"The coin? You used me for THE COIN!?"Electra Stormsurge Card Review
This is definitely the strongest of the 5 cards of the initial reveal. It’s a cheap Legendary with decent stats, Elemental tag and a powerful effect. The card has pretty much no downsides. Doubling your next spell can be an incredible effect in basically any Shaman deck. Just looking through the list of Shaman spells, here are some examples of the cards that are good by themselves, but would be even better if doubled in the right scenario:
- Lightning Bolt – Simple use, but it increases the damage from 3 to 6. Can be used to kill bigger threats or for more burn damage.
- Earthen Might – You can even use it on Electra, since it’s an Elemental. 2 mana for +4/+4 and two random Elementals. It’s 5 mana and 2 cards for a 7/7 minion AND two random Elementals, so you end up with no card disadvantage. Even better if you already have another Elemental on the board – let’s say if you have Tar Creeper, you can buff it to 5/9 (on your Turn) and attack immediately.
- Rockbiter Weapon – Kind of a niche use, but if you run it in Aggro deck with Doomhammer, it’s 6 extra damage for 12 damage in total.
- Far Sight – You draw two cards instead of one, and both get discounts.
- Healing Rain – I mean, what more can I say? 24 healing instead of 12 healing, it’s almost like a Reno Jackson for Shaman.
- Lightning Storm – How often you face a board that’s out of range of Lightning Storm and you have to play two – if you have them? Well, this lets you play two even if you only have one.
- Lava Burst – 5 extra damage, great in some kind of Aggro Shaman.
- Bloodlust – Yeah… one Bloodlust is usually devastating if you play some kind of Token Shaman. Two? Even assuming you only have 3 minions on the board, it bumps the damage from 9 to 18. With 4 minions, the total damage is 24.
- Volcano – 30 damage spread among all of the minions, but since this will die too, it’s really 27 damage. Still, should be enough to clear most of the boards.
To be honest, even doubling The Coin can be useful in some scenarios. Let’s say when you’re on 3 mana, but you need to drop Flametongue Totem to trade up. You also want to push the tempo and you have coin. You can play this + Coin + Flametongue, then Coin basically becomes a pre-nerf Innervate.
As you can see, the card has lots of uses in all kinds of decks. In Aggro – it’s burst. In Control – it’s more AoEs or healing. In Midrange – a bit of both. I really don’t see a reason to NOT run this card in a Shaman deck. Since it has an Elemental tag, it also gets extra value in any Elemental build.
Literally, the only downside of this card is that it stacks overload. But then again, playing two copies of some Overload spell also does… Let’s say that when you play 2x Lightning Storm, you still get 4 mana overload, it’s not like it magically disappears. But with this card, you get an extra 3/3 minion (not to mention lots of flexibility, as it can double any other spell in your hand too depending on the situation).
I’d say that it’s an auto-include into any Midrange and Control deck. Not sure about Aggro, maybe doubling burn is not enough, since you wouldn’t exactly want to keep it until the late game and you usually use your burn to finish the game. But if a Token deck with Bloodlusts pops out, especially if it was more on a Midrange side, it would make more sense. Oh, the only deck that definitely won’t play it is Even Shaman… obviously. Other than that, looks insane.
Card rating: 9/10
IS CAST twice.Jesus…
Guys, imagine the fully charged spellstone while running an overload shamans deck. Auto fill your board with snow giants lol
Just a thought. This is a battlecry. If you combo this with Murmuring Elemental does the spell copy 4 times?
Makes sense, yep…
It does not. This card’s Battlecry is “Your next spell this turn casts twice.”
Twice is always twice, doesn’t matter how many times you play the effect. If it said “an extra time” or something like that, then it would work.
this is disappointing 🙁
I was really looking forward to combos with Murmuring Elemental + Electra Stormsurge + Lava Burst.
Solid card, but I actually don’t think it will be THAT overpowered. 3/3 for 3 is decent, but nothing you would play plain in any deck, aggro or cobtrol. Now the effect makes it insane, but this is given you have a spell in hand, which means you probably have to hold on to this card, and it is awful if played on curve. Also, the second spell would target randomly, I guess, so that 2x lavaburst has a good chance of hitting the wrong target. It is a powerful card, but I actually think it will be pretty balanced, and a lot more useful in control than in aggro.
Ok, so apparently targeted spells hit the same target twice, that makes it a lot better in aggro than I assumed. Also makes it a lot better all-round.
double healing rain, double bloodlust, double rockbiter, DP, double cheese…the potential of this card is twice as any other released so far!!!! I like it. I like it.
I doubt the second spell hits the same target 100%, it’s probably random
It’s not random. It’s very much the same as a targeting doubled Battlecry (Brann Bronzebeard).
lol imagine a mage getting this with Unstable Portal, reducing this to 0 cost. then turn 10 this with pyroblast for 20 dmg. seems quite balanced 😀
Imagine the second pyroblast hitting your face! totally op!
Sigh. Do you see “Targets chosen randomly” anywhere in the text? No? That’s because THEY AREN’T.
its actually broken.
Not only can you bloodlust at turn 8 and kill your opponent considering you have a board but you can also otk at turn 10 dealing 26 damage with just 4 cards (Electra->2xLavaBurst->LightningBolt)
i expect a nerf so not gna craft it
Your next spell. Only one.
Maybe this card combo with legendary spell in this meta
Very versatile, nice card, great with Bloodlust
This really would go super well in an elemental deck. You can cheapen it, search it, return it to hand for a second use ect.
Far sight (i think the potentially strongest) drawing 2 cards and reducing your cards by 6 mana total. It’s undeniable that this card is the best of the reveals so far. The flexibility for any situation is absolutely insane. I can’t think of a single card that has more applicable implications in all honesty other than maybe brann, who I would say not really due to the elemental tag and being cheaper.
