Spirit of the Dead Card Review
I really like this card, especially flavor-wise. The “Shadow Priest” theme they’re pushing this expansion is very cool. The “obvious” synergy they’re pushing is the one with Bwonsamdi, the Dead, but that’s definitely not the only way you could use this card in.
First and foremost – it’s a 1 mana 0/3 with Stealth. That alone can make it usable in… Combo Priest. Since minions in Stealth are generally hard to kill, and Combo Priest is often about sticking a minion on the board, this can be used to do it. Power Word: Shield + 2x Divine Spirit + Inner Fire creates a 20/20. Of course, it’s not the best combo target, you’d rather do it on an 8 health Twilight Drake for example, but it can be a nice backup plan if you can’t stick a minion and you’re holding your combo pieces. You can already sort of have a backup plan like that with Stormwind Knight, but the problem is that you need to do it all on the same turn – to get to the same 20 damage, you need 9 mana (2x Divine Spirit + Inner Fire), while Spirit of the Dead can be dropped on T5 and you can combo on T6, that’s a significant difference.
Another use is, probably the one that would fit the Bwonsamdi strategy most, is a kind of Midrange Priest build. You want to have a solid board, play this, do some trading, shuffle a bunch of high tempo minions into your deck, and either draw them or play Bwonsamdi to get all of them at the same time. The problem with this kind of strategy, though, is that a) Midrange Priest is not really a thing and b) that once you run out of steam, it doesn’t matter whether you topdeck a 1 mana copy of a minion or a 5 mana copy, they do the same, since you can still play it + Hero Power and do nothing else. But it would make Bwonsamdi a huge refill, which might be what this kind of deck needs.
Another option is a Deathrattle Priest with Reckless Experimenter, a card that was pretty hyped, but turned out to see play only in Mecha'thun build. This card has really nice combo with Reckless Experimenter, since you’re following him with a bunch of Deathrattle cards that will die, and then you get 1 mana copies of them back into your deck. And if your opponent doesn’t AoE, you can get 1 mana copy of Experimenter too (or maybe something like Carnivorous Cube etc.) which is definitely a fine discounted minion to get.
And of course, it can fit into something like the Resurrect Priest build Asmodai has popularized. The deck runs a lot of big minions, the kind of which you would want to shuffle into your deck as 1 mana cost versions. Imagine if your topdecks would be full of 1 mana The Lich Kings, Obsidian Statues and – of course – Prophet Velens. Now, the problem here is that this totem doesn’t let you actually get there – it just improves your late game. The deck runs Shadow Essence and getting the totem would be pretty bad, also getting one from Zerek's Cloning Gallery is a 50/50 situation. It’s amazing if your opponent has to clear the minions individually, but it’s bad if he just AoE’s, as it does nothing.
It feels like this card has potential, but it might be hard to use. The main problem I see with this card is that Priest decks aren’t generally minion heavy, nor do they do a lot of trading where your own minions are dying. Most of the time, the class has between 0 and 2 minions on the board, and if Priests do any trades, most of the times they try to value trade and not just run their minions to die. This card would be best in slower matchups, but a slow deck often doesn’t play any minions, so you can’t even run your own minions in to kill them. It has no immediate value, it’s not really useful in faster matchups (because the game will most likely be over before you draw your 1 mana copies of big minions), it’s hard to set up on bigger minions etc. So as you can see, despite it being a well-rounded card that might fit into many different decks, it might actually be pretty clunky to use. So that’s why I’m cautiously optimistic about it – not saying that it won’t see play, but I don’t see it as a meta-breaker yet. It needs more synergy, and more ways to get consistent value out of it, in order to be a great card.
Card rating: 7/10
Priest is necromancer in disguise.
Im so happy for priest seems he is geting back to meta these new priest cards have so much potential and we have some suport from last expansions.the new giant is so good and wild gonna be very strong for priest
This card is bad.
If you don’t use it to put specific combo pieces in your deck, it compares unfavorably to academic espionage, which is the worst card of any deck it’s included in.
If you use it to hit specific combo pieces for cloning gallery, it’s worse than baleful banker, unless you manage to hit several pieces at once. Which you can only do by summoning the pieces with cloning gallery. But if you have your combo pieces on board, just do your combo already, don’t spend 3 turns killing and shuffling and drawing and replaying your own minions.
If you use it to combo without cloning gallery, you’ll have to kill your full-sized combo minions yourself which is basically impossible.
Think of the weasels in wild, Mon.
