Top Standard & Wild Legend Decks – Sunken City (+Throne of Tides) Week 12 – June 2022

A single card released early last week – Prince Renathal – had a bigger impact on the meta than some balance patches, or possibly even mini-sets. The card changes fundamental rules of deck building – you can put 40 cards into your deck (which is, for the most part, a downside), but you get 10 free health at the start of the match. While less consistent draws and a slightly lower quality of the deck is a bit of a problem, the 10 health part makes it an insane inclusion in many builds, especially against more aggressive decks. For example, imagine that you had a bad start and you get rushed down to 8 health before you stabilize. It’s very easy for most of the aggressive decks to finish the job – weapons, Mr. Smite + a smaller Pirate, burn spells, or a combination of all of those. But if you run Renathal, you’re still sitting at a cool 18 health, way out of reach of most of the decks. Yes, it’s not always that simple, because you might not find a way to stabilize if your deck is bigger, but if you build it correctly, it should still be pretty balanced.

Because of that, Renathal decks have taken over the ladder. As you can imagine, not every decks benefits from 40 health, so there are still many builds that don’t run it. But right now, the card is present in around 40% of the decks on the ladder, and that’s huge (the only more popular card is another freebie – Blademaster Okani – but that’s only in Legend, for the rest of the ladder Renathal is the most popular card). We already covered them in a separate article, but the most popular ones so far include Renathal Prestor Druid, Renathal Celestial Druid, Renathal Curse Warlock, and Renathal Questline Priest. Others have experiemented with the card in many other archetypes, including Big Spell Mage, Beast Hunter, Thief Rogue etc.

While they are incredibly popular, they aren’t necessarily the best performing decks. For the most part, strongest decks don’t want to run him, but people play him so much because it’s something new and honestly quite fun.

Oh, and the new expansion was announced. Murder at Castle Nathria is releasing on August 2 and it has, in my opinion, an incredibly cool theme. I hope that it will feel like an actual murder mystery, but so far it looks good. You can check out our expansion guide with all the important information and card reveals here.
