Whizbang the Wonderful Card Review

Amazing card, I just love it. I will quickly talk about the competitive aspect, but it’s not really important when it comes to that kind of effect. This card will be lots and lots of fun for any new player or player with a small collection. People without many cards will be able to enjoy the game, and that’s great!

About the competitive aspect. There is none. The card just sucks when it comes to competitive side of the game. Not only deck recipes are generally worse than the actual meta decks (some of them are really close, but others are just meh), but getting a random one means that you can’t really account for the current meta, common tech choices etc. Picking a Tier 1 deck to climb will always be better than picking a random Tier 2-4 deck every single game.

But, that’s not the point of this card. The point is to let new players enjoy actual, “meta” decks – EIGHTEEN different ones – instead of playing with the Basic cards and some Classic commons they’ve just opened. It’s a great card for casual players, who don’t feel like following the current meta trends or build their own decks and just want to jump straight into the game. It will let people play with lots of cards they would normally have no access to.

Deck recipes should easily be good enough for a new player to hit R15, maybe even R10. And that’s way more than they could do with their homebrew, random decks they have to play, because they have no cards. Better players could easily hit R5. I think that Legend COULD be possible, with enough skill and persistence, but it will be more like a challenge for the best players than a viable strategy.

And all of that, 18 different decks and tens of hours of fun for a price of a single Legendary – 1600 Dust. That’s a huge bargain if I’ve ever seen one. I’m honestly surprised that the idea passed. Then again, those new/casual players would be more likely to get frustrated with the game and quit rather than decide to drop money on the packs, so maybe it won’t impact the pack sales that much.

We still don’t know what deck recipes will be available in Boomsday, and how strong they will be, but I can guarantee that they will still be better than random, self-made decks from new players.

Card rating: 1/10 in competitive, 10/10 for new players experience.

Blizzard do us a favor. Make this into a new classic card. you took away so much and if this can stick around I think it would be great because I mean c’mon. what the heck is this going to do in wild. I feel like you guys already thought of this I expect to see it…. hopefully. MAKE CLASSIC GREAT AGAIN!!!!

Yep, I really would like if this card could stay therr forever, so that you are able to try up any new type of deck that comes out in each expansion.

You seen the ingame preconstructed blizzard decks? Go take a look. They’re all garbage.

What this card does, is give a new player the option to play with those 18 preconstructed decks. If you think this is RNG highroll shot, you’re correct because some decks are better than others. But this isn’t “play tier 1 odd paladin, cubelock, Meta Big Spell Mage, Evenlock, or 30 different druidstone decks” – this is “Give a new player a fun hearthstone experience.”

I’m all for the battlecry of “give new players a fun time” – gives them a chance to stick around.

      Don’t you?

Works when I need a toy to face my nooby friends with. I’ll just make custom decks revolving around this little bugger. My only question is if I can use this extensively in a lower-tier competitive grind. Just WONDERFUL if I can.

thanks, blizz…more easy wins against awful recipe decks…viable to rank 10…rank 5…..lolz. Not only do you have to know all 18 decks but even if one was remotely capable of hitting tank 5 or legend it would have already been done. Rank 10 sure in 200 games…… This is a joke card for people with no cards to play. Enjoy!

I hit legend with the paladin deck recipe in the first week of Witchwood. The thing even gave me about a 55% win rate until the call to arms nerf. Some of the deck recipes are actually viable.

