The days when Hearthstone’s alternate Heroes were scarce are long gone. Right now, they’re quickly becoming the most popular cosmetic item. In fact, lately, we’ve been getting more new Hero portraits than card backs (which were by far the most common form of cosmetic previously).
In this post, I’ll round up all of the alternate Heroes in the game and give you some more information about them, including how you can (or could) get them and whether they’re still obtainable or not. Keep in mind that Heroes that are labeled as unobtainable can still become available in the future – old Hero portraits go on sale pretty regularly. I won’t update this post every time something goes on a sale (since it’s temporary), only when its availability changes permanently.
Currently, there are 114 hero portraits in the game, 60 of which are obtainable right now. Since that’s a lot and the number will only grow – here’s a full list of classes. You can click on any to jump straight to that class’ full guide on alternate heroes:

Great article Stonekeep. Probably the most comprehensive guide on the net.
Any tips on obtaining Lady Liadrin or pointing me to an adequate guide. I read somewhere last year to hold off until the Shadowlands patch because of a level squish or something (clueless here).
I have no inkling of knowledge when it comes to playing WOW, or an MMORPG for that matter. So, I’ve been totally holding off. Any info would be appreciated.
I, for one, am not a great fan of the latest trend of having a billion different versions of the same hero as “alternate” costumes. I see the appeal, but i would much rather enjoy a more diverse range of CHARACTERS, rather than versions of a particular character. That is especially true for Valeera. We have literally one alternative, it’s Maiev, and I think it’s safe to say that there is a tremendous amount of untapped potential for other characters.
I think that some variations on a “main character” from a class is good, but I’d also like more diversity. E.g. Warrior is really cool – they have Garrosh, Magni, Deathwing, Annhylde and Rokara. A lot to pick from and design of each of them is quite different. Shaman is also good, for example. But Valeera is the biggest offender –
I think that having multiples of the same character mostly comes from the fact that recently they introduced Rewards Track portraits, Tavern Regular portraits and Book of Heroes portraits, all depicting same characters and all piling up. Hopefully things will get more diverse again soon.
Have to agree. Really enjoying seeing some new faces. I for one would love a Scabbs Cutterbutter portrait. No offense to Valeera/Maiev.
Great List!
As I was interested in Prince Arthas, I just found out that you can claim the Knights of the Frozen Throne adventure for free in the battle.net shop (not in-game).
Best of luck. Beating the Lich King nine times is an absolute pain in the buttocks. This site had a good guide though. Use it.
You can use any card for Lich king so it’s a little easier than I imagine it use to be. Platebreaker certainly helps.
Oh hell, i forgot that card exists sometimes. But during OG Frozen Throne, man oh man. And that campaign in general – i still hear “Bonestorm” in my nightmares.
I’m starting to understand that 😀
The guide is useful for the context, but the decks are old and I am not that well-versed in wild. After a few days, I at least beat him with a frenzy / rush / enrage warrior deck. Frothing berserker is crazy, no platebreaker needed. I was lucky to have Samuro buffed enough as board clear on T7 though.
This kind of challenge is really nice though, also the deck building part.
Thank you. I should have probably mentioned it in the post – I’ll add it! 🙂
