I think people are underestimating this card a bit. It’s not always great, I know, but I could see it showing up in some big decks. Pulling any of the 9+ dragons would be incredible, and your opponent has to deal with a high-health minion while also killing this one or it’ll pull another big dragon. Even getting primordial drake off this wouldn’t be awful as it can protect the fragile 2/4 body against minions and weapons so it has a chance of going off again. Even if your opponent does manage to remove this and the big dragon, they’ve had to either trade with minions that then aren’t going to your face and possibly killing off the minions, or they’ll have to use removal or burn that they won’t have later.

Not a generally great card, but I do think people are missing out on the kind of deck where this card could potentially shine.

Awful card!!! I mean its cost…
BlizZard should make it cost 4-5 mana then it would be playable in some decks.

4-5 mana for pulling a 9-10 mana dragon from your deck? Crazy op.

Playable in maly rogue with the new minion that summons a 1/1 from your hand. You can arrange so it’s either this guy or maly then shadowstep it for combo turn. I think it’s niche but finding a way to cheat that thing lets you dig out your big dragon you rely on consistently. It has a place I’m sure

It would return to your hand with its full stats if you shadowstep it.
Better would be if you traded in the minion that summons a 1/1 from your hand on the turn you wanted to do your combo, or played an eviscerate on it. That way you can control when it comes down and make it cost much less, 0 or 2.

Alternatively you can play the card that adds the 1/1 to your hand the turn you trade in the guy. You summon a copy of maly from your hand, then you razorpetal it, and then you have a permanently 1/1 copy of it. If you can pull this off again with the other 1/1 copy that makes another 1/1 copy, then you’re set.

Also you can use the card that makes a 1/1 copy to summon a 1/1 copy of the legendary and then do this combo for cheap later.

I’m noticing this card isn’t coming up in any of these combos. That’s because it’s bad.

This is really poor design. At 9 mana you have to be pulling something 9+ to be worth it. But even then your not getting any discount for playing this, you would just rather play the dragon. Blizzard was too scared this card could be broken but they overshot and made it unplayable. Would be much better if it pulled from a narrower group like 6 or less mana dragons or non legendary dragons, etc. Then the stats wouldn’t have to be such garbage.

No deck will want this, you’ll be sad to evolve into it, 0/5 will dust.

    • Just think about barnes... free dragons seems broken when it happens

Is this just blizzards way of making random 9 drops worse? Cause i cant see any over reason why blizzard is printing low stat, high cost cards

    Hmmmmm…..

Gasp, I got it! All i need is meat wagon, abusive sargeant, and shadow word pain and this card will be great in dragon priest….now how do i ensure that i can even pull this off or draw the right cards….
Oh right, i can’t, because not even that strategy is worth it

It is, but y’sharaj recruits a random minion while this recruits a dragon. Dragons are usually pretty big.

im going to try this with meat wagon in paladin deck give wagon 2 attack then put deathwings ysera something like that to your deck and if as planned turn 5 or 6 you have this and deathwing also if your opponent doesnt deal with this you get another dragon

I feel like the recruit mechanic itself is bing a bit underrated. (Similar to that of life steal I the previous expansion) this makeshift hearthstone much more interesting on a deck building level of play. I honestly don’t see the problem with this card compared to that of the 7 3/3 (which I do believe is absolutely horrible. You get near instant value with an immediate threat on board with deathwing, ysera etc. plus a 2/4 body meaning they need to either focus on the removal of the 2/4 to stop your value or that of your dragon. Again, y shraaj may be better but it requires a certain deck building style to pull off. This only needs big dragons, everything else can be built to work around this which is completely competetively acceptable. 4/5

Big Priest, maybe Big Druid? I dunno how else this is good. Will be trying in Wild with Drakkari Enchanter + Thaurissan for the memes.

