Level Up! Card Review

Another one in a classic line of Paladin cards that do things with Silver Hand Recruits (get it, because Recruit is the mechanic of this expansion?), Level Up! has big shoes to fill. Quartermaster immediately jumps to mind as a direct comparison and although he is no longer in Standard, he has actually been carrying Token Paladin to the top spots of the Wild ranked metagame. This card does exactly the same, however it loses the 2/5 body, which is not insignificant, and replaces it with Taunt. This can be powerful in its own way, allowing your Recruits to protect a more valuable piece, however we have to keep in mind that usually, though not always, having the extra body is better.

Still, we have to be aware of the “critical mass” component – as yet another card that buffs recruits and as more ways to generate them are added into the game, eventually we have to wonder whether or not we want to have these cards in the deck simply because the more redundancy there is, the more consistently a game plan can be executed. Even if a certain approach is not inherently the strongest in the game, doing it often and reliably can be a successful winning strategy. By gaining not only additional board flooding options but also new ways to turn those tokens into threats, the Recruit deck will eventually reach critical mass where it can simply keep re-flooding the board again and again, exhausting the opponent’s ability to answer threats. It could, of course, be entirely possible that Level Up! doesn’t find its way into that deck because it’s simply not powerful enough, but time will tell.

    Ok…Blizzard is printing another veeeery weak card. Soooo let us normal people who actually plays this game(and not a superb designers who don’t know a shit like john Snow!) imagine this card is –
    Give your Silver Hand Recruits +2/+2 , Cost 3 mana. Wow suddenly this card becomes playable…
    Is that hard to create such a card? NO! But Blizzard still continue printing “fun” cards , like for example warlock new legendary RIN, THE FIRST DISCIPLE what are guys from Blizzard smoking?!?

      What are YOU smoking? not every card has to be meta defining I don’t want this to turn into Yugioh were they completely break the game to a point were they increased the life points from 4000 to 8000 because of power creeps

        The real life yugioh card game has always set Life points at 8000. It was only in the show that life was set at 2000 at first and then at 4000 when the Battle City arc began.

            The problem is that we need cards like this to be better in order to actually compete with other decks and have a chance. Look at mark of the lotus in druid conpared to this card, it is a solid 1 mana give your minions +1/+1, no specific minion requirement, and just for 4 less mana you have just -1/-1 and no taunt, which shouldn’t that small of an effect gap.

    the problem that i have with drygulch jailor, this card and lightfused stegodon is the fact that you’d have to make a deck specificly to make this work since these cards are not good standalone. Even if you manage to make a deck that is 100% focused on making these cards work you’d still have the problem of making sure that your silverhand recruits stick on the board. This is quite difficult to do. If you cant do that then you’ll have to spend a lot of mana just to play and buff the recruits a little. To topdeck these cards would be quite bad as well. Unless some really good recruit-buff/recruit-generating cards get printed i dont see this archetype work out, outside of wild of course.

    Hopefully this works with the paladin quest. There are some decent silver recruit synergy, But not enough without some other strong cards coming into play.

    Playability? Eh…

    Probably far too slow. Maybe playable in a Tier 7 deck, but even then I have my doubts.

      How so? The Horseman the paladin DK summons are not silver hands.

    I really want to see Silver Hand Recruit Paladin work as a viable Tier 2/3 deck, but making this the same mana cost as Stand Against Darkness is terrible. It ruins your curve and doesn’t make sense to run it as you could go Stand Against Darkness on 5 then Tarim on 6 – sure your SH Recruits don’t have taunt, but the upside is a 3/7 body with Taunt

    Hmm, probably descent in standard, although hard to set up. But in wild… Remember must for battle and quartermaster are still really strong cards in wild and silver hand paladin is a pretty strong deck already. Even though not as strong as quartermaster, a good addition to the deck-list nonetheless. Silver hand paladin will most likely be a tier 1 or 2 deck in wild now.

    2/5 in standard, 4/5 in wild.

      I don’t think you’d want to play this either with or over Quatermaster. In a wild silver hand paladin deck, you’d already have five to eight ways to mass buff the recruits. Any more that doesn’t at least fit well into your curve as Lightfused Stegadon, Quatermaster, and Sunkeeper currently do. What the deck could use is a two mana Recruit spawner, but what there currently is is more than enough.

        Yeah but Quartermaster has the buff attached to it’s body, if u play Lvl up! u can have more recruits on the board.
