Bellringer Sentry Card Review
It’s like a toned down version of Mysterious Challenger. However, the “toned down” doesn’t mean “bad”. Challenger was pretty broken when it worked, but this is still very good… in the right deck.
One thing to keep in mind that Mysterious Challenger was in Standard for a whole other year (2016) before it finally rotated out in 2017. But he didn’t see almost any play during Year of the Kraken. Why? Because not only was Avenge, arguably the most powerful Secret, rotated out, but the deck has also lost early game tools like Shielded Minibot and Muster for Battle.
The “early game tools” part is somewhat fixed. Paladin’s early game is solid right now, maybe not Minibot & Muster good, but good enough. But lack of good Secrets is still a problem. Right now, after Getaway Kodo rotates out, Paladin will have exactly 4 Secrets in Standard – Eye for an Eye, Noble Sacrifice, Redemption and Repentance. Eye for an Eye is obviously bad, Repentance is very meta-dependent… So we’re basically left with Noble Sac and Redemption, and neither of those is really, really strong.
On the other hand, it’s a 4 mana 3/4 that tutors AND plays two cards from your deck. This part is insanely strong. You pay one extra mana (because those are 3-drop stats) and your payback is worth much more.
Right now I have mixed feelings about this, because the effect is very powerful, but no Avenge or other powerful Secrets makes it much worse. You’d realistically need to put like 4-5 Secrets into your deck to make it work consistently (if you put 2-3, you’d draw them before this too often), and we might just not have enough good Secrets.
If a strong Paladin Secret gets revealed, I could see this being played in lots of Aggro/Midrange lists. With the current pool, I’m not sure. Still, the card has lots of potential – remember that it will be in Standard for the next 2 years, and it’s just waiting for a good Paladin Secret.
Card rating: 6/10 right now, 8/10 if a good Secret gets revealed.
Bellringer Angel says, “DING DONG DING DONG!”
This card is only as good as the Paladin secrets it can pull out, and without Getaway Kodo, there aren’t enough good secret to make playing this worth it at the moment.
In six months when a couple new and decent secrets have been created, then this card will be great.
Aya Blackpaw reincarnated for Paladin. Only instead of Jade, it’s secrets. From “Runaway Kodo” to “Noble Sacrifice,” this is a card to make Secret Paladin work. If the right cards are in play, including the Murloc Explorer.
If they print any aggro secret, maybe you will see this guy. However, right now is probably trash. Of course, playing this on curve with battlecry redemption and deathrattle get down, then redemption triggers, you get a 3/1 “divine shield” because of get down and when it dies you get get down again, but that’s super optimistic and unlikely.
3/5 now, but 4.5/5 if they make better secrets
I actually see this as a good way to thin out the deck paired with C2A to get to critical cards quickly. With Blackwald Pixie and Rebuke also added OTK Paladin may still be a playable list.
Who am I? None of your business?
Who am I? I’LL SHOW THEM ALL!
Is this Blizzard’s way of saying that Mysterious Challenger was busted? That card was only one stat below vanilla, and it pulled up to 5 different secrets in your deck, thinning it and making the oponent very uncomfortable of playing their next turn. This is two stats below vanilla, and only pulls two secrets from your deck… one with a delay! So it’s obviously muuuuch weaker and I don’t think you would want to put Paladin secrets in your deck (which already cost you a card) just to get value out of this. I do see this however in a Secret Paladin deck in Wild, as a substitution of Mad Scientist (that deck normally runs one Scientist, maybe now they run one of these guys). So, it’s not totally useless competitively… 2/5 stars.
A card that is only much weaker than Mysterious Challenger is still rather strong given how Mysterious Challenger enabled a brand new and format dominating deck pretty much all on its own. This won’t ever recreate Secret Paladin by itself but it will be an important piece for the deck when it comes back around with a couple new secrets and another higher cost secret synergy card.
Plus Secret Paladin has never really left Wild. That’s how strong Challenger is.
Mysterious Challenger was so strong that Blizzard even printed the hate card Eater of Secrets to try and counter it, pretty much like it printed Skulking Geist to counter Jade Druid (another busted mechanic with Jade Idol).
Yeah, I agree that if a secret like Avenge is printed in this or in other expansions, this card could be good in Standard. The problem is that the four secrets from Paladin in Classic are quite lack luster. They’re good when discovered from Hydrologist because they don’t cost a card and you can get the one that best fits the situation. But this doesn’t combine with Hydrologist, and I don’t think we can get a combo in the level of Noble Sac + Avenge + Competitive Spirit like it usually happens in Secret Paladin.
If a new good secret is printed, I will change my judgment from 2/5 to 3.5/5.
Eater of Secrets was not why Secret Paladin fell off the map. If it was, Secret Paladin would’ve come and gone throughout Old Gods format as play of Eater of Secrets ebbed and flowed. You are right about this card’s quality being directly tied to quality of Paladin secrets and without at least more secrets on the same level as Avenge, Getaway Kodo, and Noble Sacrifice, this is unlikely to see play.
This card still pulls out two low value cards out of your deck straight onto the board, improving your future draws. When secret Paladin comes back in some form or another, this will end up being one of the better cards in it.
At first glance I kinda like it. Unlike mysterious challenger you don’t have to fill your deck with secrets, just a choice couple. I would put in 2 redemptions, and I think 2 other secrets, and that’s it. Mysterious challenger meant you had high chances of pulling bad secrets all the time, but this guy just has high value. I would say better than hydrologist.