This card will get nerfed to 4 mana, I’m 100% sure. I can imagine aggro/tempo shamans finishing games at turn 8 with double bloodlust. Totally insane card imo.
Think those rounds where you have 0 hand, used Hagatha already and he is 10 HP… Now you draw this girl, get a doubled lava burst and imagine your opponent throwing his mouse.
Its boring i can’nt spot something else about this card lol
Its so flexible, theres obvious the potential of this card
Wild Reno Shaman with Kazakus and Rafaam for s***s and giggles?
… and Thaurissan of course.
Reno SHAMAN with KAZAKUS… giggles for sure man.
… good point – didn’t think that through did I? 🙂
Excited for the nonsense this is going to bring. Ten face damage on turn 6 with Lava Burst? Obviously a punishing bloodlust, +6/+6 cryostasis with Moorabi on board? Make freeze Shaman great once?
I see the most powerful sinergy combined with Bloodlust. It doesnt have to be even shaman deck to go tokens.
Anyway we should wait to see the new even cost cards or more “even theme” cards.
Although this card can be strong in a control or midrange deck I think that tools right now are enough. Maybe we will see more playability when UnGoro rotates out.
Double Lightwarden on board + This + Healing rain seems pretty fun
I think another card that needs to be mentioned when talking about this card is ancestral spirit. While at the moment the meta is very control oriented, in a more midrange meta, this combined with an earth elemental and ancestral spirit could make the usual crusher shaman into a much more explosive deck.
I think it’s more balanced than people think. It’s really good, don’t get me wrong, but it’s nothing overpowered.
Tell that to malygos shaman.
Malygos Shaman can’t really work right now, Shaman has no tools that let it regain mana or reliably discount Malygos (reliably because you could get lucky with a Far Sight, but that’s not reliable enough to make the deck viable), so your entire gameplan rests upon the enemy being unable to remove your Malygos, so you can play this minion and your burn spells next turn… Good luck with that plan.
Now, we obviously might get some tools that Malygos Shaman can use in this expansion, but that doesn’t change the fact that there aren’t any at the time of writing this comment, so you can’t use that in your argument either.
I can use anything I like in my argument. Anyone who disagrees with that argument is welcome to their own opinion as well; I’d just like to point out that being unwilling to follow an argument is not the same as debunking it. Eureka!
I agree 100% with you, Jed. It will see play, and be good, but I think people are forgetting about the fact that it requires quite the setup, and that it is a very weak play on curve.
Since nobody has mentioned it yet….
In wild, this turns Evolve into basically a second death knight
But cheaper
I’m more scared of bloodlust with this card other then the control stuff
It doesn’t fit in even shaman, so it may only be good for control stuff.
What does Bloodlust have to do with Even Shaman?
Bloodlust can’t be played in Even Shaman either. He’s probably talking about some Token Shaman deck. I mean, that archetype was big a ~year ago, so it might come back with some more tools.
Blizzard is kinda terrified of giving Shaman good 1 and 2 drops, because they really only need like two of those to run away with the game, since they have tools like flametongue totem. We haven’t seen a single aggressive shaman 1 or 2 drop since the previous rotation, when we lost Tunnel Trogg and Totem Golem, and even without new good 1 and 2 cost minions, Token Shaman was the best agro deck for a while.
Hmmm casting Earthen Might on him self for a +4+4 & 2 random elementals.
How does this work with Brann? Does the spell cast 4 times?
Of course not. If the text said:” Your next spell in this turn is cast one more time” then it would have worked, nut it just says twice soooooo……………
this doubles a spell. brann doubles a battlecry. can’t have both at the same time
This card is obviously ridiculously powerful, and it kind of scares me. On the one hand, using it with Lightning Storm/Far Sight/Healing Rain seems like a cool way of building a Control Shaman. On the other hand, that “Control Shaman” is really Shudderwock Shaman, and I don’t love the idea of that deck having access to Reno-lite. And that’s not even getting into an unblockable 10 damage from Lava Burst if you decide to go that route instead. Yuck.
This is a very good Control Shaman card to combo AOE removal with. It can also be a sort of finisher when used with Lava Burst since targeted spells should hit the same target twice, getting ten damage for six mana. Combined further with Murmering Elemental, it could be a 8 mana 15 damage combo if that works as I think it should.
This will see play at some point.
Given the wording on the card (“casts twice”), I doubt that this card will synergize with Murmuring Elemental/Brann Bronzebeard. That being said, I could definitely see some burst potential in this card, even if it’s at the cost of being able to do things on your next turn due to Overload. Maybe some sort of Control/Burst-style deck using this card, Zola for extra copies, etc will see play? Either way, this is a solid card that I can picture seeing play from the moment the set drops.
Yeah. This card being playable is hardly in doubt. It’s more so whether this will be solid or really annoying to play against.
i m quite sure that targeted spells won’t trigger on the same target twice, the second one will be chosen randomly as it is with all “targeted effects that are done by the AI and not cast by you”
They do. murmering elemental + ice shard will freeze the same target twice.
plus they usually state in the card text if the second target is random
Must have for every shaman deck, even in wild. 3 mana cost is great, efect very powerfull and versatile. Auto craf for me.
Shaman in wild is 90% even shamans right now though
This + Bloodlust or This + some burst can be really cool!
+the versatility of playing it with boardclears, rockbiter, feral spirit, healing rain, maybe even far sight (if it ebcomes a staple in shudderwhock or any other comboshamandeck)
the potential is there to make this the new brann, i like that it s in shaman as shaman has quite some mediocre spells. i guess they ll give shaman one or two good untargetted spells to improve this legendary.
