Duskfallen Aviana Card Review

I thought that it’s some kind of April Fools joke, but no, it’s real. This card reminds me of another – Millhouse Manastorm. You know why no one plays it, despite it having the best 2-drop stats in the entire game? The reason is simple – it can lose you the game on the spot.

And this card is exactly like that. Remember that after playing this, you’ve already played your first card that turn. It means that you don’t get that effect right away. But you know who does? Your opponent.

Their first card will cost 0 mana. Which means that yes, exactly, they can play a big drop for no cost at all, and then possibly even remove this minion. If you play vs another Control or Midrange deck, they will most likely have a way to clear it while also getting lots of free tempo. For example, they might drop some expensive minion first for 0 mana and then use the rest of their mana for a removal. They might turn into the DK first and then remove it (imagine Mage getting a Jaina DK for free on Turn 5-6…).

This feels better in Aggro matchups, but not by a huge margin. They still get to act first, so they can e.g. drop a Spellbreaker for free and then continue their turn like usual. They might be able to kill it with a weapon/minions on the board, and if they can, it’s like you’ve played a 5 mana 3/7 Taunt that gave them some free mana. The best case scenario for you is when they can’t kill it and you have a huge bomb in your hand, or when they’re topdecking and would play the card they get anyway.

I just can’t find any use for it. Yes, sometimes it’s going to win you the game if your opponent can’t abuse the effect AT ALL, but 9/10 times you will come out behind when playing it.

This is a meme card at best, but it’s not even a good meme card, because it’s not particularly fun or innovative.

Card rating: 1/10

    Hmm, let’s see..
In wild: Duskfaller Aviana -> (on your turn) the original Aviana -> put some big minions and the last one Kun and again put some big minions. Or some combo with Malygos and after Kun.
I think the idea of this card is to can put the original Aviana faster, at 6 mana or something.

      Correction Duskfaller Avian into Aviana.

      April 2, 2018 at 4:58 AM

And maybe there is some synergy with the druid weapon from kobolds & catacombs.
Having a card to cost 0 is something very powerful, don’t underestimate it especially that is on druid which has alot of ways to get mana fast. You said that Keleseth is a bad card, wait until someone finds a combo with this card.

It says first card in each turn…this card took that spot so until your next turn, the effect that would benefit you doesn’t take place. Take the Pint-Sized Summoner as an example

      • Wow
        April 2, 2018 at 5:18 AM

Well yeah, that’s what I mean.
If you’re lucky and this card survives on the board until your turn, you can make some sick combos.

Honestly I can see this being great against Aggro. Clear their board, drop this around turn 6 or 7when their hand is empty as well as their board, then you Maly-Faceless burst them out of nowhere, many turns before you would’ve had the full Aviana/Kun Combo.

That being said though, this is basically a dead card against control, and horrendous against a combo deck. So idk.

    • Brady Lynch
      April 2, 2018 at 6:21 AM

Yeah but at that point after you’ve cleared their board and they are out of cards in hand and board and youre druid, shouldn’t you win anyway?

Frankly, if you can waste your turn on this sub-par minion against aggro, you’ve already won.

I honestly beli this is some april fools joke. Some nameless harpy to be the druid legendary they could have at least gave her a name. 5 mana pint size summoner with bonus effect that helps your oponent. I mean its cho’gall value unplayable, that was the only legendary that i dusted and i dont regret it. Now of course the idea about blood magic warlock is really tempting and sounds cool the lack of ultimate infestation-like spell kills it and it will never be playable in stadard.

The same problem is with this card its a ramp druid support card and ramp druid is gone. You can add it to your ramp deck but there is still a chance your oponent takes advantage since the new meta introdused some crazy 9 mana cards for the control classes like obsidian statue and void lords whitch as druid you cant outvaluenot to mention you are potentially giving your oponent a free turn of their lich king before yours and the fact that as druid you dont have that much removal and astral tiger druid being the recruit version of the druid and the new tempo style hand druid i dont see this card making it to the meta.

The only viable strategy is that you can ramp mally and otk your oponent on turn 7 potentially that is if you are lucky with the draw (extremely kind of lucky)

  7. WildRage
    April 2, 2018 at 4:00 AM

This card could potentially work with a Deathrattle card that recruits a minion, similar to Grizzled Guardian but taylored to work with this card.
The obvious problem is that by the time you play Daskfaller Avian or recruit her through cards like Oaken Summons, you’ve already played your first card so her ability is useless until your next turn.
Even worst, you’ve actually allowed your opponent to use her ability before you, play a card for 0 cost and they probably removed her by the time your turn comes up.
This would have been fine if you could use her ability immediately after she’s summoned (I can’t really think of the appropriate wording for that), but this way it’s pretty bad. Maybe “The first card each player plays each turn, other than this card, costs 0 mana” would have made this card work. Actually, it would have been a decent card that unlocks a couple of combo decks. It would have been exceptional in Malygos Druid.