Don’t think of this as a 9-mana 2/4, think of it as 9-mana for whatever dragon you run. Decks that run Malygos in particular (and require that Maly gets dropped a turn before instead of dropping Maly and OTK’ing in the same turn) would be much more consistent since you essentially have 3 Maly’s if you run 2x Dragonhatcher, and decks that just run big dragons such as both Deathwings and Ysera (to a lesser extent since you do not immediately get the effect) would also see decent ups in playing this card. Primordial Drake, although generally worse value than the aforementioned cards, will protect your Dragonhatcher and possibly get another proc.

Also obvious synergy with Drakkari Enchanter, and could be seen as a second Y’Shaarj in Barnes Big Priest (for dragons specifically). And some fun with NINJA NOZDORMUUUU! (since your opponent will have less time to prepare for Noz if it randomly emerges from your deck).

    • TardisGreen
      December 1, 2017 at 1:42 PM

Recruit mechanic pulls the card from your deck. So you would NOT “essentially have 3 Maly’s”.

      • Helioshadow
        December 1, 2017 at 1:52 PM

In a deck that relies on dropping Maly and killing them a turn later, 2x Dragonhatcher would allow them more chances on getting Maly on the field as opposed to Maly being the bottom card in their deck. So technically, 3 cards that siphon Maly from deck (including Maly). I know what recruit does; no need to explain 😀

        • Blimey
          December 1, 2017 at 2:58 PM

Haven’t heard of a “a deck that relies on dropping Maly and killing them a turn later”.
A win condition that depends on your opponent being gracious enough to leave its centerpiece intact on the board for your next turn is not a viable deck building strategy.

So the only way to make 100% sure that it survives until your next turn, is to have two turns in a row.

Before this expansion that wasn’t even a thing to consider. Now in theory you could do something like that as a priest with Temporus, but that doesn’t seem too smart, considering that you’d still depend on drawing one unique dragon naturally (and most importantly, before your other unique dragon, or otherwise this whole grand scheme doesn’t work anymore).

            December 1, 2017 at 5:29 PM

I read of a Hunter deck before that relied on the opponent not killing Maly, and tbh any Standard deck that wants to use Maly (besides Rez Priest) needs to rely on Maly living a turn. And honestly it isn’t hard; get a good board wipe with Maly + Prep > Fan of Knives or a decent Doomsayer and beyond a select few hard removal spells they aren’t going to be able to kill Maly.

    • Chamim
      December 1, 2017 at 4:46 PM

I don’t think you know what recruit means. It’s the effect from Y’Shaarj. You put the minion into play. If he pulls Maly then it’s your only Maly except you play big priest. It’s essentially a Y’Shaarj with a weak body with the upside of pulling specific minions

      • Helioshadow
        December 1, 2017 at 5:41 PM

I explained this in the other comment chain, but essentially if your opponent kills Maly, they would’ve been able to kill Maly anyways and the deck would’ve flopped. This dude simply gives you two more chances of Maly not being the bottom card of your deck and thus makes the deck more consistent at the cost of not being able to utilize Maly with the 1-mana you would’ve been able to use the turn you dropped Maly. Now in Wild you have quite a few ways to either hide Maly by ways of Conceal or have a lower-costing Maly with Ancestral Call, so it’s MUCH more rewarding to drop Maly with another card to abuse it either next turn or in the same turn and in THAT format sure this card is pretty trash. In Standard, however, you have to rely on either a ton of discounts and mana through coins, innervates, preps, etc. Or you let your opponent have a crack at Maly and see what they can do in an attempt to save their life, before blowing up their face the next turn. Now if you’re smart and baited the enemy removal and/or got rid of the board (or three down a bunch of taunts the previous turn through maybe Hadronox), then their chance at killing Maly is pretty small. Not impossible, but improbable.

Looks like they are really trying to add more low rolls, at the high end of the mana pool, for evolve shaman this expansion. Just seems to be screaming it with the amount of low stat high mana cards revealed so far.

WTH 2/4 in stats for a 9 drop? That is bad. The only way this is good is if you get some taunt dragons like primordial drake that let’s it survive for a turn so it can get two triggers off.
