can give you extra copies of Bloodreaver Gul’dan. More broken with umbra. (wild)
I think people are thinking too much about this card and its implications. Handlock is not making a return, but this will see experimentation somewhere. 2/5
You were saying…?
Weak stats, aiming to help control, in a deck that actually can´t allow himself to build greedy control without being free stars for agro, love it.
Archivist + this + Warlock Quest. Choo Choo, the Quest Warlock Train doesn’t have brakes. 5/5
You can now pretty reliably have only Dinomancer as a discarded minion. Alternatively, you can have more easily target Soulwarden and two other cards as the sole discarded ones. Like, if you have Skull of Manari equipped, first Merchant discarded Soulwarden, second discarded Void Lord, and maybe you also randomly discarded a Shadowflame. Each turn you can now deal 6 to the enemy board while forever filling yours with Voidies.
Imagine being Loot Hoarder, but you have to recycle your deck.

Has anyone thought of the applications this could have with Archivist Elysiana??? This allows you to get a second and even third copy of her which paired with the new quest, an extra 20-30 cards with some of them costing 0 sounds like insane value to me in a control matchup. Warlock would just need a way to heal and stay alive versus bomb warrior and aggro. Thoughts???
It’s an ok idea but downside is you have to kill this on your turn or open self to silence which may make a reappearance with some of these new possibilities. Also you need to survive long enough to use and most often Elysiana will be dead in hand since only 2 reason would make you play it. 1 deck near empty and 2 bombs in deck threaten you. If you want to add more copies of Elysiana warlock already has a trick for that and it provides more resources. Plot twist + Elek once you have finished quest Plot Twist counts for draws. Loads your deck with a bunch of cards and seeing as how most your cards will be 8 Mana at most you could play 2 big cards in one turn from hero power pulling.
I do agree with that but the elek combo seems even slower but could be run along side this, I played around with a rough draft of a deck list that was a plot twist with quest/alysiana and it looks like it has potential. The reason I think this card duplicating your alysiana is better than the elek is because playing plot twist like that makes it a dead card until those pieces are drawn and it can already be so powerful in other ways with like Betrug or Dorian. I’m not disagreeing with you but I do believe this card has potential, not meta defining but could really be impactful in some matchups.
The only limit to plot twist really is having plot twist and the Elekk on the other hand Elysiana wouldn’t even be touched till way into late game and there’s no telling if the 5 cards you would pick would have actually been any good.
Elysiana is only really good for stalling fatigue or stopping bombs trying to plan around her 10 cards is stupid. Only 2 classes could get away with Elysiana for value. Warrior if pulled Omega Assembly that 6 mechs at cost of 2 cards leaving 8 left from Elysiana. And rogue Academic Espionage would add in total another 20 cards that cost 1 even if they’re random. And because of the change you’d lose a lot of tempo having to dump 9 Mana for a single minion that only has a 7/7 body. And your trying to consider getting 3 of these? The only thing you’d do is counter bomb warrior but plot twist warlock technically can mitigate that deck anyway.
The quality of the cards doesn’t have to be amazing as typically, around half of them would cost 0 because of the quest, making a lot of these cards a lot better than normal. Again, it could be way too slow and is meta dependent but could be a really fun deck to play/try.
Problem is warlock lacks the control pieces required in order to make the game long enough for Elysiana to have any impact. It works with Shaman and Warrior simply because of Hagatha and Dr 7 respectively. Warlock lacks any overly good AOE, and this will be an overwhelming problem to nearly all the aggro decks currently being used; which given hearthstone’s history will only get faster after new sets, prior to nerfs coming down. You potentially get more copies of Elysiana than Shaman (which has two minimum), but lacks the infinite value hero power that Hagatha basically has. I think this card may be super nasty in zoo, as you discard a card and get two copies back; and getting double leeroy or two magic carpets would be enough to win the game.
Most overrated card so far. It’s a loot hoarder except worse because it doesn’t cycle and is more vulnerable to silence. One more mediocre discard card is not going to make tier404 discard warlock good.
As a wild player, I will enjoy my two copies of guldan or another or Malganis or so be it, this isn’t for discard lock, it just doubles a card in your hand. And two Bloodreavers is a lot of demons. This is very powerful in certain control decks and grants potential for combos by having multiple copies of the same card. Let’s see how it plays before we say it’s overrated or weak
Not even counting there’s several ways to get past silence specifically killing it on your turn. If using for guldan you just need to use this at any point before 10 Mana so it’s even playable with things like dread infernal which would kill this in same turn summoned at 8 cost.