This card is clearly not too good. I give it 3/5 stars. But that being said, it is exactly a kind of card I like playing. Really looking forward to creating combos with this.

    • DyingHawk
      April 2, 2018 at 4:34 AM

You might not understand what this effect does. It is not a super pint-sized summoner. It allows your opponent to play the card first. This card is guaranteed to lose you the game unless your opponent has no cards over (4) cost in their hand or they have an empty hand. this is 5-mana lose the game. At which point this likely is not the card you want to play anyway. This is beyond shit, about 4 times worse than temporus, an already terrible card.

      • Infrapuna
        April 2, 2018 at 6:57 AM

Oh I very well understand it gives your opponent a HUGE advantage. Its part of why I am exited.

  9. valuemeister
    April 2, 2018 at 3:17 AM

You are not seeing the big picture here:
In wild you play Alarm-o-bot on turn 2 with coin –> Aviana comes out–> you play Kun and refresh the mana crystals –> replay Alarm-o-bot –> ??? –> value

    • Psycho
      April 2, 2018 at 4:13 AM

Aviana works only on your minions passively. This card works similarly to Pint-sized Summoner, it starts working only on the turn after you play it. Worse, it allows your opponent to use it before you, so you may give him a massive tempo swing by allowing him to play a big card for 0 and then playing a removal. It has potential, but like Dirty Rat and Bring it On, it will backfire from time to time

Agro will have board control. So they play their most expansive card for free and kill this after that…

  12. Soup And Salad
    April 2, 2018 at 2:26 AM

This can be good if you’re playing against aggro and they’ve pretty much run out of cards or really any deck that have run out of cards in the hand. That is a rather niche application, but I can see it happening if there’s ever a situation where Druid is the most value oriented deck out there.

Even though this will end up not seeing play unless the format shifts in one of the oddest ways imaginable, the game is better for there to be legendary card that are as interesting as this or Temporus. They may not see play, but they might stay in the back of you mind in a similar way the card “One with Nothing” tends to in the minds if Magic the Gathering players.

    • DyingHawk
      April 2, 2018 at 4:38 AM

playing against an aggro deck who doesn’t have board control and has no cards in hand is called winning the game. So yes, If you play this as your opponent is conceding you can win the game with it. I agree temporus is interesting and fun. But this is not, this loses you the game 99% of the time. Temporus probably does that 75% of the time. This isn’t even a fun card.

      • Soup And Salad

The game is still better for having this card within the game space than if it never existed.

    April 2, 2018 at 1:29 AM

I don’t think this card is as bad as it looks.

The first thought is you could combo with ultimate infestation for free, and that’s insane power spike at turn 6. A high risk high reward card.

If you are playing against aggro decks, your opponent may save at most 4 mana, but you are gaining 8-10 mana value

    • DyingHawk
      April 2, 2018 at 4:40 AM

but this will die, the effect is not a battle cry. this is worse than millhouse. If this thing ever lives a turn you had already won the game anyway outside of arena.

  18. GlosuuLang
    April 2, 2018 at 1:05 AM

Oh, look, it’s a Temporus for Druid! Awesome effect which your opponent gets to exploit earlier, thus probably leading you to lose the game. If at least you could give it Stealth for a turn, it would work in the Malygos Druid. As it is, your opponent will play a card for 0 the next turn and make sure you don’t have this minion or its effect by the next turn. 2 out of 5 stars, meme legendary, but like Temporus, it could be exploited in the future if you can get around its drawback (so far unlikely).

  19. HotCola
    April 2, 2018 at 1:05 AM

It might seems bad, but if you ramp and play it at turn 3 or 4 and play Tyrantus on turn 4-5, each pretty much over. (not to mention Witching Hour <3 )

You know what I’m noticing druids are getting So many BAD CARDS in this expation. Also, this is just MY opinion, But why have the Druid class been getting the most nerfs In Patches. I told my friend that I haven’t played Druid Sence the launch of the Mean Streets Of Gadgetzand because that was the last expansion that I liked/ loved their cards. But with recent exceptions, they just don’t have any fun or interesting cards. well besides a couple of cards but overall I have been having more fun with the other classes ( except Priest Fuck that class).

Just a weird design. You could design cards like this for games where you can make plays during your opponent’s turn, but in Hearthstone?

    This is crap.

If only Druid had an effect like Skull of the Man’ari to cheat this out. Then you could abuse her.

Might work nice with the 0/3 that switches places with a minion in your hand at beginning of your turn but even then it would be clunky and unreliable.

  24. af
    April 2, 2018 at 12:19 AM

I wonder what the designer was thinking while making this card? It is mind blowingly awkward.

