I can only see a game changing impact at drawing a 4 mana spell. 3 mana is good but not nearly strong enough considering cheap cards from tar creepers, more 2/4s. This means either taking a risk with playing cards like Frostbolts and secrets which is bad enough. 2 extra mana for a potential volcanic potion? I don’t see the appeal in this deck other then a meme card getting firelands portal or pyroblast.

I actually don’t see the power of this card; trying not to run frostbolts, fireballs, polymorphs, glyphs, secrets, etc seems way too much of a cost to play a less effective volcano.

I see this card played in Control Mage. Control Mage doesn’t play minions often and typically has high cost spells. Assuming all spells in the deck cost 3 or more mana: at worst you get a +1 mana Hellfire, and at best a 7 damage board wipe. You can help by digging through the deck early on with Arcane Intellect, Novice Engineer, Loot Horder, Coldlight Oracle, Acolyte of Pain, and Arcanologist.

I feel like it’s at least worth experimentation definitely. It’ll depend on how often you low roll if decks decide to keep Frostbolt and Primordial Glyph.

So it activates like a hellfire rather than a volcano, didn’t know that. A lot better this way, much more OP

it looks fine but this radomness is quite painfull. I dont know does mage need something like this. Maybe its fine for quest mage. And there is aggro type mage which dont need spell like that. This card maybe has good/great? value for quest mage.

If you build normal Mage, then besides the possible Frostbolt it’s an Excavated Evil. If you build “Big Spell Mage”, then it’s essentially a 5-mana Flamestrike (+).

You could literally just make an entire deck of control minions, Medivh, and big spells, slap in the Mage Legendary and you’re golden.

Let’s remember last time blizzard pushed an archetype that didn’t make mush sense in a class (freeze Shaman everyone?)

      Using spells as a mage?
That is weird, it will never work! /s

The odd thing to me is that, outside of one terrible card, this card has seen no support from high cost spells this expansion. It almost seems as if they’re setting up for this deck to be good later, rather than in the coming meta.

If Blizzard are following their normal pattern, they’re already working on the next expansion, so it’s quite possible that they’ve already got some future synergy inbound after the next standard rotation.

I see Dragoncaller Alanna, Deck of Wonders, Spiteful Summoner, Arcane Artificer, Arcane Tyrant, Grand Archivist, and Raven Familiar. That seems like plenty of potential support.

The “big spells” mage deck will be garbage and will never see play outside of rank 20. Also this kills your own minions and is completely uncontrollable.

“Oh you’re going to ruin your deck by only playing big spells”
(Points out you literally 5 mana deal 3 is playable and you literally would only have to cut frostbolt)
“No, Big spell priest is bad”

        December 2, 2017 at 11:48 PM

Well then it’s a good thing that “big spell priest” does not exist. There is a big difference between “playable” and “good”, not to mention that nobody would play a symmetrical aoe damage spell if they didn’t know how much damage it will deal to their own minions. Makes planning impossible.

The only way to do this is to not have minions, which is a bad sign already. Conceding the board means you need a way to not die which is sustain, not aoe.

it will be good, maybe not tier 1 because no control deck can beat jade druid and priest

What would the win condition be in a Big Spell Mage ? Burn you with spells ?
All i can see is big board clears.

Medivh, Alex + Pyro, Lich Jaina.

By the time you actually play any of these you are dead.
You realize all cards you mentioned are above 8 mana ?
Btw all of them are playable and mage is nowhere in the meta.
And no the problem is not the lack of big spells.

But i have to play glyphs, Spellstones and ice though ?

no you don’t, with all the new high cost spells synergy, i expect this to be the cheapest spell in the deck

Now Deck of Wonders and Dragoncaller Alanna make a little more sense… if your deck has 5x Scroll of Wonders in it you’re more likely to deal 5 damage to everything rather than a lesser amount.

Make sure you play this BEFORE Alanna though 🙂

    5 Mana flamestrike?

    • mm
      December 1, 2017 at 8:05 AM

is better that flamestrike 4 damage, this will be the cheapest spell in the new spell mage, so always deals 5 or more damage

Maybe if it discarded the spell in the end. That would be a little more balance…?

So that you can’t have the result be Pyroblast every time, that’s why.

This is a powerful card, if this deals 3 its already strong, but mage has so many strong spells already so would be nicer to see this in another class

    • Darknes386
      December 1, 2017 at 7:30 AM

Well, not every class gets to just clear the board when it wants… mage is stuck with awful minions… but amazing board clear/control.

      • Dick
        December 1, 2017 at 8:25 AM

Well, mage does have a couple of really strong Minions, sustain, board clears, compared to other classes like Hunter

  16. UkuleleLover
    December 1, 2017 at 7:06 AM

I hope this doesn’t get annoying, the last thing mage needs is more clear spells.

Dude, what? You are complaining about mage spells while priest’s are countering everything… 6 mana deal 5 damage easy board clear.

      Medivh synergy.

I could see a deck being build around expensive spells and add cards like Raven Familiar, Spiteful Summoner, Deck of Wonders and top it off with Dragoncaller Alanna