Coil, defile, bane, even useable with cards to sacrifice a friendly minion.
I think the biggest thing he’s overlooking is this is a Huge card for aggro warlock decks. In standard those don’t run many high cost cards and they use several cards that can kill a friendly minion. Such as carpet lock opponent kills your carpet turn after summon then your stuck waiting for the other if you don’t run much higher than 3 cost you could possibly get away with playing this and the lackey card putting 2 carpets and 2 Lackeys useable with carpet in your hand. Manage it right could work with handlock only trick is being sure tags the giant.
Oooh, good point
I also really like that defile, sometimes it’s hard to have a 1 health and this does it well
Probably one of the best 1 health cards to use with defile possible at least 2 dmg to board and could give 2 10 costs that load up board best part is won’t interfere with demon ressurect pool. I think there’s only a handful of cards better with defile and that’s purely for dmg not return value.
If you are putting a 2-mana 2/1 in your Aggro Warlock deck, you should probably give up on Hearthstone.
Considering I’m reffering to it as a card that would generate value it’s not to different from playing 2 Mana 2/2 with give 2 RNG 1/1 at cost of one minion. When this would give 2 of the highest cost card from hand at time. The weakness of aggro is if opponent breaks your momentum you have issues recovering.
So we’re talking about a 2nd guldan that costs 2 more and that you can only play after you’ve played the normal guldan but only if you drew it before you played the first guldan and also it’s a 2card combo and you don’t benefit from the hero power because you already had it.
I don’t think wild is slow enough for that to happen, but even if it is, this is still ridiculously worse than guldan, yet this is 4.7/5 while guldan is 4.6/5.
Yes, and we are talking about a second board of doomguards when playing cubelock
I am not comparing it to guldan, I’m saying that running this to copy guldan in your hand and be able to play two of them (yes, one turn and then another when running low on resources to get a fresh 7 demons)
It is a good way to copy strong and effective cards including heroes, and as someone at rank 5 in wild Control warlock can work given enough combo and jade tech, you just need to beleive it can work and try it until it does
I am not saying this is better than guldan either, guldan has to be one of my top 3 cards in hearstone, but it has fun and semi janky synergies
Funny this is you also would have an advantage if faced a mirror match and popped your guldan first. I remember those games I sat back with a twisting nether in my hand and popped it off after they used Guldan.
It’s honestly not discard lock that I find concerning with this but more so zoo. Sure silence but most decks only play one copy and that doesn’t come down until turn 3 at the earliest. Just because silence answers this doesn’t mean it’s bad, because every card has a weakness; and it’s all a matter of how common silence is in the meta, which as it turns out only a small handful of decks even run in their deck.
“Just because silence answers this doesn’t mean it’s bad”
That’s true. And that would be relevant if someone said “silence answers this therefore it’s bad”.
It’s basically loot hoarder. Which is not good enough card generation for any tempo deck, and zoo is the deck that least wants card generation.
comparing this card to loot hoarder is laughable. Firstly being that loot hoarder doesn’t get to choose what card it draws, and secondly getting two copies of a particularly powerful card in a certain matchup seems strong. Oh you need an extra owl? Well you got it. Playing against token? Well here’s a second carpet. Need extra burst? Well here’s a leeroy. Saying this card only draws a card is way understating it’s upper power level, especially in the hands of a player who knows precisely what card currently in their hand will impact the game the most.
Do you realize you said comparing it to loot hoarder is laughable, and then you immediately compared it to loot hoarder? Comparing this to loot hoarder is obviously the most logical way of thinking about that card.
If you want an owl, and you have an owl in your hand, you play owl. You don’t play every expensive card in your hand and then pay 2 to discard your owl and hope to not get earth shock / sap / frost nova etc in order to maybe get a second owl that won’t even be useful because they know you have it.
Having two different cards is better than having two of the same card. Having a card now is better than having a card later. Cycling is better than creating cards.
Verdict:
5th least played card of the set, 3rd worst deck win rate of the set, single worst played win rate of the set.
Not sure off the top of my head, but with those effects, this has broken written all over it. Solid but not overwhelming for aggro. Can’t use with Magic Carpet. Thinking to myself of how to combine that deathrattle effect with Undatakah somehow. If three of these died, could you get 6 Undatakah’s?