  11. minti
    July 22, 2018 at 5:06 AM

Ok don’t underestimate this card guys.
First when the new expansion hits a lot of new cards with great power level will hit and a lot of people will not know how to play around them, whitch results in free wins couse of missplays (that is if you missplayless that is :D)
Second 18 deck recipies. 9 classes each class gets 2 decks if its one control and one agro. Your oponent will not be able to mulligan correctly againts you so those statistics sites will not be able to give you reliable info.(On the other hand if the dec krecipies are the default one this card will be terrible.)
Third is the bonus of the first 2 weeks until the meta settles. This car will not break the meta. The old bullies will still be there, I don;t see any deck competing with the refined Taunt druid or Baku paladin. So there will be nurfs for those. The planned nurfs for the baku paladins are to spawn just one 2/2 token so i don’t see much dust getting back from the baku decks. But it wil be usefull for at least 2 weeks.
Will it be usefull after that. No it won’t. Only for people who are starting the game. But even than 1600 dust for a legendary. Will stall the time you need to grind a competitive deck. So its not even that helpfull for new people as well.
IF HOWEVER the deck recipies change with the current meta and the pool of decks changes every week, or every moth or every expansion. Thats all it takes for this card to be competitive and see tournament plays.
Getting random decks is a fun aspect of every game. I like playing with mokujin in tekken. From all my favorite champs he is the only one to make it in all the series. I can say that the people that made him mastered the RANDOMNESS. And this card will be much better than all of the fails there were with casino decks.

  13. Phany
    July 21, 2018 at 10:28 AM

Clearly, this is a card targeted at NEW, but let’s not forget RETURNING players.

Now, one of the biggest gripes (and I did blame hearthstone on the forums before) was that as a returning player, it is prohibitively expensive – either in terms of time or money to get up to date with expansions. Clearly, this card is meant to address that issue, which is smart because a) it allows you to play with a deck in the ‘meta’ but b) they obviously dont make the pre-set decks THAT good (ie. with all the amazing legendaries). Some of them are just for themes (discard warlock) etc the last time I played.

This card, I ASSUME, is going to be given out free to ALL players for the expansion, and hence allow ALL to join in games that have some degree of ‘freshness’ (1 out of 18!)

I’m pretty sure I’ll be right. it is too joke of a card to put as a booster pack legendary…in which case people are going to be hopping mad if they open it – obviously, because it’s useless for people looking to bolster their collection who want to get multiple cards.

    • 8bitpineapple
      July 25, 2018 at 2:23 PM

I’d be surprised if they give this card to everyone.
But you’re right about this card fitting returning players, I’ll be crafting it.
As a returning player — I missed out on Frozen Throne / Un’guro and just came back, most of my legendaries have rotated out other than ones from the classic set… but even then my Ragnaros and Sylvanas have been moved to the hall of fame.

I don’t really fancy spending £45 (~$60) for 40 packs of Frozen Throne cards to *maybe* get a Frost litch Janna / Hadronox / Deathstalker Rexxar / Bloodreaver Gul’dan / whatever. Then doing the same for Witchwood, Un’Goro and the Boomsday Project for a total of £180 (~$235) …

Plus I mostly play arena anyway. So for me, Whizbang looks worth it. He’ll give me a way to play standard with a decent amount of variety for free (I have the dust for 1 legendary).

I’m curious about one thing – when a new expansion kicks in, will those 18 decks be updated?

      • Maciek
        July 21, 2018 at 9:37 AM

No it doesn’t. Once you put whizbang into your deck it removes all other cards from it. However it can be that an even-deck will be one of the deck recipes.

    • Shadow Fairy
      July 21, 2018 at 9:40 AM

Yes, after every expansion they either update Basic Decks or replace it with a new one.

I guess the hero power will be the class you put this in. Does that mean the deck recipes will also be a 50/50 between that class’ recipes? Or are we getting something like a druid recipe with a mage hero power?

    • Dylan Hentchel

    July 20, 2018 at 7:09 AM

I just hit 5 stars instant, this card is amazing because if you think good, blizzard always makes deck recipes with the new mecanics and legendaries etc, the decks themselves are not top tier meta but not shitty ass fck either, so for old and new players that are tired to farm dust and gold to craft different decks this card will just give them the opportunity to test everything.

