Patch 25.4 dropped yesterday, with many positive features and the mini-set, but also an unexpected downside. Less than 24h before the patch was released, Blizzard informed about price hikes in multiple regions across the world. And saying “informed” is very generous – the only information was a single post on the official forums, in Spanish, with nothing about it on the official social media accounts. If not for the fact that people started sharing it online, many wouldn’t even realize that something like that happened. Even then, the period between the announcement and the price changes going live was so short that the warning was completely useless. I’m sure that some players would like to at least stock up on some packs with old prices, but they couldn’t do it since it was already too late.
Here’s the original message:
And here’s the translation:
Over the next week, along with update 25.4, the price of several Hearthstone in-game items will increase for some countries and regions, including Argentina, Brazil, Chile, Mexico, Australia, New Zealand, United Kingdom, Georgia, Turkey, Kazakhstan, Ukraine, South Korea, Taiwan and Japan. These adjustments will take place across all platforms and stores. Any initial disparity in pricing across platforms will be resolved shortly after the release of patch 25.4.
Of course, price hikes are nothing out of ordinary – between inflation, currency exchange fluctuations etc. it’s quite common for companies to increase prices in some regions. The price hike was modest in some countries – for example in Japan or New Zealand, Runestone prices went up by only a few %. It starts getting worse when you look at Mexico and Kazakhstan at roughly 25-30% price increase. That’s a lot and people from those countries might certainly feel it, but it’s still within the limits of what I would expect. However, this hike was way, way bigger than I could ever imagine in other places.
For example, in Brazil, the prices have increased by ~120%, while in Argentina they went up by a whooping ~600%. The new prices are often completely out of reach of people living in those countries. For example, players in Argentina now have to pay half of their minimum monthly salary for the Mega Pre-Purchase Bundle. To make a comparison – imagine someone living in California state in the United States having to pay around $1200 for the same bundle (which currently costs $80). Those purchases were already expensive before the increase, now most of the people from those regions have no other option than going completely F2P or quitting the game.
Not to mention the optics of increasing prices in Turkey or Ukraine given what happens in those countries right now – it just doesn’t look good and Blizzard definitely could have excluded those countries from the list or at least waited.
Many players are rightfully angry with Blizzard for this move. Regional prices exist for a reason and this change virtually got rid of them, making everyone pay roughly the same as people from the US while often earning many times less money. It’s not fair, but sadly I don’t think there’s anything that can be done about it. Hearthstone had price hikes in certain regions many times before, and even though people from those regions protested, I can’t remember a single time they were reverted.
If I had to give an explanation for such steep price increases, the only thing that comes to my mind is people from other, more rich countries buying packs for regional prices in those poorer countries instead of paying full price in their own currency. That’s often the reason cited for companies who get rid of regional pricing or at least make them closer to what people in the US pay. I know that it was a popular method of purchasing games for much cheaper, but many companies (like Valve) have implemented countermeasures while still keeping the lower regional prices. If that’s the reason for this price hike, I really think that Blizzard should try to prevent people from buying stuff outside of their country instead of punishing the people actually living there.
Argentina prices:
Old (31/01/23) >>> 8.000 runes = AR$3.430 (taxes included) ~US$10; 5% of Minimun Salary
Now >>> 8.000 runes = AR$25.200 (taxes included) ~US$72; 37,2% of Minimun Salary.
This is quick maths but you can see it clearly. It’s a punch on the face to people how spends money. (I’m F2P).
Here in Brazil, 500 runes was R$9,00 now it is R$22,49
Hey friends, Turkish guy here.
Let me make a quick financial summary from our perspective, maybe someone would find it interesting and want to know more.
Prices are pretty messed up in Blizzard’s Turkish market. I am a F2P player since 2015 (except 1 tavern pass) but I was casually checking out the shop now and then.
The shop has Turkish Lira (TL) currency. Since the exchange rate is kinda shitty, it is quite expensive if you want to spend some Turkish money. Let’s check the examples:
On the Blizzard web site you can purchase tavern pass for 280 TL (~14 EUR) now. It was 200 TL (10 EUR) 1 expansion ago and 100 TL (~5 EUR) 2 expansions ago.
(BTW: If you want to buy it on iPhone; it is 450 TL (~24 EUR) right now. Yeah, stupid deal.)
Now, I am not going to argue if it is already a good price or compare it with the minimum wage. Statically, it has been increased 50-100% every expansion; every trimester. Just imagine something you buy regularly is getting that much increase every few months.
I am not mad at Blizz for that; they just trying to keep up with the exchange rate. And we all know why the exchange rate is so f’ed up. There is an election approaching this May, so we’ll see if we can help Blizz.
The risen pricing sounds bad, but without specific numbers it’s hard to judge. If the prices were super cheap in some countries and now it’s the same prices everywhere in the world. Wouldn’t that be better?
What place has now the best deal on the mega bundle and what place has the worst deal?
Mr Wolfer I don’t think you understand the pricing. Perhaps to someone living in the US the prices may have seemed super cheap in South America but I guarantee you the people who paid for Hearthstone in the past are all middle class and up in terms of wages. Now imagine somebody paying half minimum wage for a Hearthstone bundle…that’s the situation in Argentina now. I don’t know many Americans who would pay 1200 bucks for a bundle…do you?
Good gracious!? 600% … o.0 And including Turkey and Ukraine regardless of their current situation has to be the epitome of heartless capitalism.
No mercy even for Turkey and Ukraine, make this company fail
they are really greedy. new target in argnetina is big whale, they know they have the money and don’t care about others. inflation is exploding in argentina. wealth inequity is really high in argentina.
Argentinian here, honestly, terribly bummed out by the news, was looking to buy the mini set.
Prices were incredibly cheap here, don’t get me wrong, I used to be able to afford $20 packs for like $4, however, this just feels like a punch in the gut by blizzard. Might end up quitting unfortunately.
Hi there! May I ask what you mean by ‘incredibly cheap’? What did they cost and what do they cost now?
I feel for you Argentinian… I’m in Brazil and even though we didn’t get a 600% rise in prices like you guys, with an approximately 120% hike in costs here, I guarantee you about 90% of paying customers are going to quit…me included. With the next expansion I’m done.
Yeah I think its time to call it quits, the games are too long to play for me, especially battlegrounds the turns are just too long, Marvel Snap has taken that itch over now but I don’t need time hungry games to play.
Unfortunately I’m quitting. I started back on Kobolds and HSTopDecks was the first site I used. Always liked your card reviews, Old Guardian’s articles…
I’ll miss the community, but I wasn’t enjoying the game nowadays and this increase was really offensive. I tried playing yesterday, but I felt really bad doing it, like if I was supporting someone who humiliated me, I dunno…
Thanks for making the game better for us, HSTD team!
