Mistwraith Card Review
Cool card, but I don’t think that it will see play even if for one simple reason – there are already similar Classic cards that have seen play in Miracle in the past, and I feel like they’re better than this one.
First one is Questing Adventurer. It also gains +1/+1 every time you play a card, but it’s not limited to Echo cards. Yes, it starts as a 2/2 as opposed to 3/5, which is quite a big difference, but it also costs one mana less, so it’s easier to start comboing it, and dropping it on Turn 3 with Coin or Preparation + something. Questing’s HUGE strength is that it gains stats from those 0-1 mana cards like Backstab, Coin, Prep etc. AS WELL AS the Echo cards. So while it starts lower, it’s very easy to catch up and then to get ahead of Mistwraith.
And the second card is Violet Teacher. This one is also a 4 mana 3/5 that activates its effect when you play a certain type of cards. But I think that it’s safe to say that Spells are more common than Echo cards. Rogue Echo cards are spells anyway, so it will proc from them, and again, it will also proc from a bunch of other cards. I’d say that value of +1/+1 and a 1/1 is quite comparable and mostly depends on the matchup and situation. E.g. it’s better to get +1/+1 against Defile, and it’s better to summon 1/1 against a single target removal.
While I could see running this over Questing (as it has a bigger initial body, so you COULD drop it on Turn 4 without any other cards, unlike Questing, which needs to be combo’d with at least 1 or 2 cards right away), I don’t see the reason to play it over Violet Teacher. Teacher’s effect is easier to proc. And anyway, neither Questing, nor Teacher have seen play in Miracle Rogue in a while already.
The fact that this card costs 4 mana makes is a bit awkward. The cheapest Echo cards revealed so far cost 2, so if it was e.g. a 4/6 for 5 mana, it would make more sense. Right now, when you drop it on T4, you can only follow it up with 2 Echo cards and float one mana. If it was a 5-drop, you could follow it up with three Echo cards and not float any mana. Also, Rogue already has a card it wants to play on Turn 4 (Fal'dorei Strider) and no real 5-drop (Vilespine Slayer is not really a 5-drop).
All in all, it’s not really a bad card by any means, but I just feel like it pales in comparison with the currently available tools.
Card rating: 5/10
I can confirm that this works with Glinda Crowskin affected Minions.
Probably the best thing will be “the Fandral effect”… playing against it, it’s a decent enough 4-drop being 3/5 and it’s kinda risky to leave on the board. Whereas Fandral curves into Nourish nicely, this being Rogue, is going to require the Coin, then 3x Cheap Shot meaning you’ve now had your board splattered and have to deal with a 6/8 minion which could potentially become 9/11 next turn.
However – there are already better cards that perform a similar role in Rogue AND better 4-drops.
Not better than Questing Adventurer or Van Cleef. Probably won’t see play… 2/5 stars, being generous…
Hm… Echo Rogue… Interesting. You could either fill your deck with a bunch of echo cards (Face Collector, Pickpocket, Cheap Shot, neutrals) along with Shadowstep to get more echo procs, or you could build a hybrid Miracle with the standard Edwin/Questing package, while throwing in Pickpocket and Cheap Shot for a bit of consistency.
It should be of note that you only need ONE echo proc for this to be above average (then again, Yeti as a guide isn’t really relevant, plus you’re sacrificing the echo component of the card to make it seem lackluster compared to other cards, so…). Two procs leaves you with a 5/7 for 4, three in one turn gives you a 6/8. That’s pretty good. Not to mention there’ll (probably) be more echo synergy cards in Rogue, so that archetype could open up.
As for Miracle though, if you only have two echo spells, that isn’t really consistent enough to play this minion (especially since one of those spells FILLS YOUR HAND, in which you need space for your other spells). You’d want much more than just four cards out of thirty to make this card worth the amount of mana you’d need to chug into him, so as of now (since there could and probably will be more echos), this card isn’t that good in Miracle.
This reminds me of pre-nerf Undertaker.
Now hold your pitchforks and torches- I recognise just how remarkably op Undertaker was and this card by no means reaches close to his power level. But you got’a admit the effects are quite similar “whenever you play a deathrattle/ echo card get +1/+1”
Undertaker was a 1-drop which made him imensely more powerful for a lot of reasons. Also the deathrattle mechanic is better in comparison to echo at least for now.
