Top Standard, Wild & Twist Legend Decks – The Great Dark Beyond (Week 5) – December 2024

Before I start, I want to say that issues with deck codes are sadly still present. Any deck with Zilliax Deluxe 3000 (and let’s be real, that’s a lot of decks) won’t have its code working. The issue turned out to be more difficult to solve and the dev bandwidth I have access to is very limited. Believe me when I say it that I try to solve it as quickly as possible but it might take some more time. As a workaround, I always try to post a working deck code whenever I can. This post will be no different – for every deck running Zilliax, I will paste a working deck code BELOW the deck itself. Use it instead of the usual deck code box. I’m sorry for the inconvenience.

So, a few things have happened this week. We had Patch 31.2 on Tuesday, which introduced a new Battlegrounds season. Sadly, it also introduced a lot of bugs, including issues causing people to “softlock” their game. And they’re sadly very common since they involve all Choose One cards and Titans. You can read more about it in the Known Issues post, but my point here is that the game’s stability has been in the dumpster recently and that’s not great. I’ve been hearing that they want to focus on improving the game performance for a long time now but it seems to only get worse with time. I really do hope that things finally improve, I can bet that problems like that are the reason that many players quit the game.

Anyway, a new season of Twist also started with Patch 31.2. However, it looks like it’s pretty much dead on arrival. Giving us a repeat of a mildly popular format after 5 months of downtime is definitely a choice. Also, because of yet another bug, player ranks didn’t reset, so if you were already in Legend last time, boom, instant Legend. It might seem good, but frankly, the monthly climb is what’s interesting for many players. Without it they have no incentive to play. The mode is a bit more popular in China (the bug didn’t affect them because it’s the first time they have access to Twist), but not massively so from what I’m hearing. At the very least, since it’s a repeat format, most of the decks from the previous time the format was around still work well. It’s honestly quite hard to find new decks because of how unpopular the format is. Still, I managed to get some so I’ll post them here. If you want to see the older decks, check out this post.

In Standard, the main focus of the week was the return of Heroic Tavern Brawl. Usually, it drops shortly before the mini-set, but it looks like they decided to push it way earlier this time around. As always, my general advice is that unless you’re a high Legend player, you probably shouldn’t attempt to play it. Reward structure is very top-heavy, you need 5 wins to just break even (and the serious rewards only start at 10 wins when Golden Legendaries get added to the pool). That said, all of those 12 wins Brawl decks should work quite well on the regular ladder too because the Brawl meta isn’t much different.

Standard meta is quite stable at this point, the only development I’ve noticed is a new version of Aggro Demon Hunter getting popular. It’s a build that drops the Pirate package and instead focuses more on burn damage/attacking with Hero. Some of the popular decks right now (like Dungar Druid or Starship Rogue) have no good answer to an early Sock Puppet Slitherspear and the card can deal insane amounts of damage with the deck. We’ll see how things develop.

Also, Worlds are happening in just a few days (they start on Friday, December 13), and I’m curious about what the players decide to bring. While most of the builds are easy to guess, sometimes players have some weird and unexpected picks. Those are risky because they can either drag down their whole line-up if they didn’t predict the meta correctly… but they can win them the trophy if they end up finding a perfect counter. We’ll see if there’s anything like it this time around because they are always interesting to watch.
