Menacing Nimbus Card Review

Menacing Nimbus is just about the most obvious card you can make to help Elemental Shaman. It’s a solid on-curve play, gives you extra value and has Elemental tag. Generally, early cards that have an okay-ish body and give you some value tend to be solid. The reason is that they can be dropped on the first turns, but also have some sort of late game scaling. You are generally pretty sad about topdecking let’s say Fire Fly on Turn 10. But this one? Not that much. Of course, it still depends on what random Elemental you get, but even if you get the Fire Fly, that’s an extra 2/2 body you have on the board. And then, there are lots of big and/or strong Elementals in the pool, including the new Electra Stormsurge.

There is no doubt that this card would see play in Elemental Shaman. Not only the deck has no good Elemental 2-drops at this point (Fire Plume Harbinger is very low tempo, and Murmuring Elemental is not really a 2-drop), but this is just really solid. Shimmering Tempest sees play in Elemental Mage, and Nimbus is just better – 1 more health, Battlecry instead of Deathrattle, and probably a slightly worse effect, but only slightly, because Elementals are always good to have in, well, an Elemental deck. The main issue right now is that there is no good 3-drop that needs Elemental synergy, so Elemental tag on Turn 2 doesn’t have that much value. Yes, we have a Thunder Lizard, but the card is really mediocre

So the card is above average, I’d say that it’s like 7/10 in Elemental Shaman… but the problem is that Elemental Shaman is just a bad deck. Unless it gets some strong synergies this expansion, or in the next one, it’s going to be the next pre-Un’Goro Taunt Warrior. Remember how Blizzard was adding more Taunt synergy to Warrior, all the way from TGT to Gadgetzan? And it never really worked, the deck was mediocre at best. Same thing with Elemental Shaman. It’s just too… fair. Fair decks aren’t great in Constructed, because they get beaten by unfair decks. By the decks that can cheat the mana curve, drop big minions early, flood the board time and time again, combo you down etc. Playing okay minions on the curve was a solid strategy back in the Classic, but not now. And so, Elemental Shaman needs some great synergies to make this card work.

That said, we also have another deck that might want to run it. It’s Even Shaman. Given that the deck has no 3-drops, 2-drop + Hero Power is your Turn 3 play. That’s why you want to run as many 2-drops as possible. And while the deck does have some solid 2-drops already, having another one to choose from wouldn’t hurt. Given that it comes with an extra value, you could even replace one of the higher cost cards to fit it in. After all, you CAN drop it on T2/T3, but it can also replace itself with something bigger, so you won’t run out of steam that quickly. Also, Even Shaman runs Earthen Might without any early game Elementals to play it on. This could be the one – putting a 4/4 on the board and adding two random Elementals to your hand is not the worst T4 play ever. Of course, whether it will see play still depends on other Even cards we see this expansion, but it’s a possibility. It wouldn’t be a deckchanger, like let’s say a Flametongue Totem. But it would be something like a Blink Fox in Odd Rogue. An okay on-curve play that gives you extra resources, not always great, but sometimes potentially game-winning (like, in this case, getting an Al'Akir the Windlord, or Kalimos, Primal Lord or even a simple Blazecaller can be huge).

All in all, if Elemental Shaman sees play, this card should see play. Assuming the deck won’t go Prince Keleseth route, of course. Other than that, might see some play in Even Shaman. But since Elemental Shaman doesn’t look great right now, and this card is not AMAZING in Even Shaman, I’d say that right now it looks right about average. Rating would increase with some high potential Elemental synergies, of course.

Card rating: 5/10

I think this card is a solid 3. It has ok stats, not amazing though. It has an elemental tag and generates an elemental. Say what you want but it’s pretty decent and I’d much rather be able to get an elemental than a random class card. Yes there are some not so good elemental cards but there are quite a few really good elementals, the newest shaman legendary being one of the most flexible. This card is underrated I think. Not an amazing tempo play, but good synergies with the possibility of game changing results.

This card doesn’t seem spectacular in Constructed. The best it has for it is that it is a cheap activator for elemental synergies. But a pure Elemental Shaman has never been a good deck. In Even Shaman it competes with many other powerful 2-drops, although it’s also good in the late game… Still, I don’t see it. Dark Peddler and Hydrologist are good because they let you discover stuff. This is like Blink Fox, which I have never liked playing (the card art for Blink Fox is awesome). Now, Arena, that’s something else. Cards that replace themselves are quite good there. 1.5/5 in Constructed, 3.5/5 in Arena.

“it competes with many other powerful 2-drops”
      2drops are garbage right now
even shamans have to play scalehide and juggler

It is indeed not comparable to peddler and hydrologist because discovering matters
it is indeed comparable to blink fox, which is staple in odd rogue
it’s better than blink fox because it gives 2 elementals in a deck that runs kalimos and earthern might

it’s not going to break the game or anything but it sure is going to be played in even shaman

In Even Shaman I’d rather drop a Knife Juggler, a Flametongue Totem, Murloc Totem or Dire Wolf Alpha on 2 before I drop this guy. I do prefer to top-deck this guy in later turns, however.

