Prime Minions
Each of the nine original classes will get a Prime Legendary in Ashes of Outland. While it’s the first time this mechanic has a name, it’s not exactly a new concept. We’ve already seen it with cards like e.g. Forgotten Torch or Direhorn Hatchling.
The idea is that you play a minion which is slightly above average at first (not terrible, but you wouldn’t necessarily want to put it into your deck), but once it dies, it shuffles an upgraded version of itself back to your deck.
The Prime version is more costly (so it has impact when you draw it later), but also significantly stronger. However, it’s also not “I win the game” card – it’s good, but not immediately sealing the game once you play it.
Imprisoned Demons
Just like in case of Prime minions, Imprisoned Demons isn’t introducing a completely new idea or keyword – it uses the Dormant mechanic already seen on a few cards (e.g. Sherazin, Corpse Flower or The Darkness). In this case, instead of having to accomplish something to wake them up, you get a timer. After you play one of those minions, it wakes up after 2 turns.
However, to compensate for the fact that you don’t get them immediately, they come with a variety of powerful effects, doing something when they wake up. Blizzard decided to focus on strong effects instead of just giving them lots of extra stats to make them more interesting and balanced (no one wants to face big minions too early).
It’s a bit like the opposite of Overload – instead of having a more powerful effect right now and paying mana next turn, you pay mana upfront and have a more powerful effect after 2 turns. It promotes planning out your upcoming turns, but also gives your opponent some time to react and prepare for what’s coming.

When is the new adventure expected?
Free legendaries on release day?
Based on past expansions, the launch date is same for all world or based on each place local time? Wanna get the bundle but need to put money in the credit card I use. So wanted to know if I can go like Tuesday morning (GMT+3) ?
The launch should be global, that’s how it worked for the last few years.
Expansions are usually released around 10 AM PT, which would be 18:00 / 6 PM GMT+3. So yes, you should still be able to get it in the morning your time.
what are the rewards for the solo adventure?
We don’t even know how the solo adventure will look like yet 🙂 But we definitely won’t get new cards like in Galakrond’s Awakening. Probably some card packs and cosmetics (like card back).
Aren’t demon hunters supposed to be unlocked today? Is it supposed to be an update or should it just be there when I log in?
You probably already know that (sorry about the late reply :p) but the Prologue is already out and you can unlock the class, although you still can’t play it until April 7.
Sorry boys, I know you were looking for my
/insightful/
commentary this expansion, but alas, I was unable. Do not fret, I will be back next expansion with a vengeance.
See you then.
Hmm, this new 6 mana 7/5 legendary neutral demon in my collection looks familiar. Name doesn’t ring a bell, though…
Hahah. Illidan (Classic Legendary, not the new DH Hero obviously) was changed to Xavius in the latest patch.
I am very disappointed for the paladin Prime. Not because of the card potential or value, but because of the class identity and lore. Other classes got Akama, Lady Vashj, Kargath but paladin some random murloc. They are just exaggerating with this relation between paladin and murlocs, a joke that has gone too far.
I was hoping for Vindicator Maraad or Turalyon returning as High Exarch Turalyon, but maybe I was hopping too much. Otherwise a very nice and exciting expansion, I just wait the launch day.
I honestly agree, I also hoped for Maraad to be Paladin’s Prime minion. Maybe they’re planning something else for him…
I very very disappointed for the paladin Prime. Not because of the card potential or value, but because of the class identity and lore. Other classes got Akama, Lady Vashj, Kargath and paladin some random, stupid murloc…. They are just exaggerating with this relation between paladin and murlocs, a joke that has gone too far….
I think this set has the best artwork ever.
I agree. While we still have some goofy, HS-style stuff, cards like Priestess of Fury or Mok’Nathal Lion look like something straight out of MTG.
So true. I still miss Gelvin Mekatorque.
I’m disappointed that only Paladin got a new way of playing that could potentially be competitive.
Enrage/Aggro warrior gets a few new tools, highlander/galk rogue get even more card draw/tools
Most of the old decks will remain meta: Rogue, Hunter, Emb Druid are clear winners.
Evolve shaman may stand a chance but of course the randomness of it limits it from ever being tier 1 or consistent; probably a tier 3 deck.
Warlock is getting screwed with so many demons being dormant; Galk hasn’t become stronger and probably weaker.
Aggro Demon Hunter will be strong; probably challenging to dragon hunter.
