It’s happening! The nerf patch was officially announced a few days ago, and it will drop next Tuesday (July 14). You can see all the card changes here. But the long story short is that Demon Hunter is getting a huge hit. One of the strongest cards in the deck – Warglaives of Azzinoth – will now cost one extra mana. It dropping a turn earlier is a massive difference. Delaying it by a turn often means that you give your opponent one more turn to either develop the board without getting afraid of being wiped by a few attacks, or basically one more turn to live, because DH will start their barrage of damage slightly later. There are also nerfs to Metamorphosis (pretty big, it will deal 4 damage instead of 5, decreasing the total damage from 10 to 8) and Kayn Sunfury (a minor nerf, turning it from a 3/5 to a 3/4, but a nerf is a nerf). Other than that, Spell Druid, Warrior, Highlander Mage (and any Highlander deck because of DQA) and Galakrond Rogue all got some nerfs – mostly minor, nothing that will kill the decks, but they might make some impact.
We expect the meta to change quite a lot, and it’s honestly hard to say in which direction. Since the entire meta is warped around Demon Hunter now, a big nerf to the class might be a solid buff to some other, less known decks. Similarly, it’s a nerf to Warrior, because one of the main reasons why it stayed on the top is its great Demon Hunter matchup (of course, that’s not the ONLY reason, but if Demon Hunter gets dethroned, Warrior will also get a bit weaker). So far the biggest winner might be Priest, which didn’t get any nerfs and has been proving its power in high Legend time and time again (it’s not as good at lower ranks, because contrary to a popular belief, it’s pretty difficult to play correctly). But to be perfectly honest, no one knows how to meta will look like in a week.
What’s also interesting is that we should get a new expansion announcement very soon. Since Blizzard doesn’t want to release two patches back to back, the Tuesday patch will most likely contain pre-orders for the next set too. Which means that we will hear about it on Monday or Tuesday, before the patch goes live. And it’s about time – Ashes of Outland was announced on March 17, which was also a Tuesday. We’ll probably also have almost no downtime between announcement and reveal season + it will be another quick one… but that’s just speculation based on the previous release. We’ll keep you posted!
And yeah, there’s no reason to talk about this week’s meta, because nothing has changed. The only interesting things are two Control Demon Hunter decks that got to high Legend. It’s not nearly as powerful as Tempo Demon Hunter, but turned out to be surprisingly competitive if you master it. We’ve also got two interesting Mage builds – Spell Mage & Big Spell Mage, as well as a cool, off-meta Murloc Dragon Druid (really cool deck – not very strong, of course, but fun to play when it all works out).