Blink Fox is not a staple in Odd Rogue. Many, like I do, choose not to run it (your powerful 3-drops are Flappy Bird and HCT, and newer lists have Mukla). I believe Blink Fox is a considerable loss of tempo, and its 3 health means it’s dying to the most common AOEs in the meta.

Go to HS replay, rogue, odd rogue, sort by winrate
          https://hsreplay.net/decks/#playerClasses=ROGUE&archetypes=219&sortBy=winrate
Blink fox is in every list.

Open all the lists of the first page, sort the cards by Drawn Win Rate
          (here’s the first list https://hsreplay.net/decks/cCyfQ8ARoSXeoqUwWTmtQf/ )
Blink fox performs better than fledgeling in every single list

Here you have an Odd-Rogue list that hit 150 legend without a single Blink Fox: https://www.reddit.com/r/CompetitiveHS/comments/8zr5kj/150_legend_odd_rogue_guide/ I’m not surprised Fox performs better than Fledgling according to stats, since Flappy Bird is a high priority remove target, and Blink Fox is not. And if they both get removed, Blink Fox at least got you an extra resource. Sure, Fox will single-handedly win you a game sometimes (gives you Consecration vs Odd Paladin), but how often does he give you at least a useful card? I’d say less than 20% of the time. I’d even run Tanglefur Mystic over Fox, the extra health matters A LOT, and at least you get a low-mana minion to combo.

“I’m not surprised Fox performs better than Fledgling according to stats, since Flappy Bird is a high priority remove target, and Blink Fox is not.”
            That’s no excuse
“performs better” doesn’t mean it stays alive longer or it connects face more times. It means having blink fox instead of fledgeling increases your chance of winning. That’s it. Blink fox is flat out a better card in the deck.

I like playing tier 20 decks, don’t get me wrong, but… How can you guys say this is a good one in “Elemental Shaman” when “Elemental Shaman” is sadly a low (low low low) tier deck?
Like I said I sometimes enjoy creating fun stuff but Elemental Shaman is not something that pops out of my head when I think about “incredible deck”.
Not even getting another Al’Akir, Kalimos, Fire Ele or Blazecaller will make you win against those 7-turn 5/5 1/5 2/4 4/12 4/12 druids.
This card WILL see play in Even Shaman, more synergy for Elemental Might and a decent 2 drop that adds something to play (even if that something is bad, given how bad elementals are on average). And again, Even Shaman neither is the greatest thing.

Not so bad body, card advantage, covers the weak 2 mana slot, type tag that enable stronger moves… It is good no matter if it see play.

This just goes in even shaman. Since the deck already plays elementals, this is basically 2mana 2/2 draw a card.

What about Hagatha? Draw 2-3 cards.

  11. LeonardoFRei
    July 16, 2018 at 5:53 PM

    This card seems okay overall

2 mana 2/2 get a card is pretty good, and if Elemental Shaman ever be a thing this will help a lot

Problem with elemental synergy in general is that you need to always play one the turn before playing the elemental you actually want to play, since that is the requirement for their battlecry, Servant of Kalimos is the best one to get more elementals and keep the chain going in case you lack any in your hand, and Firefly/Flame Elemental are good cheap elementals to serve as triggers, but even then it limits it

This is a cheap elemental meaning that it will be easy to combo into another one next turn, and gives you a random one, even if you get a Magma Rager, when you lack an elemental to activate the others battlecry, it’ll serve it’s purpose nicely

overall pretty decent card that might see play outside of Elemental shaman

wich may or may not see play

No one’s considering the obvious here. We should be asking “what if he goes infinite? Or atleast nets us 1-2 other nimbus’ ?” Then, he seems super value. This card can be used in anything from tempo to value, and just from history, 2/2s that just add “stuff” are generally always good, i.e Dark Peddler.

Menacing Nimbus is quickly becoming one of my favorite cards. It’s just so positive and generous. Practically costs nothing at all at two mana you drop him on the board and that chill ass mofo gives you an elemental to use later in the game. And you also get this adorable little 2/2 can ping things but usually is too harmless to be removed.

But more than the MN is just so positive. It comes on the board like “do you want to play an elemental?” and I’m like “yeah MN i do want to play an elemental let’s do this shit” and when he attacks he’s like “ELEMENTALS ARE FUN” and I’m like “yeah they are SO FUN.” He doesn’t say some bullshit macho shit like “I will destroy you” he’s just like “nah elementals are fun.” And it looks so happy. I mean this is a whirlwind literally brought to life by magic. It understands it’s life is a temporary magical gift and the dude is just fucking loving it. I mean look at his face he’s just so happy.

I am literally never sad when menacing nimbus is on board. IDK if he’s gonna make it into the metagame or not but for now he (or she) a pretty chill card

Yesss my elementals replace yourselves over and over so my Hagatha can get infinite value and I can keep getting kalimos and blazecallers off this and servant of kalimos and grumble them back for even more spells and even more value.