In the back of my mind though I see potential for a minion that snowballs into an incredibly powerful threat. Rogue won’t have a problem getting this to a 5/7 in one turn without comitting too much.
And unless the opponent has some good removal, this guy is getting massive the next turn. Not that a 5/7 4-cost minion is bad.
Fun card, probably will be better archetype than totem shamen. Not competitve, but fun to experiment.
Decent stats as is, but this will only end up being playable if Echo is a mechanic that is allowed to extend past the set it originates in. None of the Echo cards revealed thus far have been anything particularly amazing, It’s pretty obvious HS R&D is rather afraid to push this mechanic since something like this will be on the knife’s edge of breaking the game in any form it takes.
Echo Van Cleef
Questing Echventurer
That isn’t a Mistwraith… mistwraiths are shapeshifters who have translucent skin to the point of seeing their bones, I see no bones here.
Maybe he’s wearing a robe.
did you just assume it’s gender? don’t you know it’s 2018?
nope, that is ghost, not a mistwraith
If it was revealed in China they censor out bones and the American version will have them.
Bones? Really? What about all of the skeletons and that one rogue bone card?
Seems like complete trash, honestly. The Echo cards we’ve seen haven’t been that cheap to play and there aren’t many I’m convinced are actually going to see any kind of meta presence in Rogue (and you’re sure as hell not shoving them into your deck just to enable this). Strikes me as the generic “when you use new mechanic X gain stats” card we see for most expansions, the difference being that those are usually neutral and understood to be bad. Really not sure why this is a Rogue card.
I don’t know, Preparation could help with the Echo Mechanic. Think about it. Play Mist Wraith, then Preparation, and then said Echo card in the same turn. Meaning, Preparation allows for: “The next spell you cast this turn costs (3) less.” Say ‘Cheap Shot’ just as an example. It may seem like trash, but for 0 cost. Whoa! Look out!! That 7/9 taunt just got dusted. if the situation turns out like one wants it to. So don’t discount this card out of hand. ‘Cheap Shot’ cost 2, so for 0 cost and 2 Damage per card summon. Yipes!!!!
The echo copies won’t get the discount, so it’s too mana intensive.
Why not? Preparation states: “The next spell you cast this turn costs (3) less.” Rogue has three, Face Collector, and then the spells, Pick Pocket and Cheap Shot. Meaning, this situation:
It is turn 8, I have 8 Mana, and Wraith, Preparation, and both Pick and Cheap in my hand. I choose to play Wraith, 1st, then Preparation, then Cheap Shot, the first gets the discount, and then I play Cheap Shot again, twice, all three deal 6 damage to a 5/6 taunt. Killing it. And that opens the other play to my facial attack from my other minions. Of course, this is largely due to whatever happens on the board. I’ll use it, that’s for sure.
Okay, so, this card + the other new one, Pick Pocket. 10 mana combo, Mistwraith + 3 Pickpockets, 6/8 + ‘Draw’ 3 cards. This kinda sucks when put into context with something like a Kazakus 10 Mana Potion where you could potentially get an 8/8 Demon, Draw 3 Cards and gain one more spell on the side of that. Obviously the drawback of Kazakus is the stipulation of having only 1 of each card in your deck. And so the lack of that drawback may be worth the loss of the extra sell and the 2 Atk on the MistWraith. In that context, Mistwraith isn’t that bad. But otherwise, I feel it will just be a repeat of Unbound Elemental, thoughts?
Btw 3/5 is my rating for this card!
It’s like curator only the cards are slightly worse, you have to wait until you draw both parts of the combo and it doesn’t have taunt.
How is it like Curator? Its not drawing any cards let alone beasts/murlocs or dragons. It doesn’t have taunt, it buffs from echo played cards, its differently stated, it doesn’t have a battlecry, its not a legendary, its a rogue class card not a neutral.
Sorry, just don’t see any area in which the two are remotely similar.
Maybe if the 2 burgle weapons are good enough to warrant a burgle deck but that seems like a stretch.
Potentially really good in some kinda echo rogue or summoning portal warlock.
You probably slam it turn 4 and force them to deal with it as a pseudo taunt
Warlock? It’s a rogue minion
Unbound Elemental’s … ancestor, I guess; or grandson; I guess Elementals are more ancients than “human-like ghosts”
Not too bad, but not too great either
