Witching Hour Card Review
This is my favorite card art in this expansion, it’s just beautiful. As for the card, it’s far from my favorite, but I can’t say that it’s terrible.
Summoning a random friendly Beast that died this game doesn’t sound great, but how about Eternal Servitude? Is it a bad card? Of course it’s not, in Big Priest it’s usually 4 mana for a big threat. And you should look at this card in a similar manner.
And no, you don’t even have to play Big Druid to make it work. You just have to build your deck around it. You need to remember that this card only revives Beasts. It means that, unlike Big Priest, you can run all sorts of other minions and they WON’T disrupt this card. It’s not like you can randomly revive a Greedy Sprite in the late game or something.
If you play only a huge Beast in your deck, possibly a specific one, you can guarantee that you will revive it with this card. For example, the newly revealed Witchwood Grizzly. Since Battlecries don’t proc when summoning, you will get a 3 mana 3/12 Taunt – amazing! Even better, if you can somehow play an even bigger beast, let’s say something like Tyrantus or Hadronox, then this could revive it for 3 mana. However, those cards are pretty bad by themselves, so yeah.
The best one would probably be Charged Devilsaur. If you SUMMON it, as opposed to playing it, you can immediately go face. Devilsaur + Carnivorous Cube combo is already kind of a thing, and this could make it even easier. Being able to revive extra Devilsaurs for just 3 mana could be very powerful, even without any discounts (like Quest), this + Cube + Naturalize combo would be 21 damage to the face, with 2x 7/7s left on the board. It’s definitely an off-meta deck, but hey, it might be worth trying.
But there’s a catch. The Scarab tokens you get from Spreading Plague and Malfurion the Pestilent are also Beasts. It means that if you want to make it work reliably, you’d have to drop those cards, especially Spreading Plague, which would flood the revive pool with lots of 1/5 Taunts. I mean, 3 mana for a 1/5 Taunt is not the end of the world, but if you build your deck around reviving some big Beasts, it’s not really going to work.
Another HUGE problem is Polymorph and Hex. Since the tokens summoned are also Beasts, they will be added to the revive pool, and that obviously sucks.
I think that this card has lots of potential. Yes, you will sadly have to make some difficult cuts for it, but the same can be said about Big Priest. The deck could not run any other minions beside the few it did, and it still worked. Right now there probably aren’t enough cards to support the archetype, but it’s something we might see in the future. Or even this expansion depending on the other Druid cards that are waiting for us. “Potential” is not enough to get a high rating from me, though, as it might be difficult to apply in an actual deck.
Card rating: 6/10
Man, these freaking combo cards are so tough to evaluate. They always end up either being 1/5 or 5/5. By this logic, the current rating is terrible, guys!
Still wating for an awesome druid card here, or am I the only one ?
Neither druid legendary revealed yet. I guess we’ll have to wait and see
Enter Aviana *Dust*fallen.
Aggro combo druid:Charging devilsaur and early spell agression
because of witchwood grizzly, this might actually be a decent card
3 stars due to potential
Great card! Barnes into witchwood grizzly, resummon.
Ez big ez druid. (I know Barnes rotates but wild)
Barnes out of Standard thou
I litteraly mentioned it in my comment.
There’s a mode called ‘wild’
I could picture this being slotted into some sort of Taunt Druid that makes use of Hadronox, perhaps even an Astral Tiger variant that employs Grizzled Guardian. Bit of a non-bo with Malfurion the Pestilent tho, which is something to bear in mind.
Lol “bear” in mind
He meant bear ? is a beast ?
Could you imagine if Barnes were still in Standard? Big Resurrect Druid, resurrecting Tyrantus for 3 mana on Turn 4/5. Good grief that will only be a Wild thing. Other than this, this is a powerful card. 4 out of 5 stars.
You can use witchwood grizzly or devilsaur four times with that,or other powerful beasts that could come too
I don’t think would nice combing that with hadrox, summon it once and suicide with naturalize would the enough(the problem is just build a deck around that don’t summon scarabs)
Odd beast-taunt druid? With Hadranox xd?
that’d mean no grizzled guardian which is somewhat the essence of the deck
Everything about this card says that it was once a f*ing /awesome/ mage spell, or shaman if we’re being thematic
– but they ~cut~ it ! because it was too op.
The card art and name were way too cool to waste so they stapled on a last minute something for beast / hand druid.
It’s a real shame. The card isn’t bad, the effect is unworthy.
Add.
