Some say the world will end in fire. Some say in ice. Why not BOTH?Meteorologist Card Review
This card has some potential, but only if you can keep your hand sizes really high. And I mean it. If your average hand size is 5, then this card is pretty bad. 6 mana for 3/3 that deals 4 random damage (4 not 5, because it starts doing damage after it leaves the hand already). With 9 cards in hand, this is Avenging Wrath with a 3/3 body. Seemingly really powerful, given that Avenging Wrath has seen play in a T1 deck, right? Well, not exactly. It has seen play for a few specific reasons that don’t translate well into another deck/class. Paladin plays it because the class has no reach (and Mage does), because of the Equality synergy (and Mage doesn’t have anything like that) and because it is a Genn Greymane deck, so it has limited choices.
A 3/3 with Avenging Wrath attached would be good, but not as broken as you might think. But that’s like the best case scenario. You would need to have a nearly full hand to do it. Big Spell Mage might fill that condition, but Big Spell Mage doesn’t want to deal a bunch of random, Avenging Wrath style damage. The deck doesn’t care about face damage, for example, and this can hit it. That’s why the only deck I can imagine this seeing play in is Elemental Mage – a deck with hand sizes so big that it commonly runs Mountain Giant. The effect also fits this kind of deck quite well, because the deck doesn’t run many spells (because otherwise Book of Specters would be pretty weak), so having a source of removal/burn damage can work nicely.
Tempo Mage with Aluneth is also a possibility, although the card would be terrible until you get Aluneth. By Turn 6, you usually have maybe 2-3 cards in your hand, so it would be just bad.
Bad-to-average in most of the Mage decks, but it can be very useful in a deck like Elemental Mage. Especially if your opponent didn’t develop and you shoot him for like 8-9 in the face, that can really hurt.
Card rating: 7/10
Could see this in an elemental mage that runs the legendary spell. Still 3/5
This is insane with spell damage right?
+2 spell damage will give 3 damage missiles for each card !
Oh it’s a minion xD
This card would pair very nicely with an archmage arugal and and book of specters draw engine I think
Since it is going to cost 1, and has aluneth on the side, it will see a lot of play
You compare this with Kobold Apprentice and you gotta really wonder how the card design staff actually works.
It would be so much better if it was deal that much damage for each card in your hand to a minion. Like seriously, dumbest card designer ever.
I think just like cinder storm, this card is underestimated. 4/5
Cinderstorm relies heavily on meta, if odd/even paladin wasnt a thing, cinderstorm would be bad, same goes for this i guess
makes sense.
Cinderstorm is saved not just for paladins. This card is good to snipe the little minions of any aggro deck and against control is able to be 5 damage to face in empty board by 5 mana
Not getting the low rating here. True, it doesn’t have a home in Tempo mage, but minion mafe or any control based deck can make use of a minion plus a clear.
It might be that paying 6 for a 3/3 body is really weak, and even if you would do 7-8 random damage, if that is spread out it might not achieve much. The cards is really situational. If there are too many targets, or you do not have that many cards in your hand, but need to play it, it will achieve little.
– Not saying it is terrible, but it is niche.
Poor stats and high cost. Would rather have a 4 mana 1/1 for the same effect.
Also, while I know this is taking meteorologist literally (study of meteors rather than actual meteorology) but shaman was the meteorology class!
If you have more than five cards in hand, Meteorologist can be better than playing Cinderstorm and a 3/3. Granted, Cinderstorm is seeing play mostly because of Odd Paladin, and I don’t see Odd Paladin being so rampant on Boomsday that playing a slower version of the card made for a Control styled mage instead of a Tempo one would need to be played.
This Hand Mage style of deck generally seems sort of out there to begin with, and outside of the summoner card, I can’t see any of them seeing a whole lot of play.
I mean yeah it bad a 6 mana 3/3 doesn’t cut it even if the effect is kinda neat.
1/5
should’t this be revealed tomorrow?
anyway i have been playing some reno mage these days and its relly amazing how many cards that dump card in your hand you have. Like babling book, Loot hoarder, Shimmering tempest, Pyros, cabal cristal runner, Azure drake, Eteral arcanist, Kazakus And i have been experiancing an alway growing hand depsite the fact that i play stuff.
While in standart mage has much less discover mechanics there is enough card draw to make this work. Its deffinately a book of specters support card. Draw 3 is amazingly powerfull tool to build your deck around. And the mountain giants are always very popular. Too popular these days if you ask me since the hall of fame takes everything good away from us :D.They should release some filler cards to keep things in check. i can feffinately see this being a 3/3 deal 7 dmg to al lenemyes at least. For 6 mana its not that bad. I know its not an elemental. But 6 mana is where you want your cards to have iniciative. It can be tricky to make it work wonders i narena. But for 6 mana you should be having a 6/6 worth minion or 6/7 so if this can deal 4 dmg its still not bad.
I predict bad weather coming for the playrate of this card 😀
This is a 3 mana 3/3 plus Cinderstorm as long as you have 5 other cards in hand. The average minion stats is offset by the fact that you get both effects for 1 card so I’d call that break even. If you have more then 5 other cards then it’s bonus. There are elemental Mage decks that can get huge hands with Spellstones, Book of Specters, Aluneth. Arundel etc. so in those sorts of deck this could work. Same synergy as Astromancer, of course.
So you need at least 5 cards in hand when playing this in order to get a Cinderstorm + a 3/3 for 6 mana (which is mediocre, but not terrible). More cards means more value. Could this be included in BSM. I mean, it would be nice burn to face if opposing board is empty, but otherwise, many of the missiles are gonna hit minions. Great against the likes of Odd Paladin, but otherwise I believe it’s too meh. Aggressive archetypes can’t run this because their hand is empty, and I don’t think it carries enough of a punch for Control archetypes. 1.5/5 stars.
Taking a wild guess here… One of the new mage premade decks will be Handmage and the other Spellpower Mage. Might even be one and the same.
This card is good, you guys forget about book of spectres and Aluneth. If you tried playing elemental mage, you would notice, that you have all the time full hand. Also it can be 9 face dmg against combo decks.
It’s a usually-weaker Avenging Wrath with a body. If you’re tinkering with minion mage, it’ll be nice to have some reach so you can cut Fireball with peace of mind. Is it viable though? Ehhhh..
This is some of the worst art I have ever seen. The wolf looks like he has Down’s syndrome. And why is it a wolf in the first place???
Couldn’t agree more. I normally don’t even notice the card art, but this is terrible. Maybe it’ll be good when golden… Like when you pause the tv on a frame with a hot person looking absolutely awful…
I doubt it. The animation is based off the still drawing, the drawing isn’t a frane of the golden animation.
so many cool effects this set that are just to cost=stat inefficient
Is the damage split among all targets or does it only damage one enemy?
From what people have said on reddit, works like Arcane Missiles
Thanks!
Sooooo… Why is this a thing?
