Cosmic Anomaly Card Review
Mage is getting some solid Spell Damage minions and synergies this expansion, and I like it. This card seems pretty powerful, but only in the right deck. You could say that technically since Evolved Kobold has seen play, this also might. But that was when Emperor Thaurissan was in play, and Kobold would be just as strong as this one in Freeze Mage, since it’s the Spell Damage part you cared about anyway.
Thanks to the body, however, this might see play in regular decks, unlike a 2/2 Kobold. 4/3 for 4 is still not great, but it’s a 3 mana worth of stats for 4 mana, not a ~1.5 mana of stats for 4 mana. 3 health is harder to take down than 2, and 4 attack means that it can pack some punch if it survives. It’s about as good as it can get on a +2 Spell Damage minion… Spell Damage is a pretty expensive mechanic. Like, remember cards like Spellweaver or Darkmire Moonkin? They’re way, way more severely under-statted than this one.
As for where it might be useful. Tempo Mage is the first candidate. The deck’s 4 mana slot is awkward right now, with Lifedrinker, which honestly isn’t the best card. Is this better? Hard to say. Right now I’d say they’re similar. On the one hand, Lifedrinker is guaranteed to deal 3 and heal for 3. This one isn’t, but as soon as you combo it with at least 2 spells, it deals more damage. Plus it has a better body. Not to mention that the spells can be used for board control – like 5 damage Frostbolt to clear some Taunt and keep your minions alive. That said, I feel like the deck would really need another cheap damage spell before really taking advantage of this effect.
The deck I could see this most useful in some kind of Spell Damage. A deck that specifically runs Spell Damage minions along cheap spells to make them much stronger. Just to give you an example – the new Shooting Star spell is perfect for this kind of build. 1 damage to 3 minions for 1 mana is okay, but 3 damage to 3 minions for 1 mana is bonkers. Same goes with something like a simple Arcane Explosion – it’s 3 AoE damage with +2 Spell Damage. Those kind of spells benefit most from Spell Damage. Too bad Arcane Blast is not in Standard, because it would be amazing with this card too. That’s the main problem I see – not enough cheap, damage spells. But we still have a few cards left to be revealed, so there is still some chance that we’ll get another one.
Overall, the card definitely has lots of potential. It’s +2 Spell Damage on a solid body, with an Elemental tag. It will see play sooner or later. Might not be now, because it feels too slow for the Burn Mage, and the Spell Damage build is not fleshed out enough yet.
Card rating: 8/10
some genuinely interesting info , well written and loosely user friendly.
Four stars for this card’s card art.
Four stars for this card and its potential usage.
Compared to ogre magi, this card is bonkers.
for 1 less health, you get an extra spell damage and the elemental tag.
A good card for discovering, but not to put into a constructed deck
Is a pretty ok yep I’m a deck that supports it I give
4/5
Would be garbage in basically any other class, but Mage has a lot of really cheap things to combo with this. It’s a turn 5 4/3 launch 5 Arcane Missiles, or alternatively Shooting Star for 3. Seems solid, could see it in either tempo or Elemental control. Doesn’t fit in Big Spell Mage at all though.
Wouldn’t it be quite good in druid and rouge? evolved Kobold was teched in at some point in yogg druid, and rogue would just love the spell damage to go with their fans, backstabs, etc.
Blizzard has refused to give aggro/midrange mage a 4 drop for over 3 years of the existence of this game maybe this card will do something as a 4 drop??????
Flamewaker?
flamewaker … the 3 mana card?
Blackrock Mountain (BRM) is Hearthstone’s second adventure, released April 2/3, 2015
…….
3 years ago been in wild for a while mage hasent had a damn thing at the 3 and 4.
At least mage has mana wyrm tho at 1 hunter dosent have a thing
Dire mole my dude
This makes that kobold spell damage card look terrible. There’s a lot you can do with spell damage +2. And decent body. Will see play
I think it’s a one of in Burn Mage. So it’s between 3.5 and 4 out of 5. I don’t know about other viable Mage archetypes that want to play it, yet.
Not really sure if it counts as power creep since class cards should be better than neutrals. This card could be nice and provide extra burst for tempo mage (or even a resurgance of Freeze Mage). It’s probably better then Life Drinker, though it is worse on curve. I’m also unsure whether Freeze Mage will actually be able to work (it’s seen some fringe play in high legend), especially because Druids can casually gain 30 armor in a game.
I don’t really think a Tempo Mage would want to play this too much. It is a little expensive during the early and midgame.
