"Oh, THAT'S how she brings the warts!"Rain of Toads Card Review
This is a bit like Phantom Militia, but you pay the last Taunt’s cost as the Overload. Militia is 3x 2/4 Taunt for 9, this is 3x 2/4 Taunt for 6 + 3, which makes it slightly better overall, since you can play it earlier, when it’s still more relevant. On the other hand, you CAN’T control how many of them you want. You sometimes play militia just for a single 2/4 because you also want to do something else that turn.
It looks like Blizzard got burned by Spreading Plague (rightfully so) and they don’t want to release another powerful spell that floods the board with Taunts again. And so, in the end this card is comparable to a common Taunt that has seen zero play in Shaman. Well, it’s definitely a bit better, although not by a huge margin.
I can see two decks in which this might be played. First one is Even Shaman. The deck likes flooding the board, and doesn’t care that much about 3 mana of Overload on Turn 6, since it can just jam a 4-drop on next turn (or Flametongue Totem + another 2-drop). Three 2/4 Taunts is a nice board flood for the mid game and the deck can take good advantage of that.
Another deck is Overload deck running Lesser Sapphire Spellstone. It upgrades the Spellstone by itself, and it’s a good stall tool for the mid game. But I feel like Earth Elemental is just a better option, especially since it’s also a good Spellstone target in case it sticks (plus it synergizes nicely with Ancestral Spirit). Maybe they will want to play both?
So the card by itself is pretty bad, but it might be good enough to play in some decks because of the synergies. Hard to say at this point, but I don’t think it will ever be amazing. Oh, and you won’t mind pulling it from Hagatha most of the time – it will be a nice option vs Aggro and more value vs Control.
Card rating: 4/10
Whoever is trying to compare this card to Phantom Militia is missing something important.
We all get that 6 mana and 3 overload is a total of 9, but one of the reasons Phantom Militia sees so little play is because turn 9 is way too late to make value from it. Rain of Toads is 6/12 worth of stats that can be played on 6, which is early enough for it to have an impact over the course of the game. Not even mentionning the obvious synergy with Snowfury Giant, Storm Chaser and the rest, this is already worth 5/5 to me.
if you can make them survive long enough to turn 8 with electra+bloodlust is really good, but these are just my dreams of crazy man
Love the people commenting “worst spreading plague” here, well sure when you start with a 6 mana 7/35 taunt, everything looks bad in comparison
Electra for 6 toads lol. 9 mana might be too much though.
Turns out having only 4 mana on turn 10 is pretty bad. But 6 toads in one turn is a flavor win.
I feel like this card could be crazy good. Even cost + proactive threats + tokens benefits even a tonne. This is far fetched but I could see this being one of the most impactful cards printed
Kuchiyose no jutsu!
Balanced stall card, but you can’t put too many Overload cards into your Combo Shaman. There will be more frog cards this expansion, I think, so we’ll have to wait and see if there are more synergies. As of now, I think 3 Overload is too much investment to stall for one turn on 6. 2/5
Wild evolve standard gigle
My God….. I am stealing that idea.
Six mana upfront and three later for 6/12 worth of stats seems okay. It could play well into Evolve effects as well, but it won’t be possible to play this on six and Thrall, Deathseer on seven due to the Overload. There really isn’t a better general defensive option for Shamans at the moment, and it will probably end up in Even Shaman as a result
It does compare well to Phantom Militia, but I can’t see it doing that much for Shaman outside of Arena.
Very strong card. Summoning multiple taunt with only one card is always good because it dodges silence and single target removal, while protecting your face and dealing dmg. Very very good card. Will see play in any shaman deck
Yes it dodges silence and single target removal but you’re going to hate Dragon’s Fury, Flamestrike, Spreading Plague, Vanish and Psychic Scream; possibly Twisting Nether unless you drop this on curve.
Having said that though – Shaman has Bloodlust and can potentially make more use of minion generation than any other class bar maybe Paladin.
Even Frog Shamen Meta
5/5
Worse feral spirits right? Like twice the initial cost and an extra overload for one more body and one more health? I think feral spirits is better
3 mana and 1 overload for 2/6 worth of stats spread across another body with taunt sounds right in line with the value of feral spirits.
Isnt feral spirits 3 mana and Overload(2)
So 3 mana and 1 overload for an extra 2/4 taunt compared to 1.5 mana and 1 overload for one 2/4 taunt in feral spirits
Anyways, Phantom Militia>This card
More flexible and a better topdeck when you run out of cards
Also better for Hagatha if you ever want to run it
You are forgetting that feral spirits summons 2/3s. So this gets you 2/6 more stats.
This is so much better than phantom militia on both 6mana and 9mana
It’s also better than feral spirit because it’s the same mana/stat ratio but reaches the 4health threshold
I think all of you are wrong about this card. This card has actually a very very very hight power level. Premium card for shaman. For even or shudder work it’s just insane. You protect you face and board whlide dealing 6 dmg per turn. It’s resilient to single target removal and silence so you have a taunt safe from Spellbreaker or viles pine. It’s also very hard to pass and it deal a lot of damage when you trade your minions in. Just an insane card overall. You’ll see. Cards that summons taunt are always misrated.
Interesting defensive tool for shaman, but this is just a crappy spreading plague. Getting 2/4 instead of 1/5 is not bad, and even getting just three of them is really nice, but the overload is too much. They balanced this card from the cost of phantom militia (9 mana for 3 2/4 with taunt), but phantom militia saw play just because has some kind of interaction with the warrior quest. Just having 4 mana on turn 7 is really bad and the play you made turn 6 is not even that gamebreaking.
I don’t really feel like this card will be playable, but I could totally be wrong: some new overload mechanics could be printed or some new stuff for tokens. I guess we’ll see…
First reaction: bad.
Second look: saw that they have taunt.
Third thought: Eh. Might see some play in those niche overload shaman decks. And whatever token stuff shaman gets up to this time around.
For some reason this one just feels really hard to rate. Let’s wait and see what sort of Token and Overload synergies get printed.
It’s a great card, i’m just not sure that shaman want defensive tools to get them into the late game right now?
Here’s hoping for next year!
Worst spreading plague and cost 50% more, may be playable
Dude overload shamen is back
5/5 for me