Wouldn’t really work that well carnivorous cube doesn’t work with undertaker because the battlecry gives the target the death rattle uses.
So yes this could give you 3 Undatakah if both copies targeted but this is a useless death rattle for him if tagged by his battlecry reducing effectiveness.
This actually is a dangerous card if you run a discard style deck even if your opponent silences this there is Soul Warden for possibly getting the discard back in late game. Early game the only threat to this atm is priest unless opponent runs owl it likely won’t get silenced before it dies.
That said handlock would find this a tricky card unless get it early. The Giants cost goes down with each card added to hand and that discounted cost is what would be considered when this targets a card NOT it’s original cost. That’s taken from the exodia mage I had using simulacrum and LPG.
True. All true. And lately, Warlock is all zoo and nothing else. So this is nice card for a change, and it gets 5 stars in my book. I like it’s effect, and hopefully, I won’t run into silence cards like Ironbeak Owl.
It’s a loot hoarder with a very targetable tutor. We need to see the high-end cards for Guldan first, since this isn’t like the days where he had Doomguard and Voidlord and Bloodreaver Guldan. He also needs better taunts/removal/healing before he can dream of having a slow or combo-based deck. But this clearly has potential!
As a baseline, this looks good; playing this on turn 2 and then killing it off will give you +1 net cards in hand, same as a life tap, but with the bonus that instead of losing 2 health, you get a 2/1 body on board.
There’s more upside: instead of drawing a random card from your deck, you get an extra copy of your most expensive card, which is great if you have Mountain Giant. Getting extra copies of Dr. Morrigan rolling is also really powerful in a long game.
There are some drawbacks though. When you discard a card, you tell your opponent which card it was; maybe they play no minions and leave your Expired Merchant on the board instead of letting you cash it in for two early Mountain Giants. Maybe it gets silenced, or worse, stolen through Shadow Madness. It’s also very unlikely to discard High Priestess Jeklik, chances are a Handlock will have more expensive cards in hand. 4/5
Everyone losing his mind about this card. But the more i think about it, the more i’m conviced this card is balanced. It is a 2mana 2/1, so i think it is overall a worst loot hoarder because it will not help you cycling your deck, which is insanly bad against aggro decks.
This card will be good in one specific situation ; greedy control against control
It’s good into a quest discardlock, but quest discardlock is trash …
Well there’s one discard synergy.
This might be meta defining to a point that it forces many decks to run silences. That being said the risk is actually bigger than one might expect, the best way to use this card is to coin it on turn 3 or use it on turn 4 with Evil Genius or something similar. Otherwise if you discard your giant or other win condition it will just get lost in the silence. 4/5
Speaking for Wild (and myself): Evenlock will love it.
Giants!!!!! Everyone loves mountain giant right well get ready to have more of them! A lot more! Twice as many perhaps.
Insane value on a stick. If you’ve never played MTG, I’m telling you, discarding your own cards can lead to broken things. In HS this has never really taken off, but with this kind of cards, it might just do so.
Mortal coil it for the value plus draw a card, which feeds into the quest. Noice
3 mana make 4 Jekliks and draw a card.
Spend turn 3 doing nothing, die to aggro ages before you complete your silly quest.
Because lock got no aoe clears for turn 4 onwards.
How are those AOE’s working out for you currently? Handlock/Controllock/whatever – it’s like a Tier 16 deck, no?
They got most of their win rate farming aggro decks if you take a look. Token druid, zoo lock, rogues. You can’t compete with the value generation of warrior or mage so that’s that.
Insane 5/5
Discard Lock never worked as high tier deck but this card could help.
The discard synergy doesn’t even matter, this is insanely good in any deck that cares about value.
Not exactly. You are getting one extra copy of your highest cost card in hand. But if this gets silenced or stolen with a potion of madness effect the card you discarded is gone for good. This card is a lot like loothorder but it can’t cycle into new options it just adds more of the same to your hand. It’s better in a fatigue matchup but then you shouldn’t be playing warlock. However if you hit a giant with this it suddenly looks a lot better because you can play those out faster despite them being the most expensive cards in your hands and get them back with 6 mana 6/6 pretty consistently. For that reason I’m calling this handlock support.
its probably intendd to be played and then mortal coiled or something else to avoid that interaction
its a cheap enough card that its a small sacrifice to set up stronger combos late game