And if the golden version brings a golden deck+hero power it will be the opportunity to play with full gold decks ya kno, anyway the first time of my life i can thank you blizzard for fck sake

This card I gave a 4/5. If you’re a new player you’d benefit greatly from this card. Just having a few legendaries, even if the deck isn’t amazing is enough to rise up against other players that only have basic cards. It’s not competitive clearly but on design alone it’s an amazing card

    • minti
      July 19, 2018 at 4:21 PM

yyou re forgetting that normal people wait few weeks for the meta to settle before crafting anything. This thingobviously is going to shine there. You can consider crafting it golden too since the dust gained back is more and the next expansion you can trade it safely for a legendary of your choice. I know you still burn out 400 extra dust for golden but golden cards are cool :D. Those new player friendly legendaries have been epic fails so far. Expept for the C’thun decks they were and still are competitive. And they required you to craft just the Twin emperors.

  32. Kadash10
    July 19, 2018 at 1:42 PM

Question! It says it’ll make a deck from the 18 deck recipes…but doesn’t the deck recipe system usually offer 3 deck recipes per class? If my math is right…wouldn’t that be 27 decks? Or is it booting the classic deck for all the classes and only offering the two standard themed deck options?

    • Piterno
      July 19, 2018 at 2:01 PM

Booting the classic deck, yes. For example, Paladin would get even pally and mech pally while warrior would get odd warrior and mech warrior.

      • RAGNAROS
        July 19, 2018 at 2:27 PM

does whizbang repace your hero with a different hero or does he replace your hero with whizbang the wonderful?
also does whizbang himself get replaced out of the deck?

        • Piterno
          July 19, 2018 at 6:56 PM

He definitely gets replaced ut of the deck, otherwise 1 card that likely synergized with the recipe for a chillwind yeti isn’t a good trade.
It is a new hero. At the start of the game, pre-mulligan, it gives you the deck and hero power so your opponent has to bet on which of the two decks in the class you are to mulligan for

        • Addoos
          July 20, 2018 at 2:26 AM

once you select whizbang you don’t have to build a deck, it will just randomly select one of the 18 new deck recipes for you each game you play and whizbang will be your hero.

  34. GlosuuLang
    July 19, 2018 at 1:12 PM

OK this card is great. Obviously not competitive. Or is it? If you bring this to a tournament, the opponent won’t know what to expect, even if the decks are open!! xDDD But jokes aside (I don’t believe those 18 decks will be as curated as the top decks), I REALLY would enjoy a game mode like this. Arena is the go-to when you want random decks in Hearthstone, but synergies in Arena are just way too limited and it’s all a minion and tempo game. I really enjoyed the Brawls where we get to use the decks provided in each expansion’s premade decks. They are not too powerful, but they have nice synergies. I’d like for a mode that picks a random decent deck for each player. Something like random Pokémon battles in Pokémon Showdown, for those of you who play Pokémon. I believe it would actually test a lot of skill. Anyway, 5/5 stars, even if it’s only a meme.

    • Shadow Fairy
      July 21, 2018 at 9:57 AM

This is even more balanced than Random on PS, since PS just make a decent move-set (Not bad not great either) and then give them max HP and max Speed IV (If I’m not mistaking), And than just makes it so that you are either going to dumpster players of equal rank or getting dumpstered by them.
(BTW, this is 1400-1500 rank I’m talking about)

But this card gives players decks that doesn’t stray very much from each other most of the time, yes I know Cube/Control Warlock is there, but it doesn’t have the Cubes (huge power loss).

So yeah, way more balanced than “randomness” on PS

  35. Orasha
    July 19, 2018 at 12:33 PM

This card is hard to quantify because, on the one hand, it’s not going to see serious, high level play outside of people just memeing around. I doubt anyone will bring it to tournaments, and if they do, that’ll they’ll get very far. So from a competitive standpoint, it’s not great.

From a FUN standpoint, however, it’s amazing! You get to play 1 of 18 random decks every time you queue up your deck, and those recipes probably have cards you don’t. Especially for f2p or new players, this is an incredible value card and an amazing way to experience the game while using cards you don’t have in your collection. So from that perspective and an ingenuity perspective, this card is great!