When will all cards be revealed so we can see them all on this list?
thanks
Where is Crimson sigil runner?
1 mana 2/1 OUTCAST: draw a card from demon hunter
never mind, it’s there now, didn’t reallise how new the card was…
Apparently it really WOULD have killed them to reveal more than two Priest cards before the final stream tomorrow.
sorry if this has been asked somewhere else, but anyone have any idea how secrets like snipe or mirror entity interact with the imprisoned demons?
The Darkness didn’t trigger Secrets like Snipe or Mirror Entity (neither when played nor woken up), so I would assume it will work the same for Imprisoned Demons.
Interesting thanks for the reply!
I have 2 questions regarding the expansion and it’s launch:
1. With the 4 Arena tickets, does anyone know if it’s possible to start a runnow and finish it after April 7th? Or will the open runs be stopped and ‘paid out’ due to an Arena season change?
2. Regarding ‘Vashj Prime’: Card reads ‘Draw 3 spells’… if I don’t have any spells in my deck, it will draw nothing, correct? And if I have spells in it… is this Prime card a ‘tutor 3’? This would be pretty insane, right!?
Previously the run would be forced to finish, giving you the rewards for how many wins you got and your ticket would get refunded. But I don’t think that it worked like that during the last Arena rotation – I’m pretty sure that I could still play my deck. So I don’t really know what they will do now…
Correct, if you have no spells in your deck, it won’t draw anything. And yep, it tutors 3 spells. Yes, the card is strong, and so are the other Prime minions. I think that the reason is that you won’t even see them in lots of your games (first you need to draw the regular minion, then it needs to die without getting silenced/transformed, and then you need to draw the Prime version) so Blizzard wanted them to be impactful when you do find them. It’s a bit like Shaman’s older Legendary “White Eyes” – you shuffled a 5 mana 10/10 Taunt into your deck, which was obviously bonkers, but it wasn’t problematic because you usually drew it so late.
Makes sense (answer to Vashj). Thanks for your detailled reply!
I can’t reply to my comment for some reason so I’ll link the videk here.
https://youtu.be/J6hSNKfa51o
At 0:40 there is a 4 mana (played for 1, because Skull of Guldan reduced its cost by 3) spell. Choose a friendly demon and summon a copy of it.
Yes, replies got messed up for some reason… We’re working to bring them back.
Thanks for the report, but the card is already on our site 🙂 https://www.hearthstonetopdecks.com/cards/soul-split/
It’s just not an Ashes of Outland card, and this guide only contains those. If you want to see all of the Demon Hunter cards currently revealed, you can check out our DH guide: https://www.hearthstonetopdecks.com/demon-hunter-guide/
Dear Site-Editor!
Thank you for the great work.
I saw a Demon Hunter card that is not on this site. It was in a video, I’ll link it here.
will they release the replacements for the neutral cards which rotate to the hall of fame when the expansion releases or later?
Priest HoF’d cards are getting replaced immediately. As for the Neutrals, I would imagine that they will also get replaced, but maybe not immediately. Hall of Fame happens on Thursday, so we’ll see then.
When I load this page at the moment everything between the title and the picture of the new board is compressed down to a small column of text and gets shifted way to the right. Also none of the new cards are displayed. Is it just my computer being bad or are other people experiencing this?
Ya me too. They are probably working on a fix though
yea same problem here
Yeah, we had some issues with the card display and they bugged the entire expansion guide. I think that everything should be fixed now!
All good now thanks :). Actually fixed a while ago but then I couldn’t comment, so now I get to thank you for that too. Keep up the good work!
If all Demon Hunter Basic & Initiate cards is given free at 2nd April, is it playable immediately after? Both Standard & Wild?
I’m guessing there’ll be multiple big patches coming.
26th March – Updating Packs Rarity Protection (maybe HoF)
2nd April – 1st Prologue Demon Hunter Story
7nd April – Battleground and AoO Expansion?
You’re right, but to add onto your timeline – March 26 will indeed be HoF, but also Priest rework. Then, on April 1 (new season) the ranked system rework will drop.
You will be able to play through the prologue and unlock him on April 2, but the class won’t go live until expansion (April 7).
One thing to note after the cards reveal, all class got Prime minion except Demon Hunter. I wonder why?