    • Spoon
      April 2, 2018 at 12:24 AM

I’m curious to know how this card actually interacts when it is played out. Since it IS the first card you play, it’s effect won’t activate and you’ll pay out the 5 mana for a mediocre minion at best. OR it could be a “pay 5 for this and 0 for UI” the turn it is played. Hoping the latter isn’t true. Seems like a fun pseudo-taunt to have though 🙂

      • Killer Lord
        April 2, 2018 at 12:35 AM

You probably pay the 5 mana, and every card you play after isn’t the first card anymore. Just like pint-sized summoner. If you play her, the minion you play after her has it’s regular cost, and not a reduced one

  25. WaqTheWalker
    April 2, 2018 at 12:13 AM

Aggro can just play their biggest minion on their turn and silence this minion. XD

  26. Gamerdude
    April 2, 2018 at 12:02 AM

Why can’t this card be a 8 mana 2/7 that says the first card YOU play each turn costs zero. What I am reading right now is the next card your opponent plays cost zero and they discard a removal spell for five mana

    • DyingHawk
      April 2, 2018 at 4:43 AM

this is a great idea. Blizzard probably created this one at a drunken new years party and never playtested it or used a single brain cell thinking about it.

  27. Astramir
    April 1, 2018 at 11:56 PM

I think it’s a fake for two reasons. It’s not on Blizz’s official spoilers gallery [1], and it’s got a common title. Legendaries are characters with real namesakes.

Afterthought: plus the art doesn’t have that ‘legend’ feel, imo.

It’s not fake, it was leaked via the Korean Blizzard press area (where it has since been removed). Blizzard’s official spoilers gallery is updated slowly (and rarely done on weekends), and because it was leaked it wouldn’t be added there.

Alright so don’t get me wrong the art is cool and the affect can lead to some combos but I think twig may fill this role better. This card let’s your opponent take advantage of the effect first so say you are going against a controll warlock they play a voiddaddy for free and then they get remove it with a siphon soul. Much like the one six each player draws at the end of your turn it gives your opponent aadvantage over you if the affect.

    • DyingHawk
      April 2, 2018 at 4:45 AM

no it is that bad, in fact it’s worse. against some decks millhouse can survive and you then have a crazy turn two body. This will NEVER survive against anything you haven’t already won against and it will lose you the game.

well, not that i need anything for my combo druid in wild, but still sucks to watch this reveal.

      April 1, 2018 at 10:15 PM

Wrong, this has to be alive because the effect is not battlecry. So you opponent just play his free card then kill this, very easy for a control deck to do that on turn 6

Hello again guys. Im assuming you all forgot that Malygos will love this card. WIth the Twig weapon, you are basically receiving 2 turns in one with a card like this. Its a stretch but control is a thing now and i see this card being very useful. Im open to other opinions…

    • Orasha
      April 1, 2018 at 9:42 PM

It’s just too easy to remove. Aggro decks might not be able to remove it, and they benefit less from the effect, but against aggro you don’t need to kill them with the Malygos combo, since you can just run them out of resources. And if they can’t get rid of a 3/7, they definitely can’t remove a 4/12. Control decks are where you really care about the OTK, and Control decks WILL have a way to remove this card, and their removal has the potential to be FREE the next turn.

At least Temporus is guaranteed to give you 2 turns, even if it dies…

      • Random Dude
        April 4, 2018 at 2:39 AM

Yeah, but most Aggro by turn 5 is either:
        A. in the lead (and can push for final/sufficient face with Aviana’s notable help)
        B. losing

It’s not uncommon for Aggro to deal 10 face dmg by turn 3. Matches against fast decks tend to be already leaning towards a resolution mid-game, in whichever direction. Receiving a massive tempo gain on T5/6 is pretty much “Kick me as hard as you can, if I’m still standing by next tur-… OW!”,

        – So no, I don’t see it against Aggro (unless they run out of cards by then, but that’s universal).
        – Against Tempo it’s ridiculous, since it actually produces a tempo gain for the Op.
        – Against Control, which by definition has sufficient removal tools, it’s a free play for the other guy.

Maybe if this had Taunt. But I still see it removed or silenced after a big, free play from your Op. And even if it lives by your next turn, you’re too busy dealing with whatever was put on the board thanks to it.

It’ll win you some games. It’ll lose you more.

    • Wywern
      April 2, 2018 at 3:11 AM

There is no way this card doesnt get removed on turn 5, expecting it to live on 10 is just delirious. This thing isn’t even useful against aggro or other decks that run out of cards, since if you can waste your turn on this, you’ve already won.

You do realize that your opponent gets the first free card. So you play this, they play a free legendary or UI or something of that nature, then remove her, and just get free value.

This card is pure Krapp. It enables opponent combo before yours, cost 5 and it’s so fucking removable.
The best scenario you will encounter is: turn 5 duskfellah, opponent turn, legendary + removal=gg
