invaluable in a deck with no other life gain.
Shadowstep is an interesting card to think about, but it’s a bit unimpactful for the card slot that it takes up. It’s only useful when you already have minion tutor in hand, which already gives you a big chance of winning shortly (combined with the immense amount of regular card draw the deck utilizes). And by the time that you have enough combo pieces to use it for clearing board, you’ll probably have enough to kill them anyway.
I already said my reasoning for the swap to Shinyfinder and Thalnos in the changelog, but whatevs; the deck works for me regardless. If it’s too much of a hassle, just hard-mulligan for both and Elven Minstrel. Or, and here’s a wild suggestion, don’t copy my deck card-for-card, and tweak it for your own play? 😀
nice job xD it kinda works well. feels like the combo pieces (done a few test with other cards) gather up faster with the shinyfinder though. have u considered putting thalnos?
I thought about putting Thalnos in but decided against it. The deck really needs to draw its combo pieces off of the minion draw, and Thalnos would interfere with it. If, however, the deck performs well with being able to draw multiple minions consistently even without using the minion tutor, then I can see Thalnos as being an excellent choice.
I personally would need to test it out a lot more, but I reckon putting in 1x Shinyfinder and maybe 1x Thalnos for -1x Necrium Blade and -1x Wanted or Sap would benefit the deck immensely in terms of consistency and ability to contest Aggro with the Spell Power (but only if you’re able to get a few extra non-tutored minion draws).
Updated the deck, putting in Thalnos! Thanks for the suggestion; my reasoning’s in the Change-log x3
Cool idea of building a deck with the small amount of minions for drawing essential minions quickly. Could you please explain the idea behind the Myra’s Unstable Element in this deck? Looks like it’s risky to play if any combo piece could be destroyed as the result.
Myra’s is there to potentially draw into a couple more burn spells if you’re in a position where you have all your combo pieces except for burn (plus if they have armor or extra health, a couple extra pieces of burn wouldn’t hurt). It could also be used to maybe grab combo pieces if you’re lucky, but I’d recommend not doing that (unless you have a small enough hand and deck to guarantee no mills). Idk, I’ll need to play around with the deck a bit to see if Myra’s can be subbed for like a Sprint or something, but the cheap card draw is (IMO) invaluable when all the combo pieces are assembled.
