Patch notes for Patch 21.8 are here and the update is really big! It should already be live on PC as I’m writing this, and mobile release should follow soon-ish (it’s usually up to a few hours after PC). Update: It’s live on both Android and iOS now! Here’s a summary of what’s coming in the patch:
- New Hearthstone Expansion Announced – Fractured in Alterac Valley is the new Hearthstone expansion and it’s coming December 7. It will have 135 new cards themed after the frosty weather and conflict between Alliance and Horde (for those unfamiliar with WoW, Alterac Valley is a massive 40v40 Battleground). The first card reveals are already here and we should start getting more soon.
- Horde vs Alliance Honor System – When you log in after the patch release, you will choose your allegiance to one of the factions – Alliance or Horde. Depending on the faction you choose, you will get a different free Golden Legendary card – Drek’thar, of the Frostwolf clan, or Vandarr Stormpike, leader of Stormpike Dwarves. After expansion launches on December 7, two factions will compete for even more free rewards by playing Hearthstone matches (with bonus points for wins, and double bonus points for wins against players from the other faction). Honor can be gained in Constructed, Arena and Duels. As you gain honor, you climb the ranks and progress through a Legendary Quest Chain. Everyone who completes the Legendary Quest Chain will get the same amount of rewards INCLUDING the opposing faction’s leader. When the event ends on January 11, every player will get a Diamond copy of the leader from the faction that got more Honor points in total.
- Balance Changes for Constructed, Battlegrounds and Mercenaries – Constructed ones were already announced last week, we’ll get nerfs to Razormane Battleguard, Arcanist Dawngrasp and Garrote + buff to Renew. But we’re also getting multiple balance changes in other game modes, like Battlegrounds and Mercenaries (the latter is especially big, with tons of Mercenaries getting buffed). Even Arena is getting some love, with Deeprun Engineer getting banned.
- New Battlegrounds Hero – Tamsin Roame – Tamsin Roame arrives in Battlegrounds. Her Hero Power will cost 0 and trigger at the start of the combat, destroying your lowest health minion and giving its health to all the other minions in your warband. It’s interesting to see how that plays out in the game.
- Armor System in Battlegrounds – A new mechanic is getting added to Battlegrounds – Armor. At the start of each match, Heroes will get assigned some Armor based on their power level. Strongest Heroes will get no Armor, while the weakest ones will get up to 10. The Armor ranges and Hero placements will change as a part of the balancing, and the entire system may go in and out of the game in future patches as they test and refine it.
- Book of Mercenaries: Scabbs – Scabbs’ PvE adventure launches… TODAY! Yeah, it’s quite unexpected given that we just had Cariel’s Book launching last week, but I guess that they want to hurry things up and tell the rest of the story.
- Bug Fixes & QoL Changes – Just like with every patch, we’re also getting a ton of bug fixes and other small changes. As you probably expect, most of them are related to Mercenaries, which was quite buggy at launch. But we also have some Constructed, Battlegrounds, Duels and more general fixes.

Patch 21.8, launching today, paves the way for Hearthstone’s next expansion with balance changes, Fractured in Alterac Valley pre-purchase, and more!
Choose Your Faction, Claim Your Leader
Next time you log in to Hearthstone, you will get to choose between Horde and Alliance! Your choice comes with a different free Golden Legendary ahead of the expansion. Joining the Horde will instantly get you the mighty Drek’Thar, of the Frostwolf clan! Those who aid the Alliance will instantly receive the stout Vanndar Stormpike, leader of the Stormpike Dwarves!
Pre-Purchase Fractured in Alterac Valley
Hearthstone’s next expansion, Fractured in Alterac Valley, is coming on December 7! After a year of growth, the set follows our Mercenary heroes to a frozen battlefield where they join their factions in a final showdown for honor and powerful shards of a fallen naaru!
Fight for Honor and Battle for Alterac Valley!