    • Nope
      July 19, 2018 at 7:57 PM

The implications for the metagame are deadly serious. I’m sure the devs put just enough juice in these recipes to prevent everyone from piling onto tier 1 as usual. Rather than to maximize your personal winrate, this is a precision instrument to stabilize the meta and we should hope it works; we could see more of these in the future.

This will be a fantastically interesting card. It’s in no way going to be competitive even if all of the possible decks you can be given are great, but I don’t think there will be a better card to screw around with on an afternoon.

I mean sure, but if you’re a Rank 20 player who can’t afford a lot of cards, this may be your best bet for laddering, or at least experiencing legendaries without having to craft them.

There is no way that they would put in decks that are tournament level

        July 19, 2018 at 2:03 PM

They’re putting it in just as Big Spell Mage stops being in the recipes. Coincidence?

Awesome personality the effect doesn’t seem as fun as Towagle or Azalina tho

Dang now I have to look at what the deck recipes are instead of just ignoring them each expansion.

Fun for casual games, easy source of 400/1600 dust on release

      July 19, 2018 at 2:04 PM

You don’t dust this, you play a few dozen games with the recipes and then choose what to craft based on what feels strongest

Hopefully this doesn’t mess up the Hearthstone ladder. Super fun in casual though.

Depending on the power level of the decks, this could really screw up ranked for a while….

And I can already imagine my frustration when I see this card and have no idea what the opponent’s deck will be….

I have been using RNG to choose what decks to use for last couple of weeks.
I have made my own versions of many meta decks, so I can’t decide what to play. Now I don’t have to chose, or make my own decks 😀 I love this card already, no matter if I get trash decks to play with

Well now I don’t need any other card anymore xD
Great for free casual players though.

No shit Sherlock. This card is clearly not for high rank play.

This is the best card ever released. The guy who has thought of that is really a genius.

1st – Its the the F2P’s first craft
2nd – craft it golden, and you have full golden decks – awesome
3rd – The Opponent doesn’t know what you are playing – while selecting his mulligan

The list goes on and on – 5 stars for creativity and new players will benefit the most. Awesome design

If the f2p player is serious about being competitive, this definitely should not be the first craft.
The recipies are rather weak to begin with (some are straight up bad) and only updated on expansion release.
Also a lot of new f2p players like to complain how hard it is to complete the class specific daily quests, and this card doesn’t help in that regard either.
But for the truly casual players this is great.

      And I agree, brilliant design.

I’d go as far as saying that this should actually be the free legendary that everyone gets, but it probably won’t be which is a shame.

      • Nope
        July 19, 2018 at 7:30 PM

It will, and the decks it gives will be good enough to prevent the meta from doing anything.. unfortunate.. again..

    July 19, 2018 at 10:22 AM

They should make this the free legendary that everyone gets. They should also make the deck recipes not suck.

      July 19, 2018 at 12:11 PM

No. This card sucks, and nobody cares about 800 free dust.

      • Ben Martin
        July 19, 2018 at 4:30 PM

Where did u get 800 from

        • Matthew Ventura
          July 19, 2018 at 7:26 PM

I think they’re getting it from the idea of pre-bundle gets you the free ‘golden’ legendary so IF it was him that’d be 800, otherwise yeah just 400

            July 20, 2018 at 7:04 AM

Don’t golden legendaries result in 1600 when being dusted?

  50. TurtleHermit
    July 19, 2018 at 10:15 AM

Kind of ironic that a card geared towards newer players is a legendary…. Still pretty cool though. 1600 Dust and you get a taste of the entire expansion. Curious how it would work with the hero power, will you keep your original or switch to match the recipe?

    • Chris
      July 19, 2018 at 10:19 AM

You get the hero and hero power matching the deck recipe Whizbang gives you. This is going to be the only card I craft as long as I have the dust for him.

    • TurtleHermit
      July 19, 2018 at 10:22 AM

Nevermind, video suggests that hero power is changed to fit recipe.