It’s funny because as you got battlecry redemption he comes back to life, then when he dies he resurrects again and all random shenanigans…
I like it. When u Play it on turn 4 on a clear board and get redemption you it’s awesome cause you can Trigger the deathrattle 2 times
Could this be usable in Wild secret paladin as a 1-of? Maybe replacing a Spellbreaker or something?
Gonna go out on a limb and say this is bad, unless we get a really good paladin secret. The strength of Mysterious Challenger was not only pulling 5 secrets from your deck, but also the synergy the secrets have with one another. You attack a Paladin minion which triggers get down, you kill the dude which triggers avenge on another dude, but the get down dude is still alive thanks to redemption. In ye olde secret pally, the secrets were easily the worst cards of the deck, so getting 5 of them out basically for free was an insane upside. Bellboy over here has none of these upsides.
This card isn’t even as good as Hydrologist. With Hydrologist, you don’t have to put bad cards into your deck, and you get the flexibility of choosing between three secrets, picking whichever one may suit you best.
Not a bad card but paladin’s secrets kinda suck (in standard).
I do hope to see more secrets in the standard rotation. I personally don’t think this is great stats, it’s only pretty ok. Great 4 drop would be 4 mana 7/7. 😀
Same stats as keeper of uldaman, but lower than Evil Heckler.
Unless we have a strong 2 drop worth proccing redemption/getaway kodo for, this card is a bit slow, assuming that opponent is either going to go face for Noble Sacrifice or Silverhand recruit for turn 2 nothing play. Not likely opponent is going to flush out another secret for you the turn you play this.
Kodo is rotating,
It s a great 4 drop for Pally with a Nice interaction with redemption.
Now it s Time to nerf CtA blizz. It seriously has to be nerf…
Not broken, but a very solid card. As many people have mentioned, I really hope they print another pally secret this expansion.
It’s too bad we won’t be able to see Secret Paladin, Hunter and Mage exist all at the same time. But excited to see Secret Pal return! At least to experiment with!
I actually think this card could be really annoying to go through if you’re playing redemption.
Bellringer turn 4 brings redemption, opponent kills it, it comes back as a 3/1 (4/2 if you played sword of justice turn 3) and brings another secret (redemption) to play. Opponent kills it again redemption brings it back and still has another deathrattle to trigger. I see this working in buff paladin where you struggle to keep cards in board, even a 3/1 buffed with either stegodon or blessing of kings becomes a threat. Even if you pull noble defender it helps you battle for the board, potentially keeping your 3/4 and buffing it next turn. I’m excited for this card and the potential new secrets paladin could get.
4/5 stars for me.
First thought was more support for even Paladin, but secrets are odd…
My biggest hope is that this means they’re finally adding more Paladin secrets. Been wanting something that reads “when one of your minions is attacked by another minion, give it divine shield” or something. Might be too good, but Divine Paladin needs something like that.
Doesn’t anybody know why they’ve stopped making Paladin secrets?
3/4 is actually pretty solid for a 4 drop with 2 upsides. You reasonably 5 secrets to get decent rng potential to do. 2 of this. Noble sacrifice is passable, but redemption and repentance are easily played around. Let’s not even talk about eye for an eye. Yea We need at least 2 more decent secrets, but keep your eyes out for this card in future expansions, because it can be very powerful.
Mad Scientist was never played in Paladin decks because of just how low-impact their secrets are. This is a “better” Mad Scientist because it fetches 2 secrets instead of 1, but its stats are also much further below the curve. I actually have a really hard time trying to decide how good this card is, there’s already Call to Arms, Truesilver Champion…Paladin has always kind of been known as the 4 drop class and I’m not totally sure if this is worth adding yet another one which also requires you to put bad cards in your deck.
First deck I ever hit legend with was secret pally the day mad scientist was released 🙂 Pally is only running 1 4drop right now. I’m playing this.
Unlike Mad Scientist, this turbos out a secret as soon as its played, not pulls out two when it dies. If Hydrologist is anything to go by, such an effect if there is no choice to it is probably worth about .75 if not a full mana given how powerful Hydrologist is.
Granted, the card’s mana cost and stats would be fine as it is even if it were a deathrattle that pulled out two secrets.
The only issue with the card is not that its a four drop in a class with too many good four drops (Paladin isn’t even that seeing as they’re only good four drops are Truesilver, Lightfused Stegadon, Concentration, Blessing of Kings, and Call to arms at the moment, and you wouldn’t want to play all of them in the same deck), but that there are not enough good secrets for this card to pull out. There’s really only Redemption and Noble Sacrifice at the moment.
You’re last criticism was also the primary criticism of Mysterious Challenger after it was revealed. This may not be able to recreate the Christmas Tree Paladin, but it is powerful in the same way. They both pull out multiple low value cards from your deck directly.
Secret paladin lives again! I’m not sure how great this card will be, but I’m really hoping that it helps revive the secret paladin archetype in wild. Only being able to have 2 ways of tempoing out secrets was rather inconsistent, and this could definitely help with that problem.
NO! Wild is allready being flooded with paladins. We dont want it to become paladin only…
Good value . but Id think secret paladin will be bk . spe with no secrets reveal yet
Who am I? Worse than another card from the past.
That’s a good one! This guy is good, but he will never beat the original, who’s name will remain a ‘mystery’!
I’m glad I’m not the only one to notice the similarities!
