The decks have started to shape up and we are starting to get a good idea on what the standout cards are from the Whispers of the Old Gods expansion. A card like Darkshire Councilman which didn’t get a lot of fanfare is looking dominant in Warlock Zoo. We’ve also seen a relatively innocent looking Taunt card Bloodhoof Brave really help improve the new Patron Warrior deck list. In terms of legendary cards, it hasn’t been super surprising, but let’s take a look at what has materialized as the top legends from the expansion so far.
If you’re thinking about crafting a legendary then this guide might help you decide which will be most beneficial to you!
Best Standard WotOG Legendaries
These are the best Legendaries of the expansion so far. They are in decks that are likely going to define the meta in the weeks to come.
C'Thun
I think most people saw this one coming, but C’Thun is a strong card. It would have been a pretty big failure on Blizzard’s part if the card didn’t perform at least mildly well after building a lot of the expansion around it. It’s somewhat of a toss up on where C’Thun fits in best. Druid’s C’Thun deck is strong, and has some of the best C’Thun support cards. C’Thun Warrior is another destination that could work out well, but Druid is for sure the class to beat at the moment.
Current Decks: C’Thun Druid and C’Thun Warrior
N'Zoth, The Corruptor
Not a huge surprise seeing N’Zoth on this list. The card has a crazy Battlecry and can swing games around quite often. It is super impressive in a class like Paladin that has a Deathrattle card like Tirion Fordring at its disposal. The card also works well in Deathrattle Rogue that has been competitive on the ladder.
Current Decks: N’Zoth Deathrattle Paladin and Deathrattle Rogue
Twin Emperor Vek'lor
If you’re playing a C’Thun list then you are likely playing Twin Emperor Vek'lor. The card is great in these decks, and if you’re playing it in Druid and have a 10/10 C’Thun on turn 5 then using Innervate with this guy can easily win you games.
Current Decks: C’Thun Druid and C’Thun Warrior
Ragnaros, Lightlord
Ragnaros, Lightlord has been pretty impressive so far. The card works great as not only a way to heal yourself, but works as a big threat in a world post Big Game Hunter. The card appears prominently in late game Paladin lists that also use the impressive Forbidden Healing.
Current Decks: N’Zoth Deathrattle Paladin and Healadin Paladin
Good Standard WotOG Legendaries
These are Legendaries that I’m not positive are going to be in meta decks in the future. Some of these are on the verge of moving up a tier, and some could be on the way down.
Fandral Staghelm
This is a very strong card if you can get a couple of Choose One cards doubled up off of it. The problem is the card can be dealt with pretty easily if played on curve, and be too situational at times to be used. Once we see the final list of C’Thun Druid I would have a better idea on how good this card can be. This card will also likely have a home in Ramp Druid.
Current Decks: C’Thun Druid and Ramp Druid
Princess Huhuran
A 5 cost 6/5 is a pretty solid minion, but having the effect as well makes it a strong card. The problem for Princess Huhuran is that Hunter isn’t that great. I have yet to see a truly strong Deathrattle (with or without N’Zoth) build. Midrange Hunter is still trying to find the right list composition, and Face Hunter won’t use this card.
Current Decks: Midrange Hunter
Xaril, Poisoned Mind
Xaril fits in the new Deathrattle Rogue, and the Toxin tokens do great in Miracle Rogue. There’s been murmurings that Malygos Rogue is going be strong, but I’m not positive this card fits in that list.
Current Decks: Deathrattle Rogue and Miracle Rogue
Most Improved Legendaries in Standard
These aren’t WotOG Legendaries, but cards that have seen a huge jump in play due to the Standard format and the new expansion.
Sylvanas Windrunner
Sylvanas Windrunner was already a strong Legendary, but now with the lack of much Silence the card is pretty difficult to deal with. The card also does a great job dealing with C’Thun if you manage not to immediately die from the damage it outputs from the Battlecry. Sylvanas also directly benefits from N’Zoth being a strong card because of the obvious synergy.
Cairne Bloodhoof
Cairne Bloodhoof was once a very strong Legendary card before it was overtaken by cards from Curse of Naxxramas and Goblins vs. Gnomes. The card is strong once again because of the lack of Silence and the strength of N’Zoth. Deathrattle Rogue will generally make use of him, and he might also see play in the Deathrattle Paladin list.
Edit: The Black Knight
It was pointed out to me that I left out The Black Knight, and they are absolutely right. The Black Knight is much improved now that there’s a ton of C’Thun Druids floating around with their very strong taunts. You have Paladin running Tirion Fordring, C’Thun Warrior running Crazed Worshipper, Patron Warrior running Bloodhoof Brave, and Shaman running Thing from Below. There’s basically a ton of Taunts out there and not very much removal, so The Black Knight has significantly increased in value.
Black Knight > BGH these days.
Staghelm just not that good bro
May i translate this article in Chinese and post it in a Taiwan forum?
Sure, I’m probably going to add something about The Black Knight which I totally forgot.
The Black Knight belongs in the most improved legendaries list. It is really great now, due to taunts running around in many decks.
You’re right, I added him.
Top Deck in the format imho is Deathrattle Paladin. I have been cleaning up with this deck although I’m sure someone will find a counter to it sometime soon.
Playing against ControlPriest feels sooo bad with that deck though – they Entomb Tirion/Sylvanas, Cabal/ShadowMadness the 1/1s and the N’Zoth is basically useless and you will die in Fatigue…
all decks have their poor matchups. just dont play sylvanas until after youve dropped Nzoth. i always pack an acidic swamp ooze for those instances when tirion i used against me.