Evolved Kobold did see play occasionally in control decks with classes like Shaman since the best AOE damage spell they had at the time was Lightning Storm. This can be comboed with stuff like Arcane Explosion, which costs six mana and you might as well use a Blizzard instead, and the new Shooting Star, which can be a decent play. The three health on this card basically means you have to play it with something to be able to get anything from it a lot of the time.
This is decent, but I’m unsure if Mage would really want to play it.
I dont see it being played on curve, it just wont stay on the board… maybe it will be useful mid game…
It’s highly unlikely to stay on the board for more than one turn so you’d need spells that are cheap enough to play on the same turn…
Biggest buffs would be on AoE spells like Arcane Explosion or Shooting Star (or Meteor for the total overkill?) but it could turn Arcane Missiles into Cinderstorm … or you could drop 2x Cinderstorm on the same turn for 14 damage.
But if we’re thinking Elemental Mage the most likely spells are Frostbolt, Flame Geyser and Blizzard; Jaina on 9 to Cosmic Anomaly > Blizzard on 10 could be a pretty strong comeback… especially as the Anomaly gains Lifesteal.
I can see why they moved Ice Lance to wild. This plus Celestial Emissary plus Frost Bolt, Ice Lance, Ice Lance = 23 burst!
A. 19 not 23. Why do people refuse to read cards before talking about them. Celestial Emissary very clearly saying +2 to only the next spell.
B. That would be a difficult combo to pull off, and would definitely not be broken.
C. You think they moved ice lance to HOF because of some cards they were going to release a year and a half later?
Oops, my bad 😀
19 is still pretty good, though!
I think they move most cards to the hall of fame to open up more possibilities for new expansions but, yes, I doubt it was specifically because of this expansion. I didn’t mean to imply that.
All I’m saying is that this sort of card is great with Ice Lance in Wild. No need to get so nitpicky 😛
Hello, my name is Evolved Kobold. This card has +2/+1 in stats plus an Elemental Tag for the same cost and the same Spell Damage +2. Not to forget that I was rarely seen in competitive play, except in a deck called Freeze Mage. So yeah, forget about my existence and gaze at this power creep. 4/5 stars, this is strong in any Mage archetype that runs spells that do damage, so except Murloc Mage, pretty much everything. Maybe only as a one-of in Aluneth Aggro Mage, but I definitely see this replacing Lifedrinker in that deck.
Except class cards are supposed to be stronger than neutral cards, thus this doesn’t count as power creep. Not to mention Evolved Kobold rotated to Wild. Try again next time.
Lul what? So just because it’s a class card, it means it deserves a +2/+1 and a highly synergistic tag? Alright, I’ll be wanting a 3 mana 7/3 Beast for Hunter. Ice Rager is a terrible card, so this is not power creep, besides Ice Rager already rotated to Wild. Yes, see me combining Tundra Rhino + this card for pure Smorc enjoyment. I think it’s you who should try again, buddy.
well its too slow. Just like shifting shade was too slow for priest and priest did hav ebetter survival tools than mage. They have the same stat line on a 3 drop Kirin tor mage and kirin tor mages give you a extra 3 mana, if you have a secret, worth of value. spell dmg + 2 not bad but insuficient. It is like evolved cobold. And people used to run one of those just becouse its you double regular cobolds into one card that is a combo enabler and a deck quish so i don;t see people running more than one like the cobolds.
And if you have the board presence and you paly thins it is just going to die the next turn anyway. So shifting shade used to give you at least something in return for its weakness.
“Just like shifting shade was too slow for priest”
You’re new to Hearthstone aren’t you.
Excellent card.
I can see this getting play in lots of tempo decks. This works even if the opponent has a wall of taunts. Shove a Fireball and Frostbolt (very common to have one of each towards the end) after it for +4 face dmg at the end, that’s HUGE. This effectively can be used as an AOE boost vs aggro or additional face dmg. Also will tank and effectively offset 3+ damage towards the end as it MUST be removed. Great card 5/5 for me.
peerc rewop BACKWARDS
but seriously evolved kobold saw some play in freeze mage and (even though ice lance is gone) i think this could be really nice in that deck
It’s a straight upgrade in basically everything.
Evolved Kobold but better. It depends a little bit if Mage will be able to fit spell damage cards into their deck, but if so, this is going to be their first choice.
4/5
+2/+1 and elemental tag for ZERO mana, seems legit… or not?
Why do you say “for zero” mana ?
Because of Evolved Kobold, a tribeless four mana 2/2 with spelldamage +2, from Whispers of the Old Gods.
Sure, I was thinking about another Kobold… my mistake…
First? OP