The problem is that they have to die…
Best case scenario I think:
– This + Cloning Gallery that pulls out Baron Geddon
– Next turn: Bwonsamdi that gives you all the big minions for 1
Or: without Geddon, if Spirit survives your opponent’s turn, you can use Spirit Lash
I am not sure if it will be BIG minions like you say, cuz it will shuffle in a 1 cost COPY… you might get another lich king but with 1/1 stats 😛
The clones march on!
Can even work here. Only down fall is you get two cards you don’t want to summon and not only Barns.
Do we know if the 1 mana copy will keep all enchantments? Or now does it have to state in the text that the copies keep enchantments (e.g. Dire Frenzy)?
It has to be stated in the text, like Dire Frenzy, as you said, or now the new Pala 2 drop.
NO! they don’t. All copied cards are created equal to the original one, despite the actual state of it. from there, any extra effect is added and explained in the card that made it possible,
As when you revive a minion, you revive a copy of it, not the original. and as a brand new copy, it doesn’t revive with the enchantments.
Cube is a good example. you can destroy a 10/10 Snowflipper Penguin with taunt, lifesteal, divine shield and mega-windfury and yet, cube will give you 2 1/1 penguins when it dies.
It does not seem to keep enchantments, however, the minions that was shuffled in does seem to have access to their full stats
Cube Taunt resurect Priest…Scary
As a loyal priest player, I am cheering for a priest comeback after this expansion comes out, this and bwonsamdi are the best loa and spirit among the other ones. Hurray for the Light!
5/5
As a Magic the Gathering player i agree with you but Hearthstone doesn’t follow all of the same rules.
Huge potential for setting up wacky combos or just constant tempo with Witchwood Piper and Bwonsamdi themself. Do note that your opponent can deny you value by not giving you minions to trade into, though.
This makes Surrender to Madness make a lot more sense (playable though? Ehhh we’ll see). Whatever you call this direction they’re taking Priest, I can dig it.
Spirit of the Dead is both cheap and versatile. Its three health and stealth will allow it to stick around for a bit early on and can easily add extra value to your minions later on. Combined with Priest’s Loa, this can turn and early game tempo advantage into card advantage.
The only thing that would be holding this card back is the Priest class itself. It could be used in the Cloning Gallery deck as an extender though.
I also think it’s a perfect fit for Deathrattle/Reckless Experimenter-Priest. With this card + Bwonsamdi you can refill and snowball like crazy, if you manage to get a good Reckless Experimenter swing turn.
On the other hand, I doubt the package or the card will be a good fit in Cloning gallery/Malygos/Velen Priest, simply because it would not work out in a favorurable way.
Good, huge Value card for one Mana, with the downside of being weak to aggro.
4/5 in the right deck.
I really like the versatility of the 1 mana cost. I think some newbies will missplay it a lot tough :D. It can give your control decks great value. I can see this fit into my wild reno deck where its some sort of belefull banker but cheeper and more stickyer. Its drawback is that priest does not have a lot of card draw itself. Most of the card generating mechanics the priest has is coppy cards from your oponent’s deck. So to make it more consistent it need the legendary card to function. We still don’t know what telanji will bring in to the table.
You can play this and zerek’s cloning galery for a whooping refill of 6x 1 cost cards to your deck. The combo screws the current wild crchtype though so its a standard combo wombo. the stealth will keep it from dying and even if the enemy uses some mass spell to kill the minions i thing you still have the effects no? And doing this you get some extra bwonsamdy so more card draw.
Again without the legendary card it requires you to have tons of card draw to make it work. But the value may be worth it. I see it being more powerefull than deadman’s hand and the boomship so at least it will beat warriors :D.
Hmm it doesn’t say “another friendly minion” does that mean that when this dies it also shuffles back in deck? If so this is op…
It still won‘t work, because it says „After“. That means the effect only activates after the minion has entered the graveyard, so Spirit of the Dead wouldn‘t be on the board anymore to resolve its effect. It would have only worked, if the text had used the „Whenever“ mechanic.
As a Magic the Gathering player i agree with you but Hearthstone doesn’t follow all of the same rules.
Zereks cloning gallery combo deck looks good
3.7/5
Love the card! Reload for the cloning gallery, reckless experimenter. Now just some more good deathrattle cards and who knows, could be very competitive. Whole new twist on the revive priest.
same problem as other priest combo cards, it’s useless too use against aggro
But priest has a lot of anti-aggro tools, such as duskbreaker(my favourite dragon), pyschic scream and a lot of others(which however will be rotating out in April)
I think it would a be fitting card for a Reckless Experimenter Deck
another Lyra for 1-mana? yesPleaseThanksVeryMuchGg.
I like 1 cost maly!
Also 1-cost Velen and 1-cost Ysera, Lich King etc.