After the expansion launches, from December 7 to January 11, all players will compete for Honor in order to receive even more free rewards and to claim ultimate victory for their faction! You gain Honor by playing and winning during the eligible period:
- 10 Honor for every game played
- 10 more Honor for every game won (20 total)
- 20 more Honor for every game won versus an opponent from the enemy faction (40 total)
Honor can be gained in Traditional, Arena, and Duels Modes. As you gain Honor, you climb the ranks within your faction and progress a Legendary Quest chain that takes you through the Alterac Valley battlefields and rewards cards from the expansion! All players who complete the Quest chain will receive the same total end rewards, including a Golden copy of the enemy faction’s leader. The order of the rewards depends on which faction you choose, and will be revealed closer to release!
At the end of the event, all Honor will be tallied and the winning faction’s accomplishment will be forever enshrined in Hearthstone, because every player will receive a Diamond copy of the winning faction’s leader card (Drek’Thar or Vanndar)! Every time a player opens their Collection, they will remember this glorious battle!
Card Balance Updates
Razormane Battleguard
- Old: 2 Attack, 3 Health → New: 2 Attack, 2 Health
- Dev Comment: We’re scaling back on Battleguard to allow a few more answers to it in the early game. Taunt Druid is performing quite well, so we’ll be monitoring it closely to determine whether any more changes are needed.
Arcanist Dawngrasp (Mage Questline final reward)
- Old: Battlecry: For the rest of the game, you have Spell Damage +3. → New: For the rest of the game, you have Spell Damage +2.
- Dev Comment: Reducing the lethality of Questline Mage should help open up additional room for slower strategies to succeed.
Garrote
- Old: Deal 2 damage to the enemy hero. Shuffle 3 Bleeds into your deck that deal 2 more when drawn. → New: Deal 2 damage to the enemy hero. Shuffle 2 Bleeds into your deck that deal 2 more when drawn.
- Dev Comment: Garrote Rogue has performed quite well at higher ranks. This is a softer change aimed at increasing the breakpoint of Spell Damage needed from 2 to 3, while also making Armor a more effective counter to the strategy.
The cards listed above will be eligible for a full dust refund for 2 weeks after the 21.8 patch goes live.
Renew
- Old: [Costs 2] → New: [Costs 1]
- Dev Comment: Priest archetypes outside of Shadow have been underperforming relative to the field. This revert should add a bit of power back to those strategies.
Battlegrounds Updates
NEW ARMOR SYSTEM
Introducing the Battlegrounds Armor System! Starting in patch 21.8, Battlegrounds heroes will be awarded Armor at the start of each game to help balance and spice up the Tavern. All heroes will get a random amount of Armor from within a range, based on their power levels, with the strongest heroes getting 0 Armor and the weakest heroes being eligible for up to 10 Armor. At launch, these will be the Armor ranges and placements:
Our plan is to review these ranges and placements as part of our Battlegrounds balancing going forward, but we also want to hear your feedback on this new system after you play with it. The system may come in and out of the mode from patch to patch as we refine the system and introduce other new features or major changes.
NEW HERO
Tamsin Roame
- Fragrant Phylactery [Costs 0]
- Start of Combat: Destroy your lowest Health minion. Give its Health to all your others.
Players with Battlegrounds Perks will have early access to Tamsin Roame before the Hero is formally released on November 30.

So Drek’Thar let’s all your minion summon a copy of themself, not just itself. Then both of these are real powerful… if you draw them in time.
Nope, he draws two 3 cost minion or less from decks.
My bad, he *summons* two 3 cost minion or less from your deck
Oh, well then that is a lot less impressive xD
So you need only minions with three or less and not many battlecry minions since they will just break if he summons them. Still seems like the most useful one of the two. I’m going to pick the other one though, since I like playing with big minions.
My thoughts exactly. Plus he’s alliance so that’s the deal sealer. Yes horde is cool too but have to go alliance in wc games it’s a tradition.
Close enough. not Shattered but Fractured, even tho it’s almost the same thing. Nice prediction.
Back to the patch. I’m guessing we won’t know the total honor points for each faction until the January?
And I’m guessing we won’t get the other legendary until December 7th? Because I want to test both of them badly. Both in Control and Zoo.
Do they mention what kind of reward from L.Quest? (aside from said Legendary)