The more I look at it the more it upsets me. The colour scheme doesn’t fit druid at all, whose cards are primarily green/brown with orange/blue rarely appearing together (unlike in mage, where this is more common)
Also, looking at [ Starfall ] whose card art scene is very similar where the effect makes sense.
[ Eternal Servitude ] shows a ghost, tangentially related to resurrection
This card’s scene has no features related to beasts or resurrection or even life/nature/druid magic.
Why Blizzard? Why not just release the op version and nerf it? Why ruin the entire card theme?
Lol you really need to calm down
Read the damn lore. It’s called witching hour because it’s the hour at which the moon come out. You know what happens next? Baku THE MOONEATER comes out. Who happens to be a
you guessed it
A BEAST.
I swear you people like to open your damn mouths sometimes
I’m afraid you’re right. =( It could at least summon a Werewolf or something (awesome moon in the art).
baku
the MOON
eater
Love the art!
This card will probably never see play for one big reason, the scarabs from spreading plague count as beasts. To get value from this card you would have to play a slow druid with without the most powerful stall card in the game, spreading plague.
How exactly would that work? You can’t fend off minions from aggro or midrange decks with swipe wrath and Malfurion. Unless blizzard prints a viable replacement for spreading plaque, this card won’t see play.
Spreading plague is a 6-mana cost card. This is a card with a Baku thematic.
Do the math
I don’t think people see the insane potential power this card can have.
Have Charged DevilSaur in graveyard,
use 2 of Witching Hour
Charged DevilSaur’s battlecries won’t trigger, Deal 14 damage instantly to face
And you still 4 mana left for a Swipe, if you haven’t used it
Or you know: Witching Hour – Devilsaur to face – Cube it – Naturlize – 2 more devilsaurs to face.
Two things come to mind: First, Charged Devilsaur can go face. Secondly, Hadronox is a beast. If you run a bunch of taunts that AREN’T beasts (so no Grizzled Guardian or Witchwood Grizzly unfortunately) you could bring back all your taunts a bunch of times (turn 10 Hadronox+Naturalize, then after most of your taunts die you do Witching Hour + Carnivorous Cube or something). Is it a strong enough late game to stand against Guldan? I dunno. Maybe?
Wow this is a great card, much potential
This could help inspire some sort of Big Beast Druid where you play good early game non-beasts like Ironwood Golem and Crypt Lord, and then stuff like Druid of the Claw, the new Witchwood Grizzly, Hadronox and any other big beast that don’t also spawn beasts. Then you’d use this to revive those beasts.
You might only play Hadronox as your one beast and then play it twice more for far less and potentially get into a Hadronox-ception. It would be a Taunt Druid. Such a deck sounds really interesting, but without all of the ramp Druid is losing in April and having to wait to play cards like Malfurian the Pestilent, Spreading Plaque, and any other beasts you may want to play, I’m unsure if it’ll really work with what we know at the moment.
OMG SO MUCH COMBOS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
(HADRONOX OR CHARGED DEVILSAUR IN YOUR GRAVEYARD°)
UMBRA + SUMMON HADRONOX = OP
SUMMON DEVILSAUR OR HADRONOX + UMBRA + CUBE = OP
SUMMON BIG BEAST + MENAGERY WARDEN = OP
warden moves to wild
And wild is a real format.
The card witchwood grizzle has just been released. And this card could resummon it with full health for only 3 mana, that is pretty powerfull. Allso it can summon a charged devilsaur that can go face. So i would not be surpriced if this actualy sees play. Druid does not play early game anyway, they just ramp.
Oh goodie. Blizzard is still trying to support beast druid. With a resurect retrain. Yep, that should do it.
Seriously, not sure wether this is beter than ressurect or worse. While it does cost one more, you have a smaller pool of cards that it could ressurect. That means you can be pretty consistent with ressurections. I don’t think there are enough good beasts for druid to ressurect, but its still pretty early in the reveals, so who knows. Maybe they will get a super crazy 2-drop beast and this is a good turn 5 play or something. Maybe tyrantus turbo becomes a deck. Who knows. But this seems pretty lackluster at the moment.
At least at first glance I feel it is better because you are not restricted to play only big minions. You can take small non beast minions that sont tuin this
So its a worse version of Eternal Servitude?
Druid card, it feels more fair this way, discovering a beast that died and resummons it would be immensely powerful. Druid has a few very powerful beast
Still trying to force a beast druid eh blizzard? Well not on my watch!
This is definetly not beast druid. The whole point is you should have MAX 4-6 or so good beasts and resurrect them with this
I think we’re more likely to see a semi-beast druid, since this card increases the value of beast related cards quite a bit
