Update: The format was supposed to switch on January 6, but it looks like it’s switching at midnight on January 7, server time. At the time I’m writing this, it’s already live on China and APAC and still not live on NA & EU. I’ll post some new decks as soon as I find them, but since it’s a repeat format, you can also use decks that were played previously.
Twist is back for another season. The mode was first released into Beta back in June 2023 as the first major addition to Hearthstone since Mercenaries (which, looking back at it, was a mostly failed experiment). The idea behind Twist is that the format will rotate every couple of seasons, changing the list of available expansions, possibly with some extra rules.
Current Twist Format – XL Wonders
Wonders XL is a repeat format and a variation on the “Wonders” format. This is the second time we have seen it. It was first introduced in October 2023.
Wonders is a Constructed format “celebrating the early years of Hearthstone”. You build a deck with between 30 and 40 cards from the following expansions:
- Legacy (which is distinct from Core and Classic)
- Curse of Naxxramas
- Goblins vs Gnomes
- Blackrock Mountain
- The Grand Tournament
- The League of Explorers
- Whispers of the Old Gods
- One Night in Karazhan
- Mean Streets of Gadgetzan
- Caverns of Time
The extra rule is that your starting HP scales with the number of cards you added to your deck. So (for example), a 30-card deck will start with 30 HP, a 35-card deck with 35 HP, and a 40-card deck with 40 HP. You can’t go above 40 cards.
Demon Hunter and Death Knight are banned from the format since the classes didn’t exist back during those expansions.
Twist (XL Wonders) Deck Lists
The current Twist season has just started, so we don’t have any new decks yet. However, since it’s a repeat format, we still have a bunch of builds from the last time this format was played (October 2023). I’ll share some of them below – there might be better decks out there right now, but they should be a good starting point.
Alternatively, you can also use regular Wonders decks. The format allows you to play more than 30 cards, but you don’t have to. The strongest 30-card Wonders decks should still all be viable.

This is a really fun idea for oldschool players. It is bugged already on day 1: it is not legacy but just the og basic cards with a pinch of cards that were introduced as hall of fame replacements such as brightwing.
For the record, I am having a blast though (pun intended) with some spell damage basivc mage deck.
It took me longer than I want to admit that this is the same thread for all seasons, and was very confused by some of the deck suggestions below. LOL
*to figure out
(We need an edit button, here.)
This mode is fun if you want to play against Jade Rogue for 90%+ of your matches despite the new “seasons”
I don’t come across Jade Rogue very often. The last two days have been very diverse between dude paladin, secret paladin, inner fire priest, freeze/burn mage, miracle rogue, jade rogue, jade druid, reno decks, lots of different stuff really. Sadly not many decks that give off “real” un’goro vibes, like elementals or quest decks though.
I’ve been running into a lot of zoo decks personally, it’s been making things awkward playing mill druid with Clockwork Giant and Hogrider
Hey guys, i reached legend with a priest deck, but couldn’t upload it here because of the deck builder. I posted it on twitter tagging your profile there.

I don’t like Wonders XL as much. I’m so glad that these formats only last a month. I can play another mode in the meantime.
That warlock deck looks amazingly fun. Quick note: there are 2 Leeroy’s in the list above. One should be a Rag. 🙂

“Update: Sword Eater was removed from Twist Wonders in a recent hotfix, because it was not supposed to be there in the first place (Mean Streets of Gadgetzan is not a part of the format).”
Apparently Gadgetzan IS part of the format, but Sword Eater is from Darkmoon, and THAT set is not part of Twist Wonders
My bad, fixed it.
Sword Eater doesn’t exist in my card pool anymore … I was able to build (and play) decks with him, but since yesterday, the card is red in existing deck lists and is not available in the Warrior card pool anymore.
Moreover, some cards are shown weirdly in the collection.. Acolyte of Pain, for example, is shown 3 times: 2 normal (Core Set), 2 golden (Core Set) and the 2 golden copies I own, which are marked ‘banned’.
Blizzard still a small indie company, it seems.
I don’t know for the other cards, but for sword eater
“Fixed a bug where Sword Eater was playable in Twist, even though it is not in one of the legal expansions for this season”.
Thanks for the decks lists but i don’t know what’s wrong because all the decks code are failing to import into the game. HS doesnt detect the code as it should be usually inside your collection. Maybe because they rushed the Twist mode into the game and something is broken.
I tested import of standard deck list and it’s working so it’s really only the Twis mode import who doesn’t work !
I can import the Paladin and Hunter decks that do not include any of the brand-new cards from Caverns. I also cannot get the others to work.
Thanks for the report, I sort of fixed it! They still import as Wild, but you can convert them to Twist with one button.
Thanks ! Now i could import all the decks but some cant work even after the conversion into Twist because some cards are in red like for exemple in the war control : acolyte of pain or fiery axe.
How is it possible this cards are banned in twits if the player made it legend with this list ?
Sorry, I think deck codes might contain wrong version of the card. The cards on our website are prioritizing Core version and Core is not available in Twist.
But it can be fixed by taking those cards out of the deck, searching for them and adding them back in.
I’ll try to do something about deck codes but it’s hard with so many different formats and the fact that Twist will have different expansions every month :/
You know what is more a shame from Blizzard ? I spent some golds on Caverns of Time packs and i got a lot of copy of cards i aleady have (example Jade Behemoth from Gadgetzan) so it mean they gave me new copy of cards that i already have but they replaced the old cards by by the new cards. The old cards completely diseappeared in my collection and i don’t get dust or any compensation for that tt’s a total scam !
No explanation within Hearthstone what rules the Season 1 Twist format has?
And why on earth is there no filter for Caverns of Time? That way, it’s superdifficult to craft some of the cards if you don’t want to ‘massbuy’ the set… best thing I found is to filter for missing cards in Twist…
Very poorly executed imho.
The in-game filter for Caverns of Time is at the top of the Wild expansions. You need to scroll down a bit from the Standard expansions. There have been some display bugs with Caverns reprints though, there are cases where you cannot see them – also in crafting view – if you own exactly one copy of the reprint and two copies of the original.
Thanks for pointing that out – although I could swear I looked it up and the expansion button wasn’t there a few days ago …
And it seems I’m too dumb to use the filters – After filtering for ‘Caverns’ ‘missing’ with checked boxes ‘Normal – Missing’ and ‘Premium – Owned’, lots of golden wild cards I own aren’t shown (all the Shaman Jade cards, for example).
Ah well, I did it the other way round and checked which cards are played in Wild, then crafted some of those.
