Chief Inspector Card Review
I like the fact that they constantly keep some kind of anti-Secret tech in Standard. First it was Kezan Mystic, then Eater of Secrets and now this. I honestly think that this card is better than Eater of Secrets. Even though Eater was already a 4/6 (for 4, not 5!) just after destroying two Secrets, in most of the matchups it was simply a 4 mana 2/4. 5 mana 4/6 base stats are better, since the card is playable (yes, it’s bad, but also playable) in the matchups which don’t play Secrets.
It’s clearly a tech choice. If you face Secret decks, you can consider putting it. It’s a bit similar to the Skulking Geist in a way – 4/6 mid game body that is vanilla in most of the matchups, but can work wonders in certain 2 or 3 matchups you face on the ladder. I’m quite sure that if the meta will demand it, it will see play. But will it? Ice Block is rotating out, and it was the most common Secret you’ve ever teched against. Right now I don’t think it will be played, but maybe in the future expansions. It’s always good to have some kind of way to counter Secrets available in the game in case a deck like that takes off and becomes high tier.
Oh, and it’s also a good Arena card. Eater of Secrets was bad, because it was nearly unplayable if it didn’t hit anything. This can be dropped on the curve without really losing you the game, and it can potentially get extra value in some matchups.
But to be fair, I think that they should just add one of those cards to the Classic set and be done with it instead of reprinting similar cards over and over again.
Card rating: 7/10 tech card
RIP ICE BLOCK
thats this cards only use and that card rotated out
Anyone giving this more than 2/5 is crazy. With the rotation of Mages Secrets package and Hunters moving towards a more MidRange Minion base, as well as Rogues getting zero Secret support this expansion, this is nothing better than a vanilla 4/6 for 5.
In Wild it’s a worse Eater Of Secrets. Bleugh…
We will have to see the meta I geuss.
I would however choose this over Eater Of Secrets if they both popped-up next to warsong commander in an Arena draft
If you include Eater of Secrets in Wild, you’re targeting Secret Paladin or Secret Mage. Against THOSE specific decks, yes, EoS is better. But against ALL THE OTHER decks that don’t include secrets, Chief Inspector is better. So no, it’s not worse on average than Eater of Secrets. Can definitely find a place in Aggro/Midrange decks that want to put minion pressure and still have tech against secrets. Besides, you never know when a new Secret deck will rise in the meta in the following two years, so we DO need a Secret tech, and this IS a good one.
It’s a bog standard responsive tech card to potentially deal with future threats to the meta game. It could see play if Spell Hunters are still running around, but those secrets tend to trigger really rather easily and are often gone by the time this would hit the board. Unfortunately, the primary target for a card like this, Ice Block, will no longer be in standard, and in Wild, Eater of Secrets will come out earlier and have better stats for its cost.
In Wild – unless it’s secret Paladin – you can play around the lesser secrets then drop a Kazan Mystic to steal the Ice Block, without being hindered by such a bad statline as EoS against decks that don’t run secrets.
I like it. There obviously needed to be some kind of Eater of Secrets replacement and I FAR prefer this approach. Eater of Secrets was either incredibly good when it hit, or incredibly bad if it whiffed, which meant it saw very little play even when several classes were running secrets and secrete generators. This is a perfectly acceptable statline even if it’s not doing anything, which makes it far more appealing to add to a deck. This is the power level I want tech cards to be at in a game with no sidedecking; it joins Blood Knight, Mind Control Tech, Golakka Crawler, Acidic Swamp Ooze, etc, rather than being so polarizing it’s unplayable.
this card is 2/5 at best. why?
because ice block is rotating out anyway. With no other op secrets this xpac there is literally no reason to waste a slot for this.
^
Eater of Secrets 2.0.
Welp, finally some good Secret counter
Eater was secret was actually good against secrets, but only against secrets, it was awful if it didn’t eat a secret or two because of the bad stats, and usually you’d play it to counter things like Ice Block, and since you wouldn’t want to run 2 Eaters in a deck you’d use it on a turn you had lethal, making the stats gains even less meaningful
Vanilla 5 mana 4/6 is not the best thing ever, but it is still decent enough that it won’t make your deck/plays worse by simply including it
It would be pretty annoying to have this be played against you i suppose tho secrets are annoying enough that it’s okay. Also good replacement for secret eater, and okay statted
Good card to replace Secrets Eater
OK, we FINALLY get a good anti-Secret tech. This is waaaay better than Eater of Secrets, since a vanilla 4/6 for 5 is MILES ahead better than a vanilla 2/4 for 4-mana. Still, it’s a tech card, and Secret Mage and Secret Hunter have lost support in this expansion and will probably not be around in Standard. In WILD, however, this is great to tech in, seeing as you still run into Mysterious Challenger and Secret Mage is a T1 deck there. Giving this 4/5 stars.
Oh yes! would be better with 4 mana but i am glad for this ..
A 4/6 for 4 mana is even better than Chillwind Yeti.
I was hoping it didn’t exist but now it’s here