Also Even Shaman, but screw that

    July 16, 2018 at 12:36 PM

If Even Shaman is still going to be a thing with the new expansion, this card will be a good fit for that deck! The card itself seems also good with the tempo

  20. TPKPatchy
    July 16, 2018 at 11:53 AM

I mean, if you ignore the elemental tag this is a 2 mana 2/2 that adds a minion to your hand, in a meta where the 2 drops are really bad.

Think of it for a tempo rather than an elemental deck, it’s just something to play on 2 if you don’t have flametongue.

It’s weaker than babbling book, swashburglar and blink fox because random class cards, and random mage spells tend to be better than a random elemental. But in a game with few 2 drops it could see play if tempo shaman is a thing.

    • H
      July 16, 2018 at 1:15 PM

This is a value card not a tempo card. In a meta-game with bad two drops the most common stat line we see is a 2/3 which happens to wreck this card in terms of tempo. Will the extra card matter enough to make up that difference? Elementals already have card generation going for them so this doesn’t add anything unique to the package, especially in shaman where your guna play Earthen Might. But together they might be good enough to make an Elemental Even Shaman list more viable? Outside of that we’ve always had Firefly into Earthen Might which is a much better sequence. This will probably see some play but just throwing more bodies into the pile doesn’t seem like a fantastic addition to elementals…

    • Blimey
      July 16, 2018 at 2:16 PM

Random class cards are actually pretty trash on average (also depends on the class somewhat, of course).
Way more difficult to highroll something game changing (or even playable) than with cards that narrow down the selection, like Pavel’ing book and this one.

Swashburglar only saw play because of Patches, and was the worst card in the deck outside of that synergy role. Fox is pretty meh as well, and only sees some play because other possible proactive 3 drops right now are rather meh too.

The best thing about this card, and the reason why it might see play, IS the elemental tag. So if you play it later in the game you automatically meet the requirement for some of the strongest elementals to be able to play them for profit on the next turn. So it can be considered even in decks that don’t go full retard on elementals (those decks haven’t been good so far, and honestly, probably won’t be), just have a few good ones already, like Genn shaman.

  21. Solus
    July 16, 2018 at 11:50 AM

Blink Fox and Swashburglar both saw play in a deck that care exclusively about playing tempo, and both are 1 under-statted by 1 point and add a random card to your hand. This at least guarantees a card that can activate your synergies. I guarantee it’ll be a staple in most if not all Elemental Shaman decks. It may not be enough to make Elemental Shaman competitive, but that doesn’t make this card bad, the archetype just lacks a decent wincon.

If Elemental Shaman moves on from Shudderwock Shaman that swaps out Acolyte of Pain and Lifedrinkers and for stoneshappers and Kalimos, room will be made for it.

  23. Soup And Salad
    July 16, 2018 at 11:15 AM

This is a pretty simple card and whether it sees plays will be based on if Elemental Shaman sees competitive play. Along with Firefly and maybe Murmuring Elemental, this will probably be the cheapest cards that can enable the Elemental effects one will probably play in the deck.

Firefly is by and large better and more versatile, but this too at least replaces itself in the hand, even if that card can vary in quality from an Air Elemental, Cauldron Elemental. or Magma Rager to Electra Stormsurge, Blazecaller, or Kalimos.

This is a perfectly fine card as is. Decent on curve, decent during the late game. It isn’t the win condition Elemental decks seem to be lacking still, but it’s something that should help the deck to some extent.

    July 16, 2018 at 10:48 AM

Wow this card is so underwhelming. If elementals were bad before this card, this won’t make any difference.
I wish Blizzard would just give up on printing shitty elementals after 3 expansions already.
You know what would have been cool though? If you replaced every instance of ‘elemental’ with’ ‘mech’.
    2/5 nice arena card

    • Soup And Salad
      July 16, 2018 at 11:05 AM

You can get a lot worse than a 2/2 that replaces itself in the hand when you play it. I don’t think Elementals are that far off from being playable on their own in either Mage or Shaman. The thing the decks lack is a solid win condition. This certainly isn’t that, but probably a step in the right direction for Elemental Shaman.

At the absolute least, this is another useful and cheap Elemental to continue the elemental synergies and will naturally go into any Elemental deck that can play it.

        Exactly.

      • Amethonys
        July 16, 2018 at 3:46 PM

The thing is this card is better than most cards people are talking about. Regardless of how “bad” the minion is ALL cards this generates ARE playable and at worse you get a cauldron elemental whereas babbling could get you shatter and such and playing thief rogue against warrior was a nightmare.

This card IS held back by being a 2/2 where there are a DECENT amount of 2/3s, but on the other hand outside of odd rogue killing 2/2s isnt exactly convenient without trading. Hellfire overkills and there are generally less weapons running around as well (bloodrazor is turn 4 and there are fewer paladin/shaman weapons running around). I think it’ll easily be a 4/5 just because it is a 2 mana 2/2 with massive upside and very little whiff potential. Its arguably better firefly.