Anyone know if there will be a paywall for the ashes of outlands adventure? Cause I hope, not…
It’s going to be free. But we don’t know how it will look like yet. You know, whether it will be a simple story adventure like Galakrond’s Awakening, or something more like Dungeon Run, or maybe they will come up with something entirely new.
Ok, Thanks! (I’m pretty sure the adventure will look more like galakrond’s awakening than dungeon run, pretty sure I saw a clip of the layout somewhere, and it looked like galakrond’s awakening)
Yeah, that would be my guess too. Dungeon Run style adventures take a lot more work, and this one will be free too.
I hope that they will experiment a bit and release a new style of solo content later this year 🙂
There is 135 cards in new expansion
We can get two copies of every card
Ä°t means there is 270 card we can get
Every pack has 5 cards
Because of the new thing (we can not get the cards we have from packs) if we open 54 pack we can get the all expansion cards
But in the shop we can buy 90 deck
After we have opened the 54 pack we would have all cards
Ä°t means the rest of the pack(36 pack ) we can not get any other cards
Am I making mistake can anybody help me
Yes, you’re mistaken. That’s not how duplicate protection works.
Duplicate protection for each rarity is separate. E.g. you don’t get duplicate commons at the start, but when you collect every common, you’re assuming that you will stop opening them and only open Rares, Epics and Legendaries. That’s not correct – after you open all cards from a given rarity, you will still keep getting that rarity, just random cards. When you open all Commons, you will start getting random duplicate Commons.
Duplicate protection will mean that you get more value out of your packs, but it would be absolutely crazy if you would get literally an entire set in ~50 packs. No one would pay for packs then, because you can easily collect enough gold to open more than 50 packs every expansion.
(Also, your math about the number of cards is wrong, because we only have 1x of every Legendary, so there’s less than 270 cards in total)
Thank very much 🙂 you are the best,
I don‘t think it works like that. If you have let‘s say 2 copies of all the commons, you will start to get more of the commons randomly. So you won‘t get just epics and legendaries in a pack if you have all the commons and rares.
So you still would have to open a lot of packs to get all epics and legendaries.
But it‘s way better than before though.
I hope this is correct (well actually I am hoping you are right), that‘s my understanding of how it will work.
You’re right, that’s exactly how it will work.
Thank you for confirming! And thanks for this site, it‘s my absolute to-go-site every new expansion!
Stonekeep, about the rarity distribution (common / rare / epic / legendary) in Ashes of Outlands, Chadd has confirmed that Demon Hunter will get 6 / 5 / 2 / 2, all 9 old classes will still be 3 / 3 / 2 / 2, Neutral will be 19 / 3 / 3 / 5. You can find his comment on the pinned Reddit post.
Thanks for the tip, I’ll look for his comment and update the rarity distribution!
Big question, is msshi’fn prime gonna summon 2 things in quest druid, or one thing with both effects?
One thing with both effects.
Maybe I missed it, but was there any information included about an adventure with this expansion?
We just know that there will be a free adventure. No info about its format, when it will release etc.
Hi
Which expansions will be rotate out?
Every Year of the Raven (2018) expansion will rotate out when Ashes of Outland launches.
So Witchwood, Boomsday Project and Rastakhan’s Rumble.
Read more about the rotation here: https://www.hearthstonetopdecks.com/guides/hearthstone-standard-rotation-schedule-guide/
I know spells won’t affect dormant minions. But I wonder how the interactions between dormant minions and board removal Battlecry like The Amazing Reno. Or this dormant minions can’t be removed until awakens.
Plus we still need to know when does this minions awake. At the start of 3rd turn, or at the end of 2nd turn.
You play it one turn. It does nothing next turn. Then it wakes up at the start of the next one. But it obviously still can’t attack (unless it has Charge/Rush).
E.g. you play it on Turn 3, Turn 4 is skipped, then it wakes up at the start of Turn 5. Then it can attack on Turn 6. Pretty slow, but we’ll see how it goes – their effects seem really solid.
And I don’t believe that they can be interacted with in any way, including Reno.
Dormant uses the stasis mechanic from Heist so there will be a timer. Dormant 2 means invulnerable for 2 of your turns then summoning sickness but not sure if its start or end of turn , will double check video but I think it was before you draw the effect of dormancy ends.
A good way to test if Reno removes is to try Lucentbark or Un’goro Rogue plant that use a similar stasis effect
Or try Reno on the Darkness.
