As for the rng, you can’t freeze the same minion twice
therefore if you cast ice lance, frostbolt, cone of cold, attack with your water elemental, or drop frost elemental FIRST, you can fine tune your odds of freezing your intended target.

I think this card deserves another look

I have an Idea: a tempo mage that runs this guy, shatter, ice lances and frost novas, with a slew of aggro cards that your opponent might not be able to trade with.

Ice lance shatter could be a nice equivalent to slam execute, minus the draw.

U lost me at the word random. 2 stars is generous the stats are 2 mana stats. Not worth the random freez AFTER casting a spell. It might freez a minion multiple times.

Blizzard has confirmed that something that is already frozen cannot be frozen again, so it won’t hit anything that is already frozen.

Usually you dont need this freeze effect. Most of the freeze effects come with nova-doomsayer, or just blizzards. Those 2 cards have AOE freezes, this just randomly freezes 1 enemy. Id still much rather plqy my blizzards and novas to lock my enemy minions down rather than 1 random minion

I feel that mage is getting the short end of the stick for this expansion. The only good card so far is the faceless summoner. Both rares are terrible. The epics are very mehh. Why does mage always get the random effect kind of cards. Does blizzard want Casino Mage to be a thing???? PLEASE GIVE MAGE A GOOD LEGENDARY.

Not going to argue there but I think one reason is because Mage is already one of the best heroes IMO. Plus Archmage Antonidas is probably the best or second best class legend after Tirion. So the other classes have to catch up to Mage anyways. Plus the 5-5 battle cry get a 3-3 is possibly the best card previewed so far.

The thing is Antonidas is only very good in tempo mage or freeze mage. And both of those decks are not even top tier decks. (ok maybe you can argue that freeze mage might be a top tier deck but they are losing scientist). I feel like they need to release something really good to make mage a class with more variety. Mage is losing a lot of cards in standard (scientist, echo, portal, duplicate) and therefore a lot of mage decks are taking a big hit. Maybe I’m just biased because I main mage hahaha

A 2/4 for 4 mana minion is incredibly easy to remove. It’s effect is pretty weak, requires spells to activate and is influenced by RNG.. definitely a bad card no matter how you put it.

Either make it: “Freeze a random enemy at the end of your turn” or “After you cast a spell, Freeze two random minions.” (you lose the hit face, deny weapon value for 2 targets instead of 1)

A Heartstone card for Freeze mage.
Card like this depends on RNG to make it good.
Think of one situation where your opponent have a huge minion on the boards and you are dead next turn.
You can freeze the minion and fire blast two turns to win (opponent at 12 life or lower) or 50/50 you’re dead.
Also pretty good for 11 damage lethal turn 7 with Arcane Missile & 2x Ice Lance (open board).
    rate: 4****

i still prefer Water Elemental, more health, target what you want for free, same cost.

ok, you can’t freeze a protected minion by a taunt but thats why your deck is filled with removals.

you cant freeze the turn you play it however , if enemy has 1 minion or a lot of low hp ones , playing this followed by some board clear will disable him completely, i kinda like this card

General: It seems quite worse than the card “Flamewaker” which has a lower cost of 3 mana and has the same stats; also the ability to deal 2 damage is usually preferred over the freezing.

Constructed: given its ability it clearly looks like a fit for the freeze mage deck. In constructed, one is able to build a deck around this card, like you would do with “Flamewaker”, by including various spells. However on one side there is the problem of overlapping the effect with other spells, such as “Frost nova”. Also one can’t cast “Ice Lance” and hope for it deal the 4 damage, as the text states “AFTER you cast a spell”, therefore you might simply freeze the same enemy twice or two different ones but not deal the 4 damage. Nevertheless it can still help “Ice Lance” deal damage by casting it after you casted another spell. Over the course of the match this card can help you delay damage from the opponent’s side until you draw your finisher or AoE spell, which sounds pretty good, tho you will need some luck as the effect is random. Ultimately it’s quite a slow and unreliable minion.

Arena: It’ one of the worst cards you can get in Arena. The stats are very overpriced and spells are quite scarce when drafting. Don’t pick it…

I would argue that in a lot of circumstances that freezing a minion is much better than dealing 2 damage and this card was definitely not made for freeze mage it was made for a more tempo style mage maybe even a value mage with the new common 6mana 5/5

You definitely have a point, freezing keeps things a little more under control whereas dealing damage could trigger something that you didn’t want to. Yes, you’re right it suits a tempo mage more. Honestly these are all speculations by me since no one got to play it yet. It might actually turn out great or it might just be the way we thought, who knows; that’s why I rarely make any firm statement. Thanks for replying tho! 😀

This is 4 mana instead of 3 mana. Thats a HUGE difference between flamewaker and this. Playing this and some spells like arcane missiles to trigger its effect at 5 mana MIGHT give you some tempo if you freeze their minion. BUT if you freeze their face instead of their minion, you probably just lost all tempo and most likely the game.

3 mana would be a nice price for this guy. Also i hope he doesn’t target creatures that already frozen.

    • TacoRocco
      April 15, 2016 at 9:41 AM

It will target any enemy character, even if frozen. Otherwise it would state “freeze random unfrozen enemy”. If that were the case, it would probably be pretty good.

Don’t spread information you aren’t absolutely sure of. It has since been stated that it will not freeze frozen characters, making Frost Nova freeze all enemies.

he doesn’t target creatures that are frozen already, so this guy is fine on 4 mana since you can freeze someone’s board with lots of spells

Honestly, this one seems really bad. You’re spending 4 mana for only 2.5 mana worth of stats, and you get a random freeze effect that isn’t going to reliably hit the enemy you need to freeze. Not to mention you have to cast another spell to trigger it. If it froze all minions when you cast a spell, ala wild pyromancer, this might be some kind of threat to your opponent but as it is it feels weak, or at the least overcosted. Ice lance freezes a targeted minion (which is a stronger effect) only costs 1 mana, and has an additional effect to deal damage if its already frozen. With this card, you trade 1.5 mana away immediately and have to spend mana casting spells for an effect thats worth ~0.5 mana at best, even without using up a card. It doesn’t even have the potential to chain freeze a single minion, which might redeem it, because it can hit the enemy hero too. I guess at least it doesn’t hit your own board.
Definitely pales in comparison to flamewaker though, where you only trade in 0.5 mana initially for an effect thats worth about the same, and is arguably more likely to be useful in combination with your spells (after all, most of your cheap spells are already doing damage so flamewaker pushes for more to get leathal or clear the board).

Flamewaker’s new best friend. I like this card and I’m looking forward to playing with it in my new Summoner Stone mage deck.
